FFXIV on Project morpheus?

Oh please let this happen SE I would kill to run around Thanalan or Ishgard and see the sights though my characters eyes,

i just hope if they do they go all out and make 1st person like it was in beta where you could see your chocobo's head, head bobbing seeing your body and weapons :D

I think it's a cool idea, although I'm not sure how feasible it really is for an MMO. Theres a reason first person is usually just a side feature. Generally encounters are created with 3rd person view in mind. I think being in first person all the time in ffxiv would be more of a hindrance than allowing any sort of positive experience. Gimmicky at best.

VR was a fad, you mean to say. I was a kid when the VR arcade booths first came out... pterodactyl attack I think it was. It was pretty simplistic back then, mostly because of the lame CG. We've come a long way since then, and there's been alot of research into making VR less vomituous than it was in my ye olde days. The CG's caught up leaps and bounds making the idea of total immersion possible. I mean, look at some of the AAA titles of last year, practically movies! Sure, this stands to run afoul of the uncanny valley, but if VR can surpass that, we have gaming's next big frontier. Hell, I'm stoked for CCP's Valkyrie, just hope the gear is affordable when that becomes a thing. Though yes, we've all seen this coming if anyone's ever played/watched .hack or any of it's inspired titles.

As for the feasibility of a VR MMO, well, you're moving on your own. As if you're living it. It can work. the only limits from a gameplay point of view will come from the players themselves.

errr, in a fps, racing game why not.... but a mmorpg like FF14, please no. it's a loose of time, money and energy for a gadget that will be barely usable most of the time. this sort of stuff work well in fast paced game where our reaction will be tested... but in FF14, with the lag and the slow paced fight... it will be more a pain than anything.

they are the worst example, there we are not talking about stuff like occulus rift or morphgeus, but full dive system, where the brain is directly link to the game (in a way) then no, it's not a good example.

this two work because the player are not looking to the game, but are totally inside it. the character is the player. them movement are the one of the player. morpheus and occulus rift are far from this. they only cover the sights and sound... they are barely close of what is used in SAO and accel world.

Try playing hard content in first person... it's impossible to see what's happening. Especially if you're melee.

I leveled my Archer in first person... it is nice and fresh but SE would be forced to place a whole new set of alarms in order to make you aware of AoEs and other mechanics... since you will only see in front of you.

Its a good system for FPS or horror games, but for MMO such as this... I don't think it'll be as good as it sounds.

For everyday gaming no. Look at how popular the Nintendo Wii was, you could move to control your character but did other console manufacturers try to emulate it, yes, but it failed. Most gamers want to sit on their arse and play, not move around. What good is VR if you sit on your fat arse. It has it's uses sure but it wont be main stream.

Given how variable the framerate on PS4 is in XIV (you need at minimum a perfect locked 60, 75+ preferable), and that the one article mentioned they had to 'downgrade the graphics quite a bit', I'm just assuming this'll never see public eye. You don't just release something that makes the game look uglier for a peripheral.

Actually, that's the problem with the old VR. If you read up on the Oculus Rift you can see that the key to making VR work over long play runs is... dropping frames. VR in the old style was nauseating because your eyes are telling your brain one thing, "You're about to run into a tree! Dooooodge!" while every other sense is saying that your arse is planted on a couch. It's amazing that the way to trick your brain out of it is NOT seemless FPS playback.

Not exactly. When you have a big area that you need to be able to see whats going on in many scenarios it becomes an issue. There's good reason why any good healer or tank in a run through video has their camera zoomed out to max range, because it's beneficial to be able to see that add running in to grab it or see that ranged dps take a facemelt to heal them up while you're also watching out for telegraphs or other mechanics in the environment. Not to mention that they may be out of your range so you need to run over to them fast to heal them.. but you're in 1st person... how would you quickly find them? That's not player limitation, thats a matter of how the encounter is designed. In a game like this 3rd person is pretty vital. For VR or any game that uses first person to be 100% viable, the game needs to be designed around the concept that first person is the default view port for the game. Notice FPS very rarely if ever offer a 3rd person view, and that's not usually when combat is going on for those who do. though there are exceptions and at the same time your camera functionality is extremely limited.

But don't take my word for it. Put it to the test, try running a higher end dungeon or raid in 100% first person and see how it will affect your ability to be as effective as you would be in the 'normal' view.

I'm not discounting VR, I think it's an awesome idea with a lot of potential and hopefully one day it will become more than a fad or a gimmick. But I do think for it to be viable games have to be designed around it rather than just expecting to be able to plug it into any old game and be perfect. It would also be cool to use in FFXIV, just I'd still switch to the old trusty monitor in dungeons and raids.

My comment that you quoted was about a VR MMO. One designed for 1st person. It could work, the only limitations (besides the technical ones because we can't make such a game yet) would be from the ability of the players to play with 1st person. The awareness level would have to be way higher than 3rd person games, and party communication would be necessary to avoid tunnel visioning leading to unnecessary deaths.

In general reply to the OP -
I'd love this, if only just when running around the FC house/cities/other more socialable areas, but as soon as something comes up to you or you're playing melee DPS, all you'll get is a face-full of a monster....
Or, if it's being tanked, a face-full of a monster's arse. :| Can you imagine trying to DPS Titan down...? I can only imagine how our characters must feel about this, half the time - especially monks. Do not want. xD (though I'm sure some wouldn't have qualms with Garuda or Shiva >_>)

Otherwise, this would be awesome, to further live the feeling of 'being there' - I just don't see it usable for a good chunk of content that people are occupied with often in any MMO (Dungeons/raids, or our coils/trials, etc).

I'm imagining playing monk with this. My arms are already tired.

Occolus rift and the like is going to be a thing. Anyone who does not think so is clueless. Does not mean it will be the only thing out there. That said I doubt Ffxiv vill have it and even if it does it will probably be bad. VR works for any type of game, mmo or fps but the game should be made for it to begin with.

For about three months sure. We all have TVs now don't we.

Savage FCOB - changes from Normal FCOB = First Person View locked.

Don't see VR MMOs being a good thing. Full Body Immersion like Sword Art Online would be cool though. Without all the perma dead though
