It is said that they are both 16 so they should be taller, are they just outside of the norm? :)
Childhood can last longer for Elezen (because Elezen can potentially live longer than the other races), so even though they have sixteen years on them, they might be more youthful than the average sixteen year old. If there's a discrepancy, that'd be my guess as to why.
Well, that and teenagers tend to be somewhat shorter than adults in fiction so people know they're teenagers.
Plus, while highly unlikely they might just be kind of short. Perhaps their mother was a hyur?
I think it's an age thing and also a want to keep them still identical looking. If they aged them up (And please SE never do this) then they'd look a whole lot less like identical twins.
Realistically as the game continues I would think it likely we will see some aging from them or it will be weird. I mean if we were going into 5.0 and 3 years had past, I'd kind of expect them to be alittle older. Even if they age slower they are at an age where they are growing.
It would be interesting to see if they at any point chose to change the looks of major NPCs. Cid is now sporting a beard he didn't have in 1.0 and I could easily see others changing their looks as time goes by.
I wish would could make "young" characters. The most I could do with any non-Lala is a really petite individual that still appears older than usual.
Elezens must have terrible growing pains.
Considering that from the time between 2.0 and I think either 2.1 or 2.2 It had been 8 years since the calamity (Minfillia I believe says this in the start of the patch Cutscenes). I think time moves a bit faster. By 5.0 I'd think it'd be at least 15-20 years or more since the calamity happened.
No, we aren't 8 years past the Calamity. At most we are 6 years past it (5 years for sure by the start of 2.0, and maybe 1 more year added to that by 2.1-2.55)
I'm pretty sure Minfillia stated at least 7 years. But I could be wrong. Need to go back and re-watch the Cutscene in the inn room when I can.
I'm not saying it's been 2 years since the end of 2.0 stuff. I'm saying that whole ordeal took a year or so to progress.
It was 5 years since the end of the 1.0 saga to the beginning of the 2.0 Saga. Then give a year or a little more as we progress from the beginning of 2.0 to the end of 2.0. Then possibly a few months to half a year to 2.1.
I wouldn't mind if they aged them as time goes by. It already seems odd to me that someone as young as Alphinaud is taken so seriously in the story (leading a company, negotiating with world leaders) if he got an older appearance I think it would make it more believable for me.
plus Alphinaud is a little shit, his arrogance is quite bothersome to me. So some age/height added to him would make me feel better when he says something like "of course you'll help", that way ill feel alittle less inclined to step on him
It's perfectly possible for fully grown adult men and women to still come across as androgynous. SE is perfectly free to keep Aph and Ali looking identical as they age. Aging GRADUALLY, though, is difficult; it's tough to create new character models that are ever so slightly older, again and again. I wouldn't expect to see the two of them as adults unless we go through another time-skip (or some weird timey-wimey crap like what happened with Rydia in FFIV) so they can skip straight to the adult models without having to deal with the phases between.
As for Aphinaud being too big for his britches, yeah, he's deliberately portrayed as being precocious - and he gets bitten HARD for it. By the end of the main scenario, he's been significantly humbled. How well he'll have learned from his humbling remains to be seen...
If you think of societies in the setting we are talking about and the fact that Alphinaud is basically part of an influential and rich Shalayan family, is social status makes up for his age. Alphinaud's family supplies a good portion of the Scion's finances. His words hold clout because his family holds clout.
He is a young noble basically and acts much like a young noble would. He assumes power and authority because it was the world he was raised into. Arrogent yes, but his heart is in the right place. Remember he did help that young refugee girl find her parents back in 2.3 and he is usually pretty respectful of people.
I mean, do people really want a humble Alphinaud? The would seem pretty weird to me.
I actually like his character, he's a quick wit, privy to statecraft and quite knowledgeable of history, including that of foreign nations. Plus his voice reminds me of a ton of animes video game roles that Sam Riegel has played.
I don't want his personality to change (well, kind of! But you know, in character progression kind of way :P) but I wouldn't mind if he was older or if the story drew attention to his age somehow. As it is, he talks down to world leaders and no one bats an eye. Imagine if a 16 year old walked around the White House arguing with the President about foreign policy. No matter how right the 16 year old might be, someone would eventually tell him it was time to find his parents.
It really depends on their intelligence, and as smug as Aplhinaud is, he does know politics to some degree fairly well. Plus talking about age/appearance being associated to credibility in concerns to this FFXIV's universe seems a little difficult when Lalafell are a thing.
There is two factors to consider here. Firstly, this is a very different setting to modern day. We are in a suedo medieval setting with noble houses and monarchies. In such a setting young members of the ruling families of such houses would be expected to represent their family. Further, remember several Gridania's leaders are often physically younger than Aplhinaud. Kan-E-Senna is physically somewhere between 14 and 16 years old.
The second to consider is if a 16 year old of enough influence went to talk to the President of America and argue about Foreign policy, he would likely talk to the kid because influence and connections trump age. Anyone who was stupid enough to risk offending a high ranking visitor by telling them it was time to find his parents and likely offend a foreign dignitary would be kicked out of the diplomatic corp.
Hmm, I don't know if Hydaelyn pseudo medieval though, more so on the verge of an industrial revolution considering the sort of tech Ishgard and Garlemald have and that Cid and some parts of Ul'dah are introducing, Eorzea is just lagging behind due to the power of magic and a resistance to new ways of life. Either way though, Alphinaud and Alisaie are nobles and probably have been groomed from birth in the fields of politics, though Alisaie isn't as much of a fan as Alphinaud is, so it's not very surprising that people do listen to him when he speaks considering his upbringing.
Im, already working on getting the exact quote from minfilia. It is not in any of the cut scenes I've already checked and so far it is looking like it was said just after she gets to revenants toll. I just need to get my character past the whole follow white clad douche bag. Lol just need a bit better gear and I should be golden.
I'll be damned if I can find a quote, but way back in the day I believe Tanaka mentioned that FFXIV's tech level was envisioned as being around 400 years after the 13th-century setting of FFXI. As of 2.0, though, Ul'dah and Limsa are easily 18th-century pre-industrial, and Gridania and Ishgard are visually rustic but actually quite modern in their engineering. Garlemald is straight-up 20th century now, since they already have aramid fibers and functional computers. And who the hell knows what Sharlayan is up to?
Schizo tech is fun! Aside from Archers and Pugilists, the rest of the war implements on display were used, sparingly, up through the First World War, but the fact that guns have somehow avoided replacing bows entirely, especially in Ul'dah, is one really big reason people confuse FFXIV for medieval fantasy. That and ye olde butcherde Englishe script.
i know that there are issues with child like characters but giving us the option to make our character even shorter should be fine in ff14 there are 3 instances where a character is a teen u have the elezen twins and from where i am in the game you have seen another teen like character and that is e-sumi-yan the master of conjurer's guild so making our character that size should not pose any weirdness i'm mean look at most of the ff games they are mostly teens ranging from 16(zidane tribal) to 18(squall leonheart) and lets not forget vivi who is 9 years old and eiko 6 years old the youngest character who fights in a ff game. also when you create a human in ff14 there is a face like a a young/teen boy but it does not work well with the height options you get.
OK so since I didn't see anyone mentioning it.
According to the Eorzea Encyclopedia, Elezens stay shorter until approx 20 y/o. It is because they live longer than most races. It's even mentioned that they are mocked by hyurs and others because of that since they really are small (ref. Alphinaud and Alisaie who are, yeah, quite small) but when they reach about 20 years old, they do start to grow to the Elezens we come across (and can play).
That's about it :)
Was it just me or did the twins' (especially Alisae) voices sound more mature as of 5.0? Like in a "we're doing this deliberately cus its been a year for them and we're showing change" kind of way.
