Does anyone else miss boat rides from ffxi (espcially fishers?)

One of the best parts of ffxi was the boat rides
e.g. Mhaura > Selbina
e.g. Carpenter's landing barge
e.g. bibiki > purongogo

For the sake of fisherfolk everywhere, we need at least -one- beautiful boatride. Preferably through a really beautiful area (carpenter's landing was honestly amazing).

There is just something special about traveling across an ocean, or down a serene river.

I'm guessing there's no chance of getting it in this expansion. But hopefully in the next!

i actually wish we could make our own boats n go fishing in certain areas theres plenty of ocean around thats just for show why not put it to use :(

I sure do. When they said they were adding a boat subzone in one of the patch notes I got excited, only to realize it's just an unmoving boat off the coast of Costa. Not that Aetherytes being everywhere would leave them with any purpose aside from maybe some special monsters that could spawn on a boat ride, or perhaps some unique fish.

Never know. They might implement sky fishing off the side of the FC airships :)

I miss Sea Horror and The pirates attack !! (well... the ghouls....)

I really missed them, I loved being low level, running outside and getting destroyed by pirates.

It was certainly unique but FF11 had lots of little things like that, but none of these would be welcome in today's gaming age.

On the rare occasion you had a Sea Horror or Pirate attack and were a high enough level to fight them it could be fun, but it was generally a long, boring, unnecessary timesink that I could have done without.

Unleash the Kraken! Funny how Sea Horror could find you sometimes lol, probably chasing someone. Pirates and whales plus the birds flying by. Anyone remember how awesome Sanctuary of Z'tah was?

I miss them for the pirate battle. I was hoping they might add it in the future - or sky pirates considering heavensward.

Yeah, I miss them. Considering everything is done in Duty Finder and we have Teleports, just to have an airship or ship/ferry to sit on and watch the world go by would be nice.

The ride itself? Sure, I miss it. If you're too low level, you could hide down below if trouble struck and stay safe.

What I don't miss are the waits for it, since it operated on a very set schedule real time, so if you didn't catch the ferry, you were SOL for a while.

I miss them, too. Love them or hate them, they were still a part of the ffxi experience that most of us that played ffxi remember.

This game has so many beautiful locations that getting a chance to ride a ferry and see them from a new perspective and perhaps battle some pirates while you're at it sounds like an awesome idea to me. I hope the dev team puts some type of feature like this into the game at some point. And hey, put a train on those tracks in thanalan already :p

Yeah, but i didn't mind that as much. just made it a little more realistic. But i do miss the airship rides. I loved looking over the edge and watching the city get bigger as you approached. Was very cool.

Yeah, I miss that too. Like how you could see that big tree in windurst far in the distance, and there was some sort of glitch in the side of the airship where you could run right over the edge and land on the little platform right outside the entrance door in the side of the ship. I do wish we had something similar to that in this game, even if it was just a simple boat ride that fishers would get more use out of than anyone else.

There should a scenic boatride option that costs considerably less, but isn't guaranteed to be safe. Unique fishing locations, the possibility of being boarded by pirates or attacked by monsters, maybe some unique Triple Triad NPCs? All those things you loved/hated about the FFXI ferry between Selbina/Mhaura, but completely optional. Being forced to spend 15+ minutes on a boat when all you want is to get from point A to point B is frustrating. But being a separate option from our current transportation is something different entirely.

I think there should be the option to ride the boat for a cutscene or for the adventure (actual 5-10 minute boat/airship ride). Things could happen on the ride too, like being attacked by pirates where you can get various vanity loot or special deep-sea fish to catch. In the airship you could run into trouble with some Wyverns (since...you know...3.0) or play some special airship only mini-game to win some gil or an item. Not to mention the view, and that is critical...if it looks boring (like the boat ride in 1.0) it's gonna be boring, XI's boat rides were fun because there was stuff to see and things to do.

I remember the very first day Aht Urghan launched eagerly awaiting the boat with other players. I boarded the boat and we fought a fish that was Called for Helped. Almost died from the AOE.

Then I set my home point in Whitegate and never took the boat again. What a colossal waste of time. 15 minutes of staring at the scenery. Practically the only reason you took them was if you were a new player or a fisher. Glad to see them gone.

I wouldn't say it was great. But when you had to wait 15~ 30 minutes to get somewhere on a slow boat, you didn't have much of a choice. Ask anyone who ran from point A and B in 1.0if they miss running around the world. While I did understand its purpose as what you had to do before getting an airship pass, or the modern home point warps. I miss it more for the scenery but not to the point where I'd want to do it again, Unless I had to hunt pirates for quest items that was about the only real draw to that one boat ride.

I remember 1 of the boat rides turned out to be a fight to the bitter end lol... with Sea horror and ghouls.

Dead bodies everywhere.

I miss the 1.0 ferry rides from Limsa to Thanalan. It made the world seem bigger. Given the choice, i would want it back.

Yes I miss boat rides. I was disappointed that the fishing boat in this game does not move and is basically an island with no monsters or pirate raids.

I'd like to remind a lot of the people who are "nostalgic" for the boat rides that them being "really pretty" isn't the reason people hate them.
The reason people hate them is because they took FOREVER and were required, not to mention the chance of death if you were underleveled and/or unaware of the danger.
One MMO reviewer, on the topic of a game that still has boats as a feature and requirement to get around, put it best: "I shouldn't have to find a way to escape the tedium in a game i play to escape the tedium."

To answer your question: Aye I miss it. :( There weren't even any chocobos or airships back then either, so it really made it feel like you were part of a large world. Teleports were on occasions only use.

I overall miss the game world feeling like a actual place. Distance wasn't just a mundane 5hink it was another challenge to overcome, especially when mixed with the general danger the open world possessed.

1.0 at least had teeth. This games open world got neutered and any semblance of the open world being important flew out the window it's now relegated to a glorified waiting room with little to no reason to even exist besides a staging point for instanced events.

I still have some faith in open world content. Especially knowing they are barring access to ishguard until a certain point in the story. Most likely meaning flying mount accessable content may actually pose some risks.

The "rush" is that we're paying for our time in this game. Time spent doing nothing in the game is time better spent elsewhere.
To get from point A to point B, you have to ride a boat. To ride the boat, you have to wait. During that wait, you have the following things to do:
1) Wait. Find something else to do in the real world.
2) Hope the boat comes under attack and either kill the enemies or die.
3) Fish.

Since #1 also overlaps with #2 and #3, that is tedium. #2 even adds extra tedium by forcing you to ride the boat again if you die.
When you teleport, your wait time is as long as it takes to load the zone. This means you can go do things faster, as there is no "time wall" between you and what you want to do.
Anything that takes you away from doing *something* within the game is a form of avoidable tedium. Using a boat once in a while is OK, but them being a regular thing is just not going to happen.
There's a reason the VAST majority of MMOs dropped the idea of boat rides. The amount of work to create them is simply not worth the end result. You are specifically creating something players have derided as a feature for SIXTEEN YEARS.

The boat/airship rides...

1st time: "hey this is kinda neat!"
4th time: "I guess I can go make a sandwhich, and watch the scenery go by"
20th time: "ugh, I'll come back when it's over"
100 billionth time: "oh yeah, screw this. /logout"

I enjoyed the boat rides/airship rides for the first couple of years!...not so much the last 8 yrs though, I got old to wait....and wait. The ride between Al Zahbi & Nashmau was drool/sleep inducing lol

I miss fishing on the boat and sea horror waiting at the door to murder a bunch of rmt. I don't miss airships/boats being a requirement to get anywhere. It would be nice if the boat in the Rhotano sea would move around while fishing. It wouldn't even have to dock (no waiting!), they could just say you took a smaller boat to get on-board so it doesn't "ruin immersion" when you just warp up there. Just changing scenery in the background while going for neptos would be more interesting then a static view of Costa.

I'm happy we don't have FFXI travel... certainly it was "realistic" but it was impractical. If we have the option of traveling in an open area by air or seacraft as an FC? I think that it would be AWESOME to have this back, because then you have a group for any special encounters and everything, and there are special things to be done. And if all rewards for these "missions" go straight to company coffers, that would be awesome....
