Why I think now is the best time to gear your gathering classes.

So. My name is Morzy. I've been gathering since about 2.3, not very long. One thing I've always tried to do is anticipate updates, more specifically, the expansion. As a gatherer, the best way to get prepared is to BE prepared with the best gear and tools.

So while I see some say it's not worth gearing up their gathering classes because you won't make the gil back before expansion... Sure that may be true, but I think the chances of that gear giving you a head start in the expansion as a gatherer is pretty high.

Also tbh in the expansion, either the gear you are hesitating to buy NOW will be either..
A: In demand because of the flood of players, overpriced.
B: Utterly useless and replaced
C: Extremely useful, overpriced.


And it's always been this way, since we got Supra and 3 star nodes.
If you wanted 3 star, you needed a Supra or the new gear to get you there.
If you wanted 450/450 nodes, you needed the melded offhands.
If I want to be ready for 3.0, I'll be ready.

1 star: 370 gathering/332 perception
2 star: 408 gathering/389 perception
3 star: 420 gathering/420 perception
3 star: 450 gathering/450 perception
expansion:?????????????????????????


I have 492 gathering and 468 perception. With a little luck and a lot of work, I'm ready.

I agree, basically by gearing up right now, you're getting the cheapest prices on forager's gear and the offhands AND you'll be able to skip on the exorbitant overpriced beginning 3.0 gear which will cost a lot more than they're worth at least for the first few weeks.

Even though it's likely worth it just so you can avoid inflated prices of new gear and also to get higher success rate on nodes, I don't think the new nodes will require anything higher than current 2 star requirements. Infact, I would imagine it to be between 1 and 2 star. Think about it, for every expansion that gets released, if you had to get to 3 star gathering just to access Heavensward nodes it would be put off so many new players and gathering would be less popular. That being said, getting a Foragers set is still worth it I'd say.

Since we're on the topic of Heavensward, what do you guys think is going to happen with the new nodes in terms of accessing them? Do you think it will be possible to reach nodes without flying? (I'd really like to start gathering as soon as I log in). My take on it is that unfortunately you'll probably need a 60 battle class to have any hope of reaching 60 miner or botanist unless you wanted to grind out much lower level nodes for a long time.

Heheh i rather level crafters than gatherers cuz the undercutting for gatherers have the possibility of being plummeted again by bots. Where as crafting relies on gear/skill and some luck which bots cannot replicate.
Also ppl r lazy to craft half the time and have a butt load of gil so ofc they will buy our over priced gear on week 1.
Even if we buy ur over priced materials, it won't even come close to how much we'll sell our stuff for lol

Except if you want to powerlevel crafting in the first few days you absolutely must gather because it will take some time for resources to be put up on the market place.

Well, if there's one good thing about locking everything in Heavensward behind storyline progression, it's that it should cut down significantly on the number of bots gathering in the new areas. While I'm sure that RMT will soon have storyline progression down to assembly line efficiency, it will still likely take several days to get a bot to level 50 BTN, FSH, or MIN and get them through the Main Scenario so they can get to work flooding the AH with new gathered goods - and every time SE manages to ban one, they'll have to do it all over again.

Legit gatherers should have a grace period of a week or so where they're competing only against other legit gatherers. Which, I suppose, is another reason to make sure you're geared up and ready to go when the expansion hits!

Im pretty sure they will be using exsisting materials to craft the new starter gear and the new materials to craft the high low- high end gear.
Cuz it'll be SEs way to cheese gear catch up lol
But im also sure a lot of gatherers will undercut each other like mad once they know where to get stuff. Cuz there will always be ppl that want gil NOW and will do all in their power to sell their stuff over urs.
Thats what will make gearing up gatherers not tht effective.
But imo Gearing up gatherer now is only effective as OP claims it to be if ur on a small server that has a handful of high end gatherers. If ur on large ones chances r prices will plummet before the end of early access.
I.e 3000 gil for 1 item -> 800 gil for 1 item

Also have u considered how long it'll take to level ur gathering classes from 50-60?
If ur gonna be using tht headstart effectively ur gonna have to bum rush ur gatherers to 60 while selling off the stuff u've obtain. Cuz the player who gets to 60 1st will have access to the new "unspoiled" nodes thus making more gil than the player who slowly levels by just gathering the same few stuff.
Having 4 star stats probs won't do much cuz reaching the reqs for a level 51 gathering spot will probably be = to a 1 or 2 star node.
Having higher stats won't boost ur exp ( unless hq i think ) gain and will be redundant by the time u hit 60.

You know it's funny people saying it pay off to get it now.

BUT do you even have any guaranty that the high stats you have now for gathering will even need to be that high it could just as easily be much lower than what it takes for 3 star nodes.

I have no idea tbh. While the areas to get the new nodes will be higher level, I hope I won't need a level 50 combat class. I don't know what the difficulty of the new nodes will be, but Ido believe that the gear I have now will help me between level 50-60 because it could mean I don't have to upgrade my gear, at least until lvl 60 BiS.

If the stats don't need to be that high for level 50-60 then that's even better because my gear may last longer than I anticipate. The gear we have now could be better than level 60 AF3 gear for all we know.

I'm well aware. When 2.4 hit I made over 7m from selling HQ platinum ore because for the first few weeks I was the only one selling them.

I don't know if the gear will be redundant or not, but I'm not having hope or am really worried about it. I expect it to get replaced with newly melded gear.

Nope! No one here knows one way or another. It's pretty much a total mystery. It could also be the case that even top-notch gear will NOT BE ENOUGH. You could invest all this money and time into gearing up, only to have to throw it all away because you need new expansion gear to get anything done at all!

That said, it comes down to speculating and taking chances. Bear in mind, though, that if you gear up and it turns out not to be necessary, eventually higher level gear WILL be necessary. It's pretty much guaranteed to happen eventually. Even if all the nodes added with the expansion are accessable without high stats, eventually higher nodes WILL be added. It's pretty much inevitable.

Right now, high stat gear is relatively cheap because you don't NEED high stats to access anything in the game. Why buy gear you don't need? Once nodes are added that REQUIRE high stats (whether it comes with the expansion, or in a patch sometime later), that gear is going to shoot up in price as gatherers upgrade in order to be able to access the new content.

I'm assuming that's a typo and you meant level 60 combat class? Since you'll need to have a 50 combat class and have to have completed the 2.55 story to access anything Heavensward IIRC. About the gear upgrade, I'd expect 55-57 HQ to be better than current BiS and 58-60 NQ to be better than current BiS. Of course that's pure speculation but it would make sense.

And when I was talking about the 60 combat class requirement I meant that since gathering is most likely going to require flying that means you need to unlock flying for each of the new zones up to level 60. The thing is, even if you don't need flying at all to gather everything - it would still be almost required because it would be so much faster to gather with a mount that moves way faster.

I just really hope Square doesn't lock everything so that you must have a 60 battle class. Right now, you can get 50 for gatherers and crafters before hitting 50 combat class but at the same time it's impossible to get lucis weapons, beast tribe quests, and much higher leve exp without a 50 battle class.

Uhhh.. ._. There are some areas that can only be accessed by a flying mount?.... I did not know this. Then yeah, I really wouldn't be surprised if there are some nodes locked behind a fly-only area. Just one more challenge as gatherers.

I'm speculating on whether some mining nodes MUST require flying but there are certainly many areas that can only be accessed by flying as shown in some of the gameplay we've seen.

If there are nodes that require flying, I would hope that at the very least you can do the flying quests for each zone based on your DoH / DoL level rather than A) Complete all story quests for that zone or B) Be of a certain battle class level.

This is one thing that bugged me as beast tribe quests require a lvl 44-ish story quest to be completed, which is silly. It should be available regardless of your story progression.

It will have to be unless SE expects the new players to hit lv 50 in gathering, then hit a roadblock.. Farm lucis until they can move on to 3.0 nodes.. There HAS to be a fluid transition between lv 50 and lv 51.

It'd be like having to hit lv 50 on your combat class, then needing to go through and farm ST/WoD to reach i120 before proceeding to lv 51 zone. SE won't implement the new content this way.

It's not that silly. From a lore perspective, for each of the Beast Tribes you initially start out as an ambassador for a Grand Company. It only makes sense that they would trust you as an ambassador if you've done a significant number of good works for the nation - and those good works are accomplished as part of the Main Scenario. From a gameplay perspective, it's yet another way for SE to encourage folks to advance through Main Scenario, since they've made it clear that it's going to be a prerequisite for all kinds of things going forward.

Replace "i120" with "i90" and this is exactly what SE has done. You will not be able to proceed to a lvl 51 zone until you've farmed up enough gear to enter the Steps of Faith, a Main Scenario requirement preventing entry to the new Heavensward areas. To be fair, though, just because you can't access the new areas doesn't mean you can't continue leveling - SE has stated that there won't be any quest or anything preventing you from leveling to 60, so you can likely just continue running dungeons and doing Roulettes in order to level past 50 even if you can't access the new areas yet. There's a decent chance that all the current level 50 quests will give exp. Running Main Scenario might take you from level 50 to 60 all on its own!

Also we all need to take into account how long it'll take leveling from 50-60
I read around the forums tht it'll be almost like going form 0-50.
Gonna take a while considering its gathering and not a battle class where u can do dungeons, fates etc to net big exp.

Imo this thread should be more

I'm not sure what will happen, honestly. I keep asking myself what they will do with the current endgame nodes but I can't answer that.

As for leveling to 60.. I don't care what I'll have to do. If I'm not doing anything in particular with a few friends, I'd love to gather.

I've always tried to anticipate patches and get out there as early as possible to gather new shit. I made over 7m from being the first people to gather platinum ore which I sold for around 100k each as HQ.

Just speculating, but my suspicion for both DoL and DoH is that Supra tier stats will be at least the lowest base requirement for lvl51+ content.

If it isn't, it would make the Mastercraft/Fieldcraft Desynthesis aspect irrelevant. I don't think they'll do that.

Then they will expect all players to have achieved a supra and some decent stats to start "leveling" up to 60. Then there would be no point in having a level 51 crafted hatchet recipe lol. What will crafters craft?
Being gated by supra stats would be a bad choice as having those stats to allow u to "just level to 60" is just wtf lolllllll

So ppl geared up WONT have to waste gil "gearing up" as their stats will sustain them till later on ( maybe till level 53 etc ) and ppl will entry stats WILL have to spend gil/ craft their gear in order to keep up with the nodes.

There's absolutely no way thats going to happen. Otherwise gathering would be close to non-existent past 50, for the entire expansion until it receives a nerf. Of all the mmos i've played, none of them have handled content like this, because if they did there would be a lot of angry players - and for good reason. That would be no different than locking heavensward behind i120 instead of i90.

on ragnarok forager set are still over 2 million :) plus all melds it's not cheap...

And right now, for me, being all BiS is paying off for MIN and BTN. I can hit the 450/450 nodes, and the only gathering food I use anymore is mutton stew, 16 gil from NPC vendors.

I'm at 112/112 fish caught, with fully-upgraded gear for all gathering jobs, minus melds on the off-hands for MIN and BTN. But I wasn't at max gear when I caught all my fish - it wasn't needed. Food took me to the stats that I needed to catch 'em all. I geared up the rest of the way afterwards due primarily to some stupid OCD thing, but partially also because I knew it could come in handy once higher level requirements became necessary.

Folks with CUL leveled can procure their own food cheaply, so the demand for BiS gear is not high, particularly on MIN and BTN.

You need 400+ gathering for top fish, and IS needed BIS equipment to can reach that. You cannot do it without forager gear or Iron-Rod/Lucius.

Again, you can reach the 400 requirement without being fully decked-out. You'll need some pieces, yes, but food and Free Company actions can take you the rest of the way.

But all of this is beside the point, because we're talking about demand for best-in-slot gear. While you need good gear to catch the hardest fish - who, exactly, interested in catching the hardest fish? Pretty much only the hardcore fishers are interested in that. That's a subset of the total number of fishers around, and probably a fairly small subset at that.

So the point still stands that BiS gear does not have very high demand right now, as it is nice, but unnecessary to obtain the best items for BTN and MIN, and while it may be necessary to catch the best fish, those fish themselves are nice, but unnecessary. Now is the best time to purchase this gear, as the demand will go up once there's necessary items that require the stats on this gear, something that will likely happen with Heavensward.

Making previous gearing processes irrelevant is usually what expansions do deliberately in order to make it easier for players to catch up. If they didn't do this then after several expansions it would quickly become impossible for new players to ever catch up with the curve. Assuming the scaling matches with the combat gear scaling then the current best DoL/DoH equipment would cover you up until about level 55. Players below that gear level would be able to progress but would need to upgrade as they go, likely via new methods as part of level progression.

As another poster pointed out already, requiring some degree of endgame gear just to progress gathering (or crafting for that matter) into the expansion would be akin to requiring combat jobs be in full i120/i130 gear in order to be able to fight anything at level 51... It simply won't work like that.

I agree, there's going to be leapfrogging. That's expected.

I'm talking about Desynthesis though. Currently, Supra Mainhand (FC3x10+MCx3) and Foragers gear (MCx1 per item) and (Belt/Choker/Earring[?] FC1x10[?])are the only aspects of DoL that require desynthesis.

Can leapfrog the Supra and Foragers, but I bet we're going to land on another Demimateria-required turn-in or as mat for synthesis regardless (or Foragers/Supra could carry you through to the next tier).

Whether you buy gear or desynth > craft yourself, you are still passing that desynthesis gate. DoL is getting the equivalent of DoH's Masterbooks. Another chance at a Demimateria sink.

When they say "50-60 will feel like 1-50" that sounds to me like they're going to make the leveling process more difficult to compensate for the lack of new lvls (there's only 10).

And if that's how it's going to be, I'd expect them to throw some hurdles in the way.

There wont problems with Desnthesis with regards to Mastercraft and Fieldcraft 3s in Heavensward, that is guaranteed. There are 2 possible ways SE will handle it:

1. Mastercraft Demimateria and Fieldcraft 3s are used in level 51-60 recipes making Desnthesis still relevant.

2. New demimateria or Mastercraft 2 and Fieldcraft 4 will be used in 51-60 recipes making Desnthesis still relevant. It only affects the level 50 market in this case which doesn't matter and is irrelevant.

No matter what SE does, desynthesis will still be relevant in Heavensward.

DoL more than any other type class benefits from BiS available gear while leveling.

The better your gear, the faster you're going to generate XP

DoH have soft-caps through their rotations, combat classes have strength in numbers. DoL is solo and GP is finite.

Stacks and stacks of Cordial can help too

2m for the set isn't really that expensive.
2m per piece on the other hand, is overpriced.

Melding the Forager's pieces is actually very cheap due to 3 guaranteed slots and easy to reach caps.

They can just make it easier to optain Supra- and Lucis-Wapons. Like only needing 5 Moonstones, 15 Glacier Crystals and 5-10 giant clams for Lucis or discard the need of demimateria for Supra. They can make the first 51/52-rod slightly worse than Supra (but enought for new nodes - like 75% chance of gathering and 0-1% HQ), making Supra/Lucis optional but giving their owners a little headstart.

So people who made huge efforts to get their gear won't be totally outgeared by people who just hit 51 just an hour after finishing their Lvl-50-gatherer-quest.

What I think they should do when the expansion comes out is drop the quantity requirement for foragers items aka such as fragrant logs from 60 HQ to 30 HQ etc. Much like they do with relics, they should do same with gathering/crafting gear that requires trading of materials farmed.
