Quality of Events > Quantity of Events

Greetings!

After the latest regurgitation of what could be classified as the "monthly content" Yoshida talked about rolling out... It is with a humble & contrite heart after doing these "events" that I have to say that QUALITY > QUANTITY.

I know these events are mere filler until a patch comes out, but with the items obtained from events having no use other than clogging inventory space after their aesthetic appeal has faded... at least make the events released worth doing.

Events in Final Fantasy 11 (depending on the event) were a lot more in-depth than the ones in FF14. The items obtained (such as the Treat Staff) had a use other than clogging inventory space.

Having said this.. Please take the time to release quality events that people want to actually do. Gamers would rather participate in a quality event that gets released every 2-3 months but has depth & meat to it rather than one that gets released monthly and feels so shoddy and out of place.

the fact that over the course of its 9+ years of life FFXI managed to produce a small amount of useful items is hardly grounds for saying that FFXIV needs to have them every event.

The yukatas, the wooden katanaas, the pitchforks, the pumpkin heads, the costumes, the litte kid costumes, the santa gear, the unique fireworks, the bathing suits.... most of it was aesthetic appeal. A few useful things came out in the end. XI had to produce a storage NPC for all the clutter event items we were getting were we exchanged tickets.

Am I the only one who remembers this stuff?

I think the events are just fine ^^ and the events are ment to tie in with the lore of the game Not more so of what you get out of it, they are fixing the game and therefor e have to work around the game " with map redesigns and stuff" to make it seem like it makes senses

I feel events here are more fun because you need to work with other people, or at least it was intended with players working together in mind, and the lore are definitely much better because they are tied with what's happening in Eorzea.. Events in XI was kinda out of the place, never cared what the events really means, i was there just to get the stuff not to celebrate.

I like the direction of seasonal events in XI and XIV. I feel they are basically meant to break from the daily tasks we performed during the event heavy schedules that were present in XI, FFXIV is not there quite yet though, but a lighthearted event with good Lore is never bad and I appreciate a lot to tie in happenings in the event with previous quests offered by some random NPC where you go "Oh! I remember reading about this!".

All in all, I wouldnt like events to be something "I have to do" because otherwise I would be missing on epic gear like regular raids, but something fun and lighthearted with the extra cosmetic rewards.

Edit: I will venture to say the Easter event and the Summer event were very high quality events that provided fun, party based content and quite a bit of Lore on whats happening. I think some are focusing too much on the rewards of the event and not the actual happening of it and what you do in it too.

I think what we're really trying to say here is, "Muteppo or GTFO."

That said, I rather like that XIV's events evolve and unfold with time. It adds to that immersion thing everyone seems to have their panties in a bunch about these days.

I agree with OP.... this games events have been really meh ;x.

The events in FFXIV are fine imo when you take all the work they are doing into account. Yes they might be sub par right now, but SE has alot of work to do, the gear designers have to make gear rewards from new content released every 1-2 months, so seasonal gear will be a lower priority, when they have fixed the game the gear from events will probably be alot better and useful.

Also the only event gear I used from ffxi was my treat staff 2 everything else I got was pretty much useless.

The Bombard event was good. I thought.

Haevenstrum had nice music. Althought it got repetetive as did the christmas and summer event music.

ffxi you got stuff that warps you
eggs to write things in your bazaar
belts that turn you into cute things
candy that turns you into kids
the best gear for clamming
gear that lets you up the EXP you gain for an hour
throwing eggs that were the best ranged stat item for 20+ levels
etc.
and you could store it all with an npc

The quality of the events has risen drastically since Yoshida took charge. Need I remind people of the bell-ringing events we had with Tanaka? Every event, just ring a bell. Even the current phase of the Curse of Dalamud event is better than that crap.

Is that actually a good thing though?

If I'm perfectly honest, I would rather they spent less time on events anyway (maybe limit to three per year) and use the programmers on something with more lasting value. (Which I shouldn't have to say! But you know how it is, SE act like they have a scarcity of resources so it seems odd they still have time/money to organise and implement these events).

Are you saying that bell-ringing events are better than what we have now? This thread isn't about your resources bullshit you like to carry on about.

This thread is asking for higher quality events and rewards, which in my opinion is what we've been getting albeit slowly. They have been getting better as the game goes on. X-mas event? Boring as hell. New years event? Boring as hell. Easter event? More involved and interesting, multiple parts. Summer event? Dare I say it was fun as long as you had people to do it with. Curse of Dalamud? So far kind of meh but I'm thinking there's more to it they haven't released yet (like the Easter event).

I think you mean to say, for a game like FFXI that already has a lot of content, quality > quantity. For a game like FFXIV which is essentially barren of content, we need quantity. Lots of it. Implement every freaking idea hastily drawn on the back of a napkin and see what sticks. Once we have a quantity we can start weeding out content that doesn't meet the quality standards. I wish SE would just introduce "temporary content" and let the polls choose which content will remain and which will go the way of the Dodo.

I can agree in some part to the OP's post but also realize SE has much bigger resolutions that need implimenting first. So in saying that, the Fire Faire event was a blast! The new Dalamud event is easy as hell so it's great for newer players just getting into the game as it gives them a quick easy sense of accomplishment. For those of us who have been around since release we may go "meh" but you can look at it from another POV as well.

While the first events lacked in lore and creativity over all "ringing bells" it did provide I thought nice gear to an extent. As time progresses like with any MMO XI included, the events will get better as will the rewards but in the mean time, it does give you a nice break from the regular grind/craft grind/leves we all seem to complain about doing daily anyway. :)

Anyways I'm sure once they've finished adding the content that makes the game enjoyable overall they'll start adding better content that makes the game more enjoyable for a week or two (b'.')b

Plus it beats running around at halloween constantly hearing "The sky is dark, the fire burns, you strive in vain as fates wheel turns!"

Besides, I'm sure this Curse Of Dalamund has more to it than glowing rats that drop earrings, 'cos y'know, I'm sure a red moon would have bigger effects than jewelry dropping rodents. We can but wait and see.

Well the event is kind of intertwined with where the main story is going, however most people don't read quest text and all so they wouldn't know that.

Spoilers:

In one of the early side-quests in Wineport I believe, an NPC mentions that they've noticed the smaller moon appears to be growing larger (getting closer).

In each city when you finish up a certain Grand Company quest you'll see Cid and he mentions Meteor.

Also take into account that the Bombards originated from small meteors that landed here.

And now with the Curse of Dalamud, Moon mice are being controlled by the Lord of Rats and are stealing earrings made with pieces of the Bombards and resemble the twin moons.

So as you can see if you read the above section, there's actually a lot more to it than most people notice.

That's.... actually a pretty scary premice O.O'

It's a fairly slow build-up but the finale sounds like it's gonna be pretty epic :3

Next up, over-use of the Star Wars quote: "That's no moon!"

EXACTLY! So totally agree with that! I did that (not reading the WoT) after launch because personally I thought the story lacked big time in real plot. It was boring as HELL! >< Now when I came back, I restarted ALL my characters and choose LL and Ul'Dah as their home Nations and now, it's actually more exciting and I feel SE has finally gotten back to their epic story telling. So while Arcell makes the perfect point and while the Dalamud event is a bit "meh", it's only a portion of what is to come.

Woah, lighten up, I was just saying I would rather have a few high quality events (like the Bombard one) instead of several. For example, currently we get like a million events per year, but perhaps they should shift their focus to more pressing matters.

The more detailed an event is, the more time-consuming it is to manufacture. So I fear that since we are getting more elaborate events, and no less frequently, we are getting less of something else we might otherwise have had.

Resources aren't infinite.

That is an undeniable fact.

However, I doubt they are spending their resources "as they go" but rather: A careful plan was devised at the start of the year on how they would develop every part of the game until they are ready to start charging and even beyond. So after careful examination they determined very early on they could use development time on X amount of events without hindering the main development process of overhauling everything and so on for everything else they are planning to implement.

i enjoyed some of the events in ffxi, at the least for the first time then i didn't do them again. shame they can't change every year to boot. but they should make them better, i get the issues with game so, hopefully next years events are different.

truthfully no event or side games like choco races, or the collesium, or the pvp in ffxi was ever anything truely enjoyable. or done so bad it wasn't worth doing. tons of players doing the pre requisites for these things, then in a month they are dead and empty. mmo's need to find a new way of doing them ..they are a waist of resources in my opinion. theres gotta be a better way, i would rather go play a offline game then do any of it.

pvp games kinda get away with it, theres aren't that fun either, but.... u get to kill people trying to do it all day. theres 24hr battles around the events happening and like warhammer they add new battlegrounds in some of theres. that was entertaining for awhile.

i'd say we need a little more in pve events, not something just tossed together. maybe start allowing other people make them, or use them for others to commercial there own mini games that are offline and add them in mmo's with ffxiv twist. i dunno, but either way also rewards worth getting too. Chocobo stables scarfs were great for first 2years in ffxi, port u right to choco stables from anywhere, and that was b4 any easy porting was in game. stuff like this.

maybe add zones only open during events, where new mobs are there and bonus sp given there ...so everyone is there grinding for the weeks end. killing things in that zone can give u rewards, kill 1k of each type of mobs and get 1 reward and so forth. then event ends and that zone is closed for good. eventually they can open it again for event again, have many of these an switch em up a bit and this can be entertaining events. add snow mobs to the winter one and so forth. snowmen an tree's are in the zone and what have u. even instanced version of this ...if seems to much work like i'm thinking now lol. heck even the bonus's in the reg world. anything sound more entertaining then emoting a fire bomb witch i did for 5 seconds and quit.

I rather have a fashion item than item that actually have any stat or special effect. Afaik event in mmorpg usually are have fun and celebrate, example x-mas , new year and recently we celebrate Hunter's moon. I rather have event like this than have a event that give you a piece of armor r50 what epic stats you can use to pve. I do agree that Hunter's moon event is to short (or it have 2nd phrase I dont know) but I enjoy it though, the earring is beauty and for me I am happy and so far I enjoy all the event FFXIV have and to point out the fact that this game have more event than other mmorpg I had played, I can take a exampler as Aion (I play at Eu) which I played for 9 months, there are barely any event there and when the event are there guess what we got ? FIREWORK !!!!!! happy ? no....

I have to say the event themselves, in XIV, are fine. The rewards need some more novelty to them. The information about when, where, how, and what definitely needs to see a little more in game explanation.
