Can someone, a staff confirmed that the Mac client is going to be available for free for current FFXIV players?
Essentially, Mac is going to use a wrapper over the Windows files inside the Transgaming package. Exactly the same package like GW2 that if you open the app files contents. It's a just the same files as Windows version.

If you see and think PC cost $2000, because you're looking at pre-built by Dell/HP over pricing product in retail store. Buying a 4k TV plug into PS doesn't mean your PS4 is chucking out 4k pixels. Upscaled.

While I'm not shocked persay by the choice to force existing players to buy the mac client if they want to play in OSX, I am surprised by it... Especially as I don't think they'll find many takers. Anyone who is already playing and has a mac among their computers has surely gotten themselves set up to play by now (whether through bootcamp or a virtual pc). According to sort of the philosophy Yoshida presented in the past, I would have thought creating the mac client was all about attracting new subscribers, namely mac users that don't have a Windows computer, and that don't want to have to install Windows on their computer in order to play a game. I guess they'll still do that, but I just don't see the point in not letting existing players have access to the mac client via their windows license.
Why would the PS3 client work on the mac? PS, mac, and Windows are all totally different platforms, but at least mac and windows run on the same hardware architecture...Quote:

Windows and Mac coexist together, one uses a wrapper to get Windows file run on OS X side. That wrapper can be done by community, just like how PC can use Playstation emulators / Xbox emulators. -

If we have to buy it again to be able to play on Mac, I just won't bother. I'll carry on using Steam in-house streaming to play it instead. That works even if you didn't buy the game via Steam and is quite playable over LAN.

well lets use blizzard games as an example, you can dl both PC / MAC version as long as you BOUGHT a copy , rather in PC or mac.
I bought SC2 for PC, then later on I switched to a mpb, and i was able to dl the mac version and play it there without ANY additional cost.
Why do we have to pay twice for the FFXIV one just for a mac version? this is kind of stupid.. -

I suppose the existing Steam version getting Mac support for free would be some consolation, if that's ever provided. To sell a Mac version but have the Steam version PC-only would probably not be a good idea (the draw of having a Steam version in the first place would be further diminished if that was the case). -

Forcing cross platform players to buy the original game has some merit when you put consoles into the mix. But given that this is a subscription based game, forcing these people to then purchase an expansion per platform is pretty hilarious.
SE's finance department really are doing there best to drag Yoshida's hard earned name through the mud for every penny it's worth with these moves. I've been playing MMOs since Ultima Online and I have never seen a pricing structure even remotely as toxic and disrespectful to the player base as Heavensward. -

It really is pretty crappy. If you're going to charge for it, at least make an ACTUAL client like Blizzard does, not just slap some Wine wrappers on it and call it a day. We all know it's going to run like crap because of it.

When I heard the way they were referring to the Mac version of the game upon announcing it, I was worried this was the case... I understand why they are charging for it being a "separate platform," but at the same time I cannot honestly say the last time I bought a game that had PC/Mac versions and have them be separate purchases. Other major MMOs I've played have allowed me to just sign in online and download whichever version I need, I buy a game on Steam and I get both versions if they are available... SE's decision to separate the two seems like a step backwards. My desktop is a Windows box and my laptop is a Macbook, which I run FFXIV through bootcamp on the Windows partition. I was really rather excited to be able to download the Mac version, but there's no way I could ever justify another game purchase just for that.
In short, this is a big disappointment when so much of the industry already offers PC/Mac versions for the same purchase. -

Hmm, I figured you'd have to buy it again, so I ordered it already! (I also thought there might be an early access period for the Mac version, but the download section says "this product will be available on: 2015-6-23.")
It would be nice if it were a free download - so far I've purchased it on PC, PS3 and PS4. Haven't bought it on Steam yet though, hahaha!
It is funny though since I already play FFXIV on my Mac, but I have to boot my "game OS" (Windows) on it first.
One thing I don't entirely understand, however - with the free trial of FFXIV, you download the client for free, so if you already have a subscription can't you continue playing without having to buy and install a new copy?
If they implement free trials for Mac, you may be able to download the Mac client without paying and continue to play using your existing character and subscription.

If you have money to buy a MAC then you have money to buy a MAC game. Mac is another platform so you need to pay to play the game in that platform. Different platform means different licensing fees for the company and I won't count the different optimizations the game might need to run properly on a different platform. Plus the company needs to make money after all. FFXIV is not a free to play game so do not expect them to hand over free cookies to you. The PS3 to PS4 free upgrade campaign was very cool and lasted very long. Mac is a completely different story.
