Ummm about elemental resistance

Can someone please enlighten me the point of this whole elemental resistance system.

They seem even less relevant than low level potions. They are like the shape of the bread crumb on top of a turkey dinner.

You know what's even more funny, mom asking me what shape of bread crumb would i like to choose. Just like why they ask us what gods we want. And in the end I picked the packaging of breadcrumb that has orange color in it. Because i like orange color.

Just like how i picked my god.

There really isn't a point, unless you're min/maxing~ Kinda like our race stats too.

But I kinda like that. XD I can't imagine having to carry around a ton of elemental gear sets for certain fights... My inventory is already full! XD

I got the feeling it is a remnant from the 1.x system and during the course of 2.x development they decided, quite rightly, that the archaic idea of spell type resistance was a bad idea but left it in as it was too much hassle to remove it completely.

Well, they didn't forget about it completely, unfortunately. They still have a ton of gear that gets it (mostly Primal gear after 50), but without materia there's no way to stack it high enough to get any reasonable resistance (estimating from his conclusion means that 100 extra points of resistance is worth about 12% damage resist), and with materia and gear dedicated to resistances your other stats suffer.

If they made the resistance higher and/or gave an equal bonus to damage against enemies of that element, it might almost be worth it, but it's still a joke right now with no changes planned. I'd expect to see absolutely no Heavensward gear with any elemental resistances on it, however, since it really is a remnant of 1.0 that got cut because they didn't want to unbalance the classes/jobs (like making BLM required for Ifrit/Shiva to the exclusion of all other dps, or putting WHM on the frontlines for Titan/Garuda).

I find it would be cool to have potions or rare gear types that give straight up elemental resistance (at the cost of stats) for a good 12-36% dmg reduction against that element.
Would be a very situational use, but people would like it. I would. I still use Ward Potions in fights like Ramuh EX on first add pop lightning blowout super sale attack.

That... would actually be pretty sweet. Make it kinda like old-style morale versus mobs of a certain aspect.

Grandfathered in from 1.0 and ultimately useless. If they don't address it in 3.0, they probably never will.

It has it's use now.
In the Scylla fight, standing in the water puddles ups your fire resistance into the thousands, so you can take less damage from fire attacks.

I wouldn't mind seeing more mechanics like that. It'd be a lot more interesting in a fight with more than two or three elemental attacks thrown at you, so you'd have to see which element is right for you in the heat of the moment, and stuff like that.

So, is there a point to having a wand of tides vs wand of tremors vs wand of frost?

Once upon a time this game had an elemental wheel like lots of other Final Fantasies. When they developed ARR, it was decided that it was too hard for the playerbase to understand (or something like that, I don't remember the exact wording), plus it would give us horizontal gear progression rather than the vertical one we now have. As far as I know, the only reason why the stats still exists is because some of the gear from 1.0 had it, and then it doesn't really make a difference.
