I'm very much okay with buying a new version of FFXIV:AAR if it means I can get away from steam with this game. Could SE please make this an option some how. Tell me I'm not the only one.

I doubt you will since it's a deal with steam. Link your account with a ARR box and then upgrade that and just don't use steam.
Pretty sure I'm already SOL. My current version of ARR is a steam version. I'm torn between starting over with a new account completely separate from steam or just quitting entirely. I guess a better question would be if I add a new service account will I be able to play my current main character.
What do you dislike about steam?
can't you buy the normal PC version and register it to your account?
What say Mogstation what platforms are registered to your account? Have steam an own platform tag on Mogstation or use it the PC tag?
Nope, the steam version of ARR can only be upgraded with a steam version of Heavensward

As far as I know you can think of Steam as a "platform", like pc/ps3/ps4.
So, if there are players who can bounce between ps4 and pc with one account, you should be able to do the same with your current account.
Keep in mind that you will have to buy a new version of FFXIV:ARR and you want to make sure that this version matches up with your CE - so PC FFXIV:ARR + PC HW CE.
Either way, you should be able to use your existing account since your current account is tied to Mog Station and the SE Account system.
If I am wrong, I apologize.
with steam u cant do anything like that , if u have a FFXIV steam account u are SOL , no way to migrate char , no way to do anything other than buy heavenward on steam in order to play it , u cant even put outside codes , not even from SE store
whoaaa... does this mean that I cannot order any preorders from outside sources other than directly from steam?
Because my friend already did, is he out of luck?
I haven't ordered mine yet, but as far as I know, steam doesn't have pre-order/early access available yet, hope they get it out soon :(
You would need the basic game for the other platform. PC and steam don't count as the same platform, how I understand it.
There is never a way to migrate chars. You just put the registration key to your already existing SE account to the same service account as your FF account (don't create a new service account) and you can just login to your account with the new client.
Should be the same for Steam.
I'm an idiot who re-purchased the game just to use it on Steam and I regret.
why it's so hard to buy expansion packs? if it continues like this I'll ask for a way to get away from Steam too.
To get your account off Steam you just need to get a copy of the game for a different medium, register it to your account and never use Steam again. You don't have to start over at all, your character is tied to the account, not the particular install you're using. Yes, it sucks that you will have to probably buy the game again, but it's not the end of the world.
For those who don't use steam it would help to know what platform tag Steam users have
This are the platform tags on my account:

Win for nomal PC version and PS4
Do steam users have the Win tag, even if they haven't registered the normal PC version in the past, or have they another tag?
If another tag, then it should be really no problem to register the normal PC version to the account.
Have you tried downloading the Trial Version and logging into it with your account?
One thought would be to contact S-E support, explain that you bought the physical CE, and ask if they could swap the physical CE key for a Steam digital CE key. All they'd have to do is void the key from your physical CE if they're worried about you gaining two keys.
No guarantee they will, but considering they should have thought of this situation beforehand, I'd think they'd want to remedy their little oopsie.
