Healing spells landing on me instead of my target

I am leveling astro atm (lvl 56) and after spamming Aery for a while I started noticing here and there some healing spells not landing on my targets. It's just a single spell, randomly between my casts I cannot recreate it, I haven't found any modifier key that would cast spells on me rather than targets. I am not using any macros. Just wanted to know if anyone else noticed this?

I've had this happen a couple times. I know what you mean by tough to re-create. It almost feels like you dropped off your target but when I check I'm still on the tank or whoever.

Yep exactly, sometimes I would run whole dungeon without this happening, next time it will happen twice in one run. A bit annoying since I tend to play "lets see how low the tank can go without dying" while I dps, and then bring them up with Essential Dignity.

I like to hold down my left mouse button majority of the time to control my camera and have noticed that occasionally depending on where my mouse cursor actually is, that can cause it to change my target or clear it completely. Happens fairly rarely, though if you are saying that your target is not actually changing... that sounds like a bug.

This happens regardless of the healer you play.

There's three reasons for it:
1) Lag. The most obvious but the easiest to anticipate. Just make sure that the party member is highlighted before pressing any key
2) Target moved out of range - Usually only a problem in dungeons and large arenas. This is generally why I use the mouse to change healing targets, if you can't click, you can't target.
3) Target moved out of line-of-sight - This is probably more like what you experience. The best example of being able to recreate this is with a Scholar. Tell the pet to stay and then walk behind objects and keep casting Psysick on it until one lands on you.

At any rate it's not a bug, it's usually a combination of lag and line-of sight. WP-hard's staircase areas are examples of where this would usually happen. Most other dungeons it rarely happens, and usually the Tank's are more aware of the line-of-sight requirement.

I noticed this a few times in the vault as WHM. I wrote it off as being tired. Will keep my eyes open for it more though.

I have this happen all the time on my SCH but I have yet to have it happen on my AST. I dunno what causes it but it seems like whenever I swapped targets really fast or used a global cooldown that affects me (like aetherflow or something) the next skill will be targetting me and not my target.

Never had it happen on macro-ed skills so I guess this for case of non-macro?

Just a guess, but you may have been a little too aggressive with target swapping and casting at the same time. You started your heal a split-second before the swap, when normally you do it a split-second after. From your point of view you did it 'the same as always' and it feels very jarring to see your cast 'miss', but in fact you mistimed things.

It's an easy mistake to make when you're used to swap-and-cast by muscle memory. I'll do it more often when I'm tired.

It's really not new, unfortunately. Usually it's from targeting the person and then hitting the button within an unnoticable second of each other, or at the same time. I'm prone to it when there's a lot going on and chaos on HP bars - one hand doesn't keep up with the other or both hands aren't keeping up with what my brain is telling them to do..... or lag is keeping it from doing any good.

I've noticed, since Heavensward, that some of my heals just go -no where- (rare, thankfully). The cure didn't even land on myself (as usually happens now and then) and no graphic or gained HP on the person I casted on. It just..... went nowhere. Cast bar, makes the casted animation and then.......... blank. Had this happen in Aery and T5 just before maint (5 and a half-manning, solo healing and solo tanking T5 and then again in a hurried, chain-pulling run in Aery *Twitch* Not good for heals to not go through).
It wasn't out of range or line of sight - the receiver and I were stationary - as well as able to receive a follow-up cure. Probably lag. My 'blank' cast incidents may also be a graphical glitch - I noticed that some NPCs 'disappear' when you take off but were there when you were on land. I also noticed some of my Holys not hitting, even though I'm practically on top of the mob I'm trying to stun. >_> No damage given, no animation reaction to being hit and no stun. I might as well have been 100 yalms away when I holy'd.

Am I the only one that heals light parties with F1-F4 to target players?

When that happened to me, I had tank selected as my target for a minute or more before 1 heal randomly landed on me, I was standing next to the tank and after this happening so many times I also tried moving out of range of tank and recreate it - if i go out of range and cast a heal it simply says Out of range and my char doesn't cast anything (i do not use any macros).

I also wanted to add, I am playing a healer since game was in beta, cleared all content on scholar and never encountered this problem. I did hear something about white mage heals not landing, but never experienced this, and after a while I thought it was fixed. I have however healed with mouseover macros on my other two healers. I just couldn't be bothered with macros on my astro yet (and I thought it will be more reliable if i get used to healing this way).
I suppose, since we can't recreate it, I cannot report it to bugs? Or would recording be enough?

While this is a great idea for 4 man parties, 8 man content seems impossible for me to go f1-f8.

Just curious, do you turn the camera with the left mouse button?

At the end of my previous mouse's lifespan I had little control over the left-click function. When I hold it down, sometimes it'll click multiple times (no sound, just metal contacts wearing out). So what happens is I have the tank selected, but when I turn the camera with the left mouse button it clicks. The tank gets un-selected and my untargeted heals heals me instead.

I thought that was the case, cause I do abuse right mouse button, but ever since it happened first time i was trying to pay attention who I have selected and I could swear my target never changed or disappeared. I will seriously try to get a recording of this happening, and review it more closely. It's kinda frustrating cause I can't recreate it no matter what.

If you go out of range before you cast, then yes it will say out of range. But what I was referring to was "going out of range", eg you start casting and the target goes out of range.

Anyhow, another suggestion in the thread is maybe the mouse wearing out. This is quite possible too, as "gaming" mice (eg ones with more than 2+wheel) when wearing out tend to generate extra clicks. I have noticed a similar issue with moving stuff around in inventory when right-clicking which wasn't present before V3.

But as mentioned earlier, this always to me seemed like the target was moving out of range for the heals to land on myself without the target actually being unselected (eg lag?) in the process.

Nah, I switch targets in 4 man like this too. Super fast heals since all of my heals, buffs and rez are set to my side buttons.

Sadly this is not a new issue, it is one I have and have also reported on the forum. I main WHM but it got so bad I considered a new job but before I threw the towel in I got my hubby to film my screen and my KB as I couldnt consistanly reproduce the glith I thought we will catch it on film and also my fingers to make sure it wasnt something I was doing!
As a result I was able to see that when my cures were hitting me and not my target it was because I had my back to them and the "auto face your target" function had failed to kick in! Thankfully that has resolved 99% of these failed cures as I can make sure I manualy turn towards my target before casting, and if I dont I can now catch the failed cure before wasting any mp! hope this helps everyone else having this issue too!!

UPDATE:
It seems its lag issue. I am leveling white mage now, and currently playing without wtfast and it happens quite often. If i change target quickly and keep spamming heals there seems to be little time window where nothing is selected and heal lands on me.

What you can try - as a workaround - is the following macro:

What this should do is prevent you from casting Cure without having selected a (friendly) target (that's what the <t> does). While this still doesn't solve the issue of hitting the wrong target because you switched the target too late (or because of lag), it does prevent auto-selfcast.

Beware that this also prevents you from casting healing abilities on yourself while having an enemy targeted. You will have to explicitly target yourself to heal yourself. This can be annoying, but I personally got used to it (I mostly just quickly hit F1 to target myself when needed).

Is what I use on for healing macros, just use whatever healing spell fits in place of cure. Only time I really have issues is if the target dies, runs out of range or cuts off line of sight.

Yeah macros work, but the idea of "normal" targeting healer is how nicely spells chain, so meh><

I know the OP doesn't use macros, but wonder if some of the other posters are. I used to include a line to heal <me> (after <mo> and <t>), but this turned out not to be a good idea, because if your target or MO target is out of range, you'll heal yourself.

I fixed this by removing the line for <me>. The only drawback is that to heal myself, I have to target myself. I do this by mousing over myself in the party frame, which I have set to be active even when I'm not in a party.
