Eorzea's Next Top Model Cycle 4 - Round 5

SEMIFINAL TIME!

Last week in an extremely close round, we lost both Tinsley and Katarh. This week we're down to five models, with only three able to proceed on to the final round. And appropriately given that we're approaching the end, it's time to revist the area featured in so much of A Realm Reborn's ending storyline.

We're off to Mor Dhona! Revenant's Toll, specifically. The models were once more given free rein, but had to be in the encampment. Town? City? What do we even call it these days?

As always, please order the shots according to your preference. The round will close at 11:59pm on Tuesday as always.

1) Brun Hilda A lovely dynamic shot that really makes me feel like I'm in the middle of things. You look gorgeous and really stand out while looking like you belong in this scene! With the NPC and all the alchemy instruments in the foreground and the infirmary in the back... it's just really well balance and nothing feels empty. Everything in this shot ties it together.

2) Sunny Day It's a murky dark night shot where the area is foggy and murky and the background is hard to see except for these bright glowing crystals that seem to light you and your quiet confidence up! This picture is very subtle but also very bold! Also impressive that there's no one in the square... did you bribe everyone to leave for you or was it just really dead on your server just then? Regardless of how it happened I like the emptiness, it really makes it have a dark dead of the night feel.

3) Nozomi Kei I love this shot, the above angle of everything below, seeing all the bustle and activity, it makes me think Quasimodo XD Everything about this shot is gorgeous. Except for the lighting... here you are looking hooded and sneaky and the lighting is so bright!, if it were Twilight or Gloomy maybe it wouldn't seem so off but the golden glow just throws me off with your otherwise sneaky picture. Someone should be looking up and pointing at you "What's that guy doing up there?" It seems like you should be that obvious... Actually... if someone WAS doing that I might have snuck you up a level... That would have really sold everything for me.

4) Stephen Fairbrook I love this concept and the song effect really makes you shine, the audience actually seems nicely arranged to act as a border, but then there is this emptiness behind you... If you could have gotten an extra behind that counter clapping or looking pleased while at work I think that may have been the final touch to get the image to be balanced because you have a good foreground and midground, but your background suffers.

5) Hopelle Losstoam A really nice concept, but I just don't think it's well executed... the image just feels empty. Some extras walking away from the camera in civilian clothes or something would have made the left and right of your picture seem less empty with these towering walls. There's that bit of activity in the background but it's not enough to really make this picture shine... it just ends up very weak compared to the others but I could see it being so much better...

All of these shots are amazing, and I had a lot of trouble placing 2nd - 5th. :< I just want you guys to know I love all of your shots and you all deserve to go through in my mind but... Unfortunately that can't happen. ;__;

Nozomi Kei \\ I really love the overall composition of this shot. It doesn't feel very ninja-y, to me, but regardless it's my favourite shot of the bunch. I love the weather you've got (fog?), and how you've somehow managed to catch it at a point where it's active, but doesn't have people unrealistically stacked on top of eachother. It seems like a scene in an anime. Well done!
Stephen Fairbrook \\ Very nice! I like the feel you've got going here, and getting a group of people to come and sit and look like the audience definitely made the picture. I feel like you could be slightly more to the right, or the camera tilted slightly, because right now you feel a little cramped up against the minstrel, but that's my only complaint here!
Sunny Day \\ This was a really hard toss up between you and Brun but in the end I think your shot has more "umf" to it. You're more of a focal point, and the lighting does a lot to give you this sort of cocky, sinister feel that really resonates with your surroundings.
Brun Hilda \\ I really love the concept, and the composition, and I really really wish I could place you higher, because honestly there's nothing wrong with this shot other than my eyes not knowing where to go in the image. I wish, somehow, the attention was drawn better to you beyond the white coat. ;__; Because it really is a lovely shot.
Hopelle Losstoam \\ I adore the symmetry and off kilter look to the aetherite ring, but the weather + your outfit just completely blend you into your surroundings, and it kind of kills the shot for me. I'm so sorry, too, because it's a neat idea, but I think you would have been better off with something to maybe match the aetherite, like the ironworks set (blue glow) :<

We're in the semi-finals, so it goes without saying that all of you have done great work! I'm really sorry to see any of you go!

Stephen Fairbrook – Super adorable! I like the use of your extras as framing devices a lot in this one, though there is a bit of empty space on top of you and YoshiP’s alter ego. The woes of being a Lala. (How did Tyriont refer to them in Yt1? “Tiny and puntable”) Another thing I might nit-pick is that compared to for example Brun, who also has an indoor shot, your lighting is rather bright. It’s noticeable on in the shadows of others and your face is on the verge of being washed out. Maybe a touch too high on the gamma slider?

Brun Hilda – The purple of your costume fits perfectly with your hair~ But why are you blinking? T_T Otherwise this a beautifully compose shot. Though personally I might have rotated the angle a touch further left to get rid of that corner of the wardrobe behind you.

Nozomi Kei – Ninja…but you’re a Blackmage (or Summoner)! Though that costume IS kind of convincing I guess. Not sure about your choice of top though. :/ Otherwise it’s a beautiful scenic shot, the ropes are a nice framing device. Maybe take you out and it could be a scenic shot for advertising FF! Compared to my top 2 it’s just a bit too passive I guess? I like their interactivity with their surroundings more. :/ Addenndum: Looking at it again, I think you should be commended for not shying away from showing other players in your shot. RT is tricky in that depending on the server population it's packed, but if you're brave (and lucky that noone is holding a Fat Chocobo flashmob) it really works to make the town feel alive. Kudos for that!

I had trouble deciding between Kei and Sunny, both have nice shots at their core, but I found more to nitpick with Sunny's. So I'm sorry :(

Sunny Day – Another scenic one. Immediate nitpick is that there are a lot completely black spots in the picture which make for empty space. Especially right above you. It’s framed nicely, maybe turn the camera a bit left (what’s with me and left today), to get rid of the dark block on the right and get a bit more crystal on the left. The lighting on you is quite well done, but a bit odd since we cannot see the light source (sun minion is nicer imho if it supplements natural light, like lamps or torches, effects etc). Your facial expressions is a bit at odds with your blurb, because you look rather calm, almost serene. A /smirk might have worked better here.

Hopelle Losstoam – WHY ARE YOU CENTERED?! Jokes aside, I do get the choice, the symmetry is beautiful in this picture. I’m not quite convinced of the costume choice here, something more serene would have fit the scene more. (Perfect Balance… Monks, anyone?) And zoom. You’re not only quite zoomed out, but you also have a LOT of dead space with the walls on the side. Yes, diagonal lines create movement and lead the eye into the picture, the framing potential is great but when 2/3 of the picture are nothing but rock you might want to adjust. :( The concept has a lot going for it, but needs more work.
I understand you probably couldn’t work on it a lot because of the flooding, and it’s unfortunate, but honesty compels me to put you lower down.

2.Nozomi: I'd like this better if it was in the nighttime but I love this a lot. It reminds me of a vigilante or something.
3.Stephen: "Let me sing you the song of my people." I love this. Like a little concert. The only thing I'd wish you'd done was stand up-right when playing the song.
4.Brun: I dunno...I think it'd been better if your eyes were open and the person like shocked/surprised or something since he was getting lectured.
5.Hopelle: Neat idea but didn't execute that well, I am sorry to say...I think the outfit kinda tossed it all around. :/ Maybe something to match the Aertherlyte's colour?

So... we're down to the semi-finals! It's come to this, but here we are. I just want to Carbunclegulate everyone that made it this far into the semi-finales! You made it this far! And that is something to be happy and grateful about! Hells... I didn't even make it to the semi's in my cycle XD haha.... Any who, I voted my order based on several things, including technique, framing, execution, and etc. I wish all the models Good Luck and I'll see you Top 3 in the finales!!!

1. Sunny Day - Oh let the sun light come in.... let it come in again!!!!!! YES! This is what I've been wanting from you, this is what you're capable of!!! THIS is such a beautiful shot! It's literally tied with Stephen's last round shot as my top 2 favorites this cycle. I ADORE THIS SHOT SO MUCH! The lighting! The placement, the outfit, your posing, the expression, everything is just so beautifully done! I LOVE your dark atmosphere, I love darker type shots I feel they can stand out so well when done correctly. The way the crystals are pointing towards you to bring you as the focal point of the shot! The way the fog is creeping into the background and slowly swallowing up Revant's Toll... it's just beautiful! It's such a beautiful shot! I wasn't so sure what direction you were going in during the middle of the competition, but you really pulled that 180 on me here and I'm so happy and proud! I really rooted for you as one of the noobies I wanted to see go far this cycle and you did! I hope to see you in the final 3 Sunny, keep up the amazing screenshots!
2. Brun Hilda - You have done so well this cycle, I've loved everything you've put out! Literally I've not disliked anything as a whole when it came to your shots this cycle! I'm so pleased to see you come back from defeat in YT1 and power through and show them, they might have made the wrong choice cutting you out earlier than they did back then! Just bravo! /clap you've really done so well! What I love most about this shot is your lighting, you're well light, but not overly done. I love that you pop from the darker colors with your lighter colors on. And even though you have someone at the front of your shot, that NPC does not pull focus off you one bit! You remain the center focal point for me! And I love it! Thank you for taking me on such an amazing journey this cycle! And I very much hope to see you in the final 3 Brun <3 you go gurl! Fem-roes rule!
3. Stephen Fairbrook - I've loved the simplistic style of your shots from day 1! There is something so beautifully amazing about them, and yet they're so artistically done simplistically and I appreciate that! Simple or no, they've always been beautiful strong shots, this one is no different. My small thing I was worried about though with your shot, you're skin is so fair.. huh.. fair skin.. "Fairbrook"? I'm sure there is a joke or something there... but I'm not the joking type all the time lol. Your skin is so light that the light almost washes you out, but I love that your foreground has so many people and you even have a very well known and decorated NPC beside/behind you.. .yet you command the attention of the shot for me! I just love it! It fits with your concept, it fits the theme, and it fits my top 3 for this round! I really do hope to see you in the top 3 Stephen and good luck!
4. Nozomi Kei - First off... YaY you used them ropes! I LOVE THEM ROPES! I actually used them myself in cycle 3 for our "Helping Domans build Revant's Toll" shot.. /glares at Ty..... and you can really get some very interesting shots up there! I really like your pose and how you're looking down up on the town as a guardian of sorts. My problem though with this shot is yet again, your face is hidden! I want to see that gorgeous Elezen face! I felt it worked for you in your back shot, and it was ok/decent for your Garlean shot, but... idk 3rd time just isn't the charm for me personally. I want to see more expression out of you I guess, and I felt I got very little ; ; Other than that I liked your shot over all, the aetheryte threatens to steal focus some, but your purple helps make you pop just a smidge more. I'm very impressed though with your overall improvement through out this competition and proud to call you a fellow Cycle contestant! You've shown some beautiful things can be done even with limited glamors and jobs leveled! Sometimes it just takes some well thought out ideas and the drive to want to do great! I'm happy you came to ENTM and showed us your stuff Nozomi! Even if you aren't my top 3, who knows I might be seeing you in top 3! And if I do, you definitely earned it! Good luck Nozomi!!
5. Hopelle Losstaom - First I want to say I love that you played to my OCD... I love the symmetry thing going on here! I love it when pictures can line up and be all symmetrical and beautiful at the same time! I'm not too insane about your glamors, but I think it was a fair choice, sticking with WAR AF and Relic weapon, and alluding that "I'm a WAR" feel to it! The bad thing for me on this shot though, is you're zoomed out rather far. I guess you wanted to get the atheryte in there as much as possible, and I get that. You feel kind of squished in though in the hallway type area you're standing in. You're lighting is done rather well, and you definitely pop against the background for me! Overall it wasn't a bad shot, just lacked a few finer details for me at least. I've really enjoyed you being in this cycle a lot! I've had a blast with your shots, they've been both beautiful and fun! And again same to you, even if you didn't make my top 3, you never know... them judges! lol Good Luck in all your future endeavors and keep pumping out beautiful pieces of work no matter where you may go! <3

Terrific round! This--by FAR--was the toughest round to rank. There were so many things about each shot that I loved--lighting, poses, expressions, placing, use of space, etc. Well done. :)

There were no 'bad shots' this week--they were all incredibly strong. Judging by the diversity in people's rankings (a lot of differing opinions on who should be at the top, and who should be on the bottom), it shows--all of you had phenomenal shots this week, and you should be proud. :)

Brun: I like your outfit and also the angle is perfect. Good job.
Sunny: That soft screening light and the scattered crystals, very simple.
Nozomi: Nice angle, I just didn't like the outfit.
Stephen: I like how you were the center of attention yet that npc, the one behind you, didn't bother much, seems a little bit off.
Hopelle: Not the gear, not the location and not even the background tell me anything. random x random

1. Stephen (So adorable and captures the sense of movement really nicely. I love how you've used your friends to frame yourself perfectly!)

2. Brun (Interesting use of perspectives/camera angles yet again. It tells a story. I imagine you berating the chemist guy for not hurrying up with your order of meds for your dying patients, or something.)

3. Nozomi (Nice to see a birdseye view, it definitely made yours stand out. Looks like you are overlooking the city as a protector, either to scout out bad guys or just to generally 'people-watch', away from the masses.)

4. Sunny (I really like how your character is lit, it was tough choosing between you and Nozomi for third place but i just felt Nozomi's shot was a bit more dynamic than yours. It's literally like splitting hairs at this point, everyone is so close in terms of quality shots.)

5. Hopelle (I've always admired your risky shots and the amount of thought you put into your concepts. Unfortunately, this one didn't hit the mark for me compared to the other shots this round. I feel like you are a bit lost in the background, although i am loving the symmetry, that must have taken some doing/setting up/running around trying to find the perfect spot!

1. Brun Hilda: There's balance and a great deal of life in this shot. The NPC and table in the foreground, and the diagonal of the draperies in the background emphasize the depth and aid in making it an image that captures the eye. More than that, it's a picture that tells you a story at first glance - and I do so love a good story! Your outfit makes you pop, while still matching the scene you're acting out, and your body-language is hard to misinterpret. The only thing I can think of that might have taken this shot to an even higher level is possibly even more lighting.


2. Stephen Fairbrook: I like this, how you've managed to create the vista of a crowd come to listen to you play. You even seem to be outplaying the Wandering Minstrel! Like many of your other screenshots, there's a sense of peace and simplicity to this one. The foreground is great, but the upper third of the background feels a little too empty, and that's what makes this shot stumble a bit for me. Maybe if you'd had a tall friend or two stand behind the counter - dressed as staff mayhap? - it could have helped complete the image.


3. Sunny Day: This is good use of extreme lighting to create an ominous feeling, and I quite enjoy it. The night and the fog make Mor Dhona seem like such a desolate, forbidding place, then comes that super bright light outlining you, seemingly from nowhere - it's a strong concept. I know it's hard to do in such a busy place as Mor Dhona, but I really wish you could have gotten a bit of empty street in there, to more firmly bring home the disquieting mood. Maybe playing around with angles, you could have gotten more city and less empty sky.


4. Nozomi Kei: I like how you're occupying the lower corner in the shot, that the ropes create a foreground and the bustle in the plaza the backdrop. I would have preferred you and your surroundings to mesh together better, though. Your outfit is bright purple and crispy clear, while everything else is muted browns, yellows and greens. It's good to stand out, but you're just a little too different from your setting. Perhaps another time of day or weather would have been a better fit, or a change of gear. And again, I can barely get a hint of your face. Elezen, you're beautiful - flaunt your pride!


5. Hopelle Losstoam: Symmetry is nice, I'll give you that, but unfortunately there's no balance to pull everything together into a cohesive picture. You're small, only occupying the bottom half of the picture. The Aetheryte is there at the top, as if you're trying to wear it like a hat, only it's not quite working even as that. The colours of your outfit blend together with your surroundings, making you disappear. My eyes are more drawn to the stonework on the walls than you, and you're the model! I'm honestly not sure what could have been done to improve this picture - a different outfit definitely, better lighting to help you compete with the Aetheryte, another perspective perhaps, like looking slightly up towards you? Or... If you'd dressed to match the Aetheryte, making your body appear an extension of it (metallic blues?), with your face as the absolute center like now, it could have pulled the concept of symmetry together better. Still risky, but...

Sunny Day

I would never have seen this shot coming and I love it. The contrast is beautifully done, it's unique, striking and really stands out. Stellar job.

Stephen Fairbrook

While it's true that the framing needed some work (your audience reminds me of MST3K) the character here really shows through and your lighting is very well done.

Brun Hilda

A solid shot, well framed. My major issue is that your eyes are closed, which really takes away from the feel of the shot. It's a solid entrant, placed here because the two above stood out with their concepts a little more for me.

Nozomi Kei

I like the concept here, but it feels to me that it blurs the line between Eorzea's Next Top Model and Eorzea's Next Top Photographer. It's a stunningly gorgeous shot of Revenant's Toll, but that background feels more like the star of the shot than you do.

Hopelle Losstoam

While I understand the concept here, the shot feels very crowded, to the point that you're being drowned in everything around. I like what you were attempting but unfortunately the execution fell short. Perhaps if it were zoomed in, or you were closer to the camera so as to command more of the shot, it would have worked better.

Stephen – I went ahead and picked your shot for #1 this week, because I loved the effort you put into it, and I feel it really touches base on a lot of our feelings pertaining to the 2.5 questline. I really like the choreography of your extras, and your outfit as well. I think it might have been cooler if you had tried to match the Wandering Minstral in attire, but that’s me nitpicking.

Nozomi Kei – I really like your angling here, and how well you look like your sitting on the tightrope. I think this shot would have been better taken at night. I like your story here as well! I really like your outfit too, just maybe would of gone with a different top. This shot reminds me a lot of my own Assassin’s Creed Free Style shot xD!

Sunny Day – I really like your angling here, and how creepy the background looks. I think it fits your story very well. Your hair/outfit choice go well with it. Very different than what everyone else did. I guess the only thing that brought it down for me was that it looked a little ‘too’ dark, but other than that a very strong shot.

Brun Hilda – Ah it was so hard picking a line up this week. I think everyone did so well, you included! I really like the idea here, and how you incorporated an extra. I just will maybe you were a little bit closer, and I find the area a bit dull and boring. I feel like this could be any room in Eorzea and not specifically Mor Dhona I guess :S

Hopelle – Ahhh I feel so bad putting you last! You took such a risk with this shot, and I’ve always liked how you were different than everyone else. I just don’t think it was executed all too well this round. You’re very far zoomed out, and all the random people in the back really just throw me off. I think this shot being done at night, plus a bit zoomed in would of helped a lot.

Sunny - I was instantly drawn to this photo. It fits well with your theme and the theme of the round. The background is super stunning and gives off that dark grimy vibe. I feel like your a super hero or villain. Great use of the sun minion lighting up the edge of your face and body. I appreciate the subtle crystals around you to give the picture that extra somthing.

Stephen - Great use of space in this photo. I love the crowd in the forefront listening to your duet. Your bard outfit is cute and complements your bard extra. This is a very soothing and fun picture to look at. You captured the notes animation at the right time. Its flawless! :D Your face is just a little bright. and it would have been cool to see maybe a bartender in the background to help feel up the space in the back.

Nozomi - I enjoyed your concept a lot! You used another jobs armor, to create your own ninja. Looks awesome. Looking at the background, you get just how vast and big Mor Dhona can be. Even though we've seen the rope shot before, its still something different that stands on its own. I'm also a sucker for the foggy atmosphere.

Brun - Great concept and GREAT background, picking a spot that's filled up pretty nicely. I'm loving how your outfit and hair match and your scalding this poor man for selling a fake ether. I wish your eyes were open. It's hard to tell because of the glasses. This is a great shot with little to nothing wrong with it. It's just a bit on the safe side for me.

Hopelle - I actually get your concept and this it's great! I feel like the execution could have been slightly better. Because of the walls, the shot feels narrow and tight. Would have looked better if you were zoomed in, and lost the helmet. While there isn't much going on, I just feel underwhelmed and overwhelmed at the same time.

Sunny Day
This is a very nice image - while I feel you might be a little over lit on one side, it does give you that look of sinister. If the image has been a little more to the right and cut out the blue crystal on the left, I could almost believe it's the crystals lighting you - but it does give a strong feeling of an old film noir, which is great and the little smirk helps. I like that you went with a very subtle emotion with this - because it gives you that mysterious look that only helps the picture. The background goes with the feeling you're trying to give of this city that's pulled out into this more disturbing frame of mind - but at the same time the top of the image is very empty and I wish that the fading started a bit closer to the top to really give this closed in dark city feel of coming up around you as if it were overwhelming you. But over all you really did a good job with this.

Nozomi Kei
I like this image for a few reason, first off I'm drawn to you and the crystal... they are the two things that do stand out a lot. Once you start looking at the pocture you see the little details, everywhere you look the scene is changing throughout, but always interesting. While I would like to have seen your face, it does go with the whole ninja 'gotta be sneaky with my face hidden', but I'm not sure if the outfit overall says 'ninja' to me. Maybe if you'd gone with something all black, then had the hood died black or a dark purple, it might have looked more ninja - but that's a lot of skin for a NIN! Since the outfit doesn't really say ninja - it's hard for me to see you as one which leaves me wanting more! But the lighting is lovely and I love the angle that you took the shot from - but one thing that does really bother me, that floating foot... it's resting on nothing and that makes me chuckle a little. Other than that, good shot!

Brun Hilda
I like this picture, off the bat I could tell 'she's mad and he did something stupid', . But he really doesn't look like he cares - it's a very vacant looking stare. I know it's an NPC, but I think if he'd had more of an expression instead of a blank/bored stare it could have popped the picture a lot. Also I feel like the picture is a bit under lit, I do wish you popped a little more to bring attention to you. We got the guy, the items of the table, the light in the background the beds etc... and it a lot for the eye to take in. Outfit was a great choice, but I felt it just needed the little extra oomph - but the Alchemist outfit really fits the theme! It's not under or over lit - though I think it could have used a smidge more lighting to make you pop! I like that you're yelling at him about Ether, and kept the theme of that by wearing your Alchemist coat. Also - yes nip pick... but your eyes look closed. When I popped it full I could see they were open slightly but there ya go. >.< But it's a nice picture, Good job!

This is a cute picture and your audience looks as if you're enchanting them with lovely music... but I feel like this image is bottom heavy. There is a lot going on near the bottom but then it's empty near the top. Also I love the pose, and the theme is very clear to me so kudos on that. But I will say - to fit all thos people in (which woot for nice friends) really pushes you into the background and I do wish you were a bit more front and center in the image. Because you are so far back the lighting around you overwhelms your face, and almost completely washes you out. I had to pop the picture open and while it did give me more detail, it was still very washed out. Also, it does feel a bit over crowded/closed in to me as well... but nice job.

I feel this is a very good idea in theory, but the execution could have been better. I think this is a lovely idea, the balance and pretty much perfect balance is wonderful! But the choice of outfit makes you blend into the colors around (minus the red tones and light boots) I wish you'd focused on colors that would make you pop... perhaps if you'd gone with pale/ice blues to compliment your skin tone and brought yourself closer make it look as if you were becoming one with the aethryte, it could have been beautiful! I would love to see this image reworked with a better color scheme for your character and a bit more lighting to make your skin tone pop.
