Not long. People are realizing tanking is effort in this game and it's not a cakewalk.
The rotations are a bit complicated, not to mention mana management is necessary for you to function as a proper Dark Knight. Your Darkside buff allows you to use your defensives, get more stuns, and retaliation procs.
It's a Tank - that fact won't change. I guess most DRK were tanks beforehand (PLD or WAR). Others just were legitimately interested to look at the class but they don't like tanking and that's why they gonna go back to their classes sooner or later.
That's said, I think the DRK has somewhat stand-alone identify problems. He does not hit as hard as Warrior and cannot eat dmg as good as a PLD. However if you wanna contribute to that discussion go to the tank forum. There that discussion is currently ongoing.
Actually, I'll disagree with you on this.
We only have a 5% damage reduction if we're doing it right. I'm noticing a lot heavier hits than I do with warrior. I'm knocking out chunks that I never could have before. Our Scourge is better than Fracture.
Combine that with our abilities that let us regain mana from being hit - we don't have to necessarily drop aggro. Also, our 20% damage reduc's on a nice CD, which I combine with foresight with cross-class. I don't take too much damage when I don't want to. I use them interchanged.
Luckily I started white mage first so I've been shielded from dark knights so far, but
Dark Knight is coming....
Please, turn off the red glow effect in cities it's as annoying as RoT spam
I have WHM and I gotta tell you, the FF DK is pretty good in tanking, doing damage and not taking much damage. A breeze to heal and they keep excellent agro.
I'll disagree with Talec as well. Having only a 5% damage penalty with Darkside up is amazing. They also have a bunch of defensive cooldowns available so I never feel like there's a "spike phase" at any point of a boss fight.
Additionally, their magic damage mitigation is superb. Tanks often have trouble mitigating magical damage, but with a choice of Dark Mind, Shadowskin, and Shadow Wall, stacked with Delirium, DRKs are extremely versatile tanks.
Right now I'm going with a full Str build and rocking DPS accessories. Their agro management is so great that I don't need to use my enmity combo at all, which leads to constant 1-1.2k HP regeneration every time I use Dark Arts+Soul Eater at lv 52 with an ilv 120 weapon. 1k HP regeneration with every third combo skill and a safe supply of defensive cooldowns to cycle through sounds pretty OP to me, if anything.
Thanks for the info :)
I love drk I'm a 42 atm. I love the red glow and don't understand you people who don't like it. The drk's red glow makes it feel unique to me. Only thing at my level I'm having problems with is the fact that the avis's in stone vigil hit me hard. Am I doing something wrong since you guys say they shouldn't take much damage.
I agree with everything Walrus and Odett said. DRK doesn't have any tanking problems whatsoever. In fact, they're almost too good. Nearly impossible for me to lose aggro, we have the magic damage mitigation that PLD and WAR don't, and we only have a 5% damage loss in tank mode vs PLD and WAR's 15%. That's more than enough tradeoff for the shield of the PLD or pretty much anything the WAR has.
I wouldn't say it would die off yet before Heavensward launch.
We're still in early access and that means only the people who preorder would be able to play it. New players incoming this Tuesday are what decides if DRK will still be the fad.
On my side, I'm seeing some DRK here and there. Most of them have given up tanking after even brayflox and just fating in coerthas. I pity them once they get to expert level stuff...
doubt they will die off anytime soon lol they look badass.. id level 1 but my old game just killed the joys of playing tanks for me XD level 170 tank over 3 years drained me...tried dps loved it since :P
There are problems with Dark Knight despite the good tools that they have. But that's nitty gritty stuff. However, despite it's short comings on some aspects, I will prefer to be DRK over the other two much more.
I can't speak for tanks on how it plays cus I don't play it and I very rarely tank on my Warrior, but I am seeing a lot of DRKs with Paladin/Warrior at or below lv 15, so it makes me think a lot of DPS are jumping on it expecting it to be easy and it not working out for them, that is my idea anyway. So I don't expect there to be many perm change to Tanks being needed. As an AST, first day was horrible, now no issue wait wise.
I normally play DPS but I legitimately want to try tanking and get good at it. DRK just seemed fun so I figured 'two birds with one stone' kinda thing.
Soon as they realize that tanking is a painful burden of will and a tax on the fortitude of the soul.
The reason been a tank is to lead the charge and protect your friend without that in mind you will most likely start to lose Aggro like what most player are saying those bad dark knight lol
Btw I was surprise to see my duty finder dropped back to Tank needed in just 2 days on my server really thou tanking is not for everyone and I am really happy they give dark knight to the tank player given us some thing new and something to switch around with
It'll die off when the proper endgame content comes.
I made the switch from PLD to DRK and I hardly regret it. DRK is very busy versus PLD while tanking groups of mobs.
But people want to look like Cloud Strife, yo. Big swords, yo. PURE BADASSERY, YO. Then the real thing happens and the tears are real, when they realize how thankless our job truly is. Not to mention, as some people pointed out already, that DRK is quite a complex job.
Having experienced most of my dungeon runs in early access as a DRK, I'm curious of how the other DRKs are doing in dungeons. Someone in my FC was complaining about some DRKs being AOE shy, even just to hold 3 targets. What about you healers and dps going to dungeons? How are the DRKs doing on your end?
TBH I am kinda glad this happened. In ARR duties DPS classes are finally back in demand for once.
I started leveling DRK, however I switched to MCH after getting annoyed at the dungeon queue times.
At least in dungeons it was rare to see a DRK trying to play DPS. One Stone Vigil run the DRK wasn't using Grit, I noticed he was going to die and I mentioned it. His reply was he was a DPS tank. After he died a few times he did turned it on, he was wearing crafted STR jewelry not melded with VIT. Sad part is the healer was blaming herself.
