Personally, I wanted to name my character Rooster San, but my brother (having never played an MMO before), wanted to name it Spunky McFuntcuck. So I decided I'd take his dare and named my beta character as such. It's not the name of my actual character, but it's still funny.
my beta character called Robin Shirley, because i am a huge Anne Shirley fan but hate to just copypaste a famous name xD and i like the name Robin, sounds so tomboyish ^^
after the beta i learned about the naming rules for each race, so i created a new name.
For beta 3, I had a mi qote named "Marche Kolad" (dont ask me why- not even I know what was going through my head then...)
For beta 4, I had a lala name Iitori Sisitori, which was alot better, and I still use the name for my two retainers (twin lalas :D )
I'm going to take the topic literally and go so far back in 2010's open beta, I was Tsumugi Kotobuki all the way up to ARR's release.
In FFXIV 1.0's beta, I was Emelyn Silvanesti.
- Emelyn to keep my love for FFXI alive~ For those who don't know, Emelyn was the name of Aldo's older sister that was attacked by Orc's in the opening cutscene of FFXI. What's funny is my cat's name is Aldo right now :p.
- And Silvanesti to show my love for Dragonlance. As Siivanesti was the name of a clan of elves known to follow the Speakers of the Stars, where the miqo'te I had made was a Keeper of the Moon. I honestly wish I had stayed such, but....circumstances...

I was not in 1.0 beta, but for 2.0 alpha I was Catara Mest. I decided I liked the name but brought it into lore alignment with Katarh, even though it's more or less pronounced the same. Mest is not one of the name generator Moonkeeper clan names, but there are still a handful of us out there, so my backstory was built around the idea of a shrinking clan on the brink of extinction that was merging with another clan and losing its name (which means everything to Moonkeepers.)

Altrage Delaroux (means 'of the red' still have the character from 1.0 beta)
Created a new character because some friends picked up the game during 2.0 launch and were on a different server so I re-rolled on that server (leviathan), I was a Mi'qote
Altrage Clanclan (yes, a nod to Outlaw Star's Aisha Clanclan of the Kitaro Kitaro Empire)
now: Altrage A'uli (means 'of the blue/sea' used one of the many fantasia's they gave legacy players to change into a Highlander (got tired of the always stressed out looking rest positions of Male Mi'qote) and will change into Au Ra when they are launched!)
During the 2.0 beta I was Lucille Wallace, but the punny midlander version. I disliked the "princess-like" run and switched to highlander.
Chihaya Kisakinomiya (dat trap!) and hence my forum name.
But feel silly taking anime/game character name and used my FFXI name when ARR came out with a fresh new character.
From the first beta to now. Amaterasu Aleria~ (Though I had to remake Amaterasu after 1.0 started. Oo)
It was a male Miqo'te named Seven Sigil.
Alpha I went with Enkidoh Ninghol, but all my Beta characters I stuck with my 1.0 character's name, Enkidoh Roux.
Mine was Sonyeo Kestrel, same as my name in 1.0. ^^
From 1.0 Alpha phase till now I have always been and always will be Nadien Kirisame... We had cheesecake back then and it was good...

My character name in Beta was Felidae Obligata/Oblicata. (Can't remember which spelling I used to truly commit to the pun)
1.0 Beta through today, I've been Seigyoku Cypher. I'm going through a Hyur phase atm, but I bought 2 fantasias at once for the inevitable moment when I wish to return to my original Lalafell self. X)
I have had the names for both my characters since they were first created. No changing those. ^^
My original name from 1.0 Beta up to ARR was Spikun Asura. However, a lot of players would pronounce it incorrectly and some would derive racial slurs from it. To avoid any confusion and potential banning, I figured going into 2.0 I would change it.
Thus, in 2.0 Beta, I changed my name to Spykun Asura. Been happy with it since. ^_^V
In the 1.0 Beta I was Khaela Alteri. Almost played 1.0 too but I didn't like the extra $5/mo per extra character slot (even on ARR I've got a couple alts I haven't really played--it's a thing I do on every MMO, and in 1.0 having at least one for different stat builds, etc. seemed a good idea). When I finally decided to try ARR I not only kept the name but designed the character to be, visually, as close as possible.

And I kept getting /tells in French.
And I always felt bad because I don't know French... ._.
ARR's legacy transfer was a good opportunity for me.
For 2.0 beta I was the samen as I am now... I'm not very creative.
2.0 Beta Phase 3/Phase 4 : Zack Hyrule - and I still have him as my alt THM character just havent used him in ages
Been stuck for names I decided to go half FFVII (Zack) and half Zelda (Hyrule) since it seemed cool at the time :p
In 2.0 beta, I was Sayaku Korei... miqo'te, still, but black haired and different hair style. ANd Gladiator. With no idea how to tank. loool "Is my Flash skill doing damage??" *Shamed palmface*

My 1.0alpha through 2.0launch name was Leyna Crosse. It has never changed. I did have another character during 2.0 beta named Nayri Fae for a while though.
