Casting Protect cross-class

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, I'm still a new player and I'm trying to figure all this out. I can't find anywhere just how much Protect protects. Is it dependent on a stat? If so which? And does that mean it's less potent if I use it cross-class? I've cast protect in dungeons as an archer when the healer didn't have it. Is that any use at all? XD

Could be wrong but I vaguely remember from a long time ago the number being about 15%. The only difference between a WHM's Protect and a cross-classed Protect is Proshell, a WHM trait that also increases magic defence. So if a WHM casts it, it raises both physical and magical defence. If anyone else casts it, it raises only physical defence.

Its approximately a 15% boost in physical (and magic with WHM trait) defence. It work similarly to WAR foresight. Iirc, WAR foresight (20% increase in physical defence) was calculated to give approx 7% damage mitigation, so this would put protect at a rough value of 4-5% damage mitigation.

This is all rough figures with different classes having different MDef and PDef.

A WHM Protect will overwrite a Protect cast by a SCH. The buff icons are different. If a SCH casts protect after a WHM does, it's not applied (non-stacking.)

There's not a lot of value in cross-classing skills in FFXIV since the support traits don't go with it. Still 15% PDef is better than 0%

I still have Protect and Stoneskin on my Paladin. It still have its uses outside parties, esp when farming low level fates. The difference of having Protect from none isn't marginal since I can see a considerable reduction in terms of damage received. As for Stoneskin, I still use it when farming ST.

as archer/brd you wont have access to it later so you wont have this dilemma,

on pld ss is very useful and protect can be useful too..

protect is great for pld's in low level if you have a healer who hasn't obtained it yet. and very useful in solo stuff.

in endgame protect is less useful by any class who can cast it compared to whm but is still always cast by someone who can.
in the case of pld again, protect can help keep someone up if they happen to die and get raised. it frees the healer to worry about heals first then protect a little later if needed, as in if a whm is in group and so can overwrite it,

its a tool available to healers that last 30mins and reduces damage taken by everyone, so it goes without saying it is useful, however im sure theres better skills you could cross class while you have access to them as an archer.

When leveling up low level characters and doing Hunting Log entries above my level, like when I did Rogue for example, I would cross class Protect, cast it, and then swap out to a different skill since it usually lasted me as long as I needed (up to 30 min anyway) as long as I didn't change classes or level synch for a fate. Swapping out cross class skills will usually trigger a 1 min cooldown so that's something useful ahead of time when first going to a class to solo stuff, vs. on demand.

It's not necessary of course, and besides not available as cross class actions to a lot of Jobs once you move to those, but it's helpful early on when not level synching for fates or going in and out of dungeons.

This is why, when I'm on SCH and there is a WHM in my party, I prefer the WHM to cast Protect and Stoneskin at the start and don't try to typically cast it myself. I think a lot of healers, a lot of players in general actually, are unaware of the stat boost that WHM gets on these two spells. The nice thing is, a WHM can and should override a cross-spell that is cast by those who don't know better, and the cross-class can't override the WHM cast, which helps tremendously I think.

Then we have these cases where the tank casts Protect -after- the WHM healer has casted theirs. (Happened to me in a dungeon).

I always cast Protect as WHM regardless of who is in the party, even if there's another WHM.

On WHM I do:
Protect(CNG8)
Swiftcast(THM26)+StoneSkin II(CNJ50)
and hope the Tank doesn't run off. Sometimes I'll reverse casting these, with SSII first at the beginning before the the last cutscene viewer finishes and wait for the cutscene watcher before casting Protect.

On SCH:
Protect
Summon EOS/Selene
Manually Stone Skin on myself, other players, tank last, then the fairy.

One of these days, I will care enough to get Stoneskin..For quite some time, I've been a fairly good SCH without SS. Not to say it's useless or anything, but I never found it...-needed-. So I had no motivation to go get it. >w>
