siren

I just had to go back into Pharos Sirius and it just reminded me just how disappointed I was with Siren. I really dislike the music in there, it doesn't (to me) seem to fit the idea of Siren, then when you actually fight her she blasts random opera style squawkings during the fight. I guess I think of Siren as being a bit like a mermaid, meant to entice with music. She sounds as about as enticing as beiber.

I quite like her design and the rest of the dungeon is ok if nothing special, I'd just forgotten how disappointed I was overall.

I don't listen to Justin beiber, but I'm pretty sure his squawking isn't opera style. At least, if that's what the kids are listening to today, I'm more out of touch than I thought. :p

I thought the music in the dungeon was pretty fitting. Something haunting that will kill you if you find it's source. What type of music do you think that a Siren would sing? Only other style I can think of is what they used in "Oh Brother, Whereart thou". As for the fight being disappointing, I think a lot of people are just sad that fights like Siren, Diablos, and Fenrir are in game and they aren't anything SUPER special. I love seeing those bosses, but of course I want more.

Now several of the fights themes in this game are really cool until they switch into fairly generic J-Rock. I typically enjoy the first half of dungeon and boss music more.

The dungeon, music and the fight is alright!

Pharos Sirius actually has one of my favorite BGM.

Pharos Sirius has one of the best themes in all of FFXIV imo. I guess everyone has different tastes.

I love Pharos BGM, Siren looks awesome, but I agree her shrill noises she makes when casting a song is not seducing or charming its gross.

I'd just like to know why did they have to make her based off of a cacatua. They don't even sing that well.

Wow, I knew I didn't like her hair in FFXIV, but that's the first time I thought of it that way. I just remember at the time thinking that she looks too much like Garuda. Glancing back at her model in FF8, she had a LOT fewer feathers and bird-features in general. Although I prefer her design from FF8, I guess having us fight a huge naked woman with pubic feathers wouldn't fly well with modern graphics in a Teen rated game.

Pharos Sirius has my favorite music too. The music sounds like...well, a siren song. OP, what exactly do you think it should sound like? Mind providing an example?

Oh no now you said sample a song all I can think about its the Simpson s episode where marges sisters are mermaids! (Not what I had in mind) what I was thinking of was a beautiful melodic harmony that is quite haunting, with more reference to her harp. I see a lot of you really like this music, the best bit for me is the opening but to me it still sounds like a schoolboy choir rather than an enticing mermaid. I find the notes to high and sound a bit strained if that makes any sense. The odd notes she does whilst fighting don't seem to go with anything (and sound like an opera singer gargling). I'll see if I can find some music that would be better (for me anyway). I like siren from other ff games too which is why I was more disappointed I guess. I was hoping for more from fenrir and diablos too.

Honestly no offense OP, but I'm just not really understanding where you're coming from with this. "Through the Gloom" is such a beautiful song! Especially the Extended version <3 (I was soooo happy they released that for us to hear, and put inside the dungeon!) I personally feel it does fit Siren and the dungeons theme quite well.

It's as if a lost maiden is beckoning the adventurers with her call to climb the light house to save her (but really to their doom!) The haunting melodies in the song, remind me of Siren playing her harp, and the higher pitched vocals we hear remind more of Siren, not "choir boys."

As for Siren's look, I don't get why you are trying to think of mermaids. Sirens throughout mythology have been depicted more bird-like than fish-like or "mermaid"-like. So imagining Sirens as "mermaids" really doesn't quite bring up any images I would personally associate as a Siren.

I personally LOVE Siren's look compared to her FFVIII look, but not much pleased me in VIII, so I'll leave that at that...

Anywho, I enjoy the song very much! It's absolutely one of my favorite from ARR's soundtrack. I personally think it fits Siren and the dungeon to a T.

Actually in some languages (including Italian, which descends from Latin and Greek), "Sirena" is the word used to translate the english "Mermaid", so I get where the OP is coming from. However, you are in the right to. To better explain...

My only complaint (aside from the absurd difficulty of the original dungeon) is that Siren wasn't a primal. She acts the part in spades and, for a while at least, had the power to back it up (seriously, she was just as strong as Story Ifrit if the fight had been straight strengthened to 50). I still consider her an unofficial primal as, at present, she's still as strong as Story Ifrit. Her dungeon is also the only 4 player dungeon with three scut bosses so she's got alot going for her. You could say Square wanted to give Siren special treatment without making it look like they were.

Pharos Sirus and Ultima have the best soundtrack, imo. The background song fits her.

I'll redo Pharos Sirius just for that then gotta enjoy it ^^.

The music in Pharos is incredible.

Incredibly underwhelming. We could of used like sound barrier
or something where everyone has their own respective barrier to ignore her singing.
Or do something to interrupt her singing, I'd like more environment handeling stuff against bosses like SVHM.

Agreed with the majority here - I love Pharos' BGM. It's one of the few I don't play my own music over (that, and Ramuh/Titan/Shiva/Ultima/Garuda and WoD... but thats about it).
The opera-esk SFX she does in mid-fight is a bit odd to me, but I would think it's hard to sing beautifully for any length when you have a bunch of people smacking and blowing you up... xD;
j/k probably has to do with wanting to keep the sound bytes brief and easy to hear. Make it sound too eerie and it sounds too much like the dungeon BGM's chorus. Which can easily be taken as her haunting singing from the top of the tower, echoing down throughout it.
The pick-up of the melody is the part I love the most - like an epic to get to this dangerous but beautiful creature.

I will agree with the fight itself, though - it is a bit underwhelming compared to the mood of beautiful danger the dungeon music sets. Mechanics-wise, same with Fenrir..... especially Fenrir. There's more pattern to his fight than plaid. ~_~ His mechanics felt lazily or uncreatively planned.
Diablos was at least unique with the doors (that is, before people learned/geared to mechanic-ignore them.... I still mark them when I heal that dungeon, though) the other two..... not so much.

The bird part of her design... yeah, not a fan of her 'hair' (and not particularly a fan of those particular parrots. Too unpredictable for me. I'll take my conures). They would probably be better off designing her after a canary (since they're typically thought of as 'signing like a canary').

Depending on the language (mostly Latin-based ones such as Italian, Spanish or French), the word used for them (Sirena/Sirene/etc.) is applied for both, mermaid the half-fish, AND siren the harpy.
So for anyone who's not a native (English) speaker, I can see why they'd be confused on her account.

As for the music, I found Pharos Sirius to be VERY fitting (enticing voice with a touch a sadness), but eh...different strokes, different folks, I guess...

One of the best things SE ever did in a patch was expanding that music and putting it on a loop.... It's a shame that so many players had moved well past it to ever get to hear it that way. I only discovered this when going back for my Zodiak and was soooo happy. Always thought that awesome intro was too short and basically wasted.

Well I concede on the mermaid thing, I only know English and some Spanish, that's my limit in the area of languages. So I'm sorry, I didn't know.

As for her look, I stand by that I find her look much more appealing here, I enjoy her design here much more than VIII, again my opinion. To each their own.

I also stand by what else I said, her music fits her and her dungeon, and what gorgeous music it is and shall remain! <3 <3

I'm not sure I can count the fight before her a 'boss'. It's more like a regular trash monster that drops a chest.

She's more of a FFV reference. Anyway, Siren isn't a Primal in this game because the siren are a race. We may see more of them in the future.

Nah, I don't think Sylphs would have worked as a beast tribe for Siren if she were a Primal. Mermaids/Lamiae though...
