Why do I receive spam gil-seller messages practically every minute when I'm logged in? Solving this problem is not incredibly difficult; dozens of other MMOs have managed to resolve the issue.
But is it rocket science? :P
Why not provide us a solution if you want it solved, if it's so easy? And what are these "dozens of other MMOs" that you talk about?
Also what the hell is rocket surgery?
Personally, never seen an MMO that didn't have that problem. :P
can you name 1 mmo that has solved this issue? cause I played about 17 so far... they are all the same in regards to rmt spam.
I've played way more than 17, and I can say with certainty that the majority of them are worse than XIV.
I know OP probably ment rocket "science" but....

...Guys, I think the OP is trolling you all. >w>
I don't ever remember seeing this problem when I played Everquest... Just gotta go old school
Rocket surgery made me giggle :$
The messages have gotten worse not just frequency but the ones where they use your name.
I say they just take some people's suggestions and block all tells.
Make it so you don't get a tell except unless its from some one in your
1 free company
2 link shells
3 the special exception if you have a party finder going on so people can ask questions and the people in your party.
4 oh ya and friend list too.
lol rocket surgery

Only way to avoid receiving RMT tells is /busy & being in dungeons, trials, raids. Or being in a closed server 99% of the time like Ragnarok. Since I moved on that server 2 months ago, I only received 3 RMT tells, whereas I was receiving 3-4 per day on Odin (and that one is closed 50% of the day)

Guessing it's a pretty often misused idiom, like how often you see people spelling rouge instead of rogue, recieve instead of receive, effect instead of affect, your instead of you're (you are), their instead of they're (they are) or there (opposite of here) etc.
Why don't you all talk about the subject of the thread instead of making your inability to understand a simple joke so painfully obvious?
Because rocket science is too mainstream
Because the subject of the thread IS a joke. There is not a single MMO that has thwarted RMT and there is no effective means to stop it. The only thing that can be done is /blist and report every RMT you come across and pray that the GMs cull the herd just a little bit, but the RMT will always come back.
Only games I can think of that have no gold selling spam was Wildstar it had it in the beginning then gold selling spam kinda just died off. Probably due to majority of those who remained didn't buy from them. But Wildstar itself didn't do anything different then FFXIV is doing in terms of preventing it.
I'd love to have a way to take your name out of the player search menus while not removing you from Dungeon ques if that's possible :)
An addon doesn't mean the problem is solved, that just means someone made a chat filter to stop RMT but it could also be stopping legit messages from getting through and you would never know. They only other way RMT can be stopped in an MMO is if people do not buy the currency in the game. Even crappy games have RMT because people are willing to buy over trying to farm. No MMO is without RMT, hell most online games that aren't even MMOs have this problem.
While it's true that RMT will always exist at some degree or another so long as someone is willing to buy gil with real money, but that doesn't mean that SE should just lay down and let the RMT run wild.
We only have the assurance that accounts are getting banned to go on. If you report a group of bots farming their way up to 50, or report farming bots already at 50, it's likely you'll continue seeing them for at least a full month. And that kind of response time for blatant RMT is embarrassing. Telling the in-game GMs through the ticket system will net you a response in hours, and it usually goes like this,
"Thank you for reporting this RMT behavior. Please place a report through the support section on the ffxiv site. As RMT is such a common issue, we can only give this automated response"
And you'll continue to see the bot farm for weeks.
If you report someone for RMT advertising, you'll get an automated response within 10 min, saying just about the same thing but without telling you to report them somewhere else.
Why don't the ingame GMs have the power to ban these accounts? And if they do, why aren't they doing it?
Rocket surgery?

It doesn't take rocket appliances!

this was made for that :D
But there is some weird chat filter... still didnt figure it out but got censored a few times in /tell and so did friends. Its always a "WTF why no answer /did i say something wrong/ you afk/ you busy?" situation resulting XD
I personally noticed firsttime when I wrote a friend "Gotta make a call" and once I split the sentence after like 20 tries sending as full it worked... oddly every other /tell inbetween came through... I can explain it as a possible RMT thing but the other situations it appeared no clue :/
Wildstar itself kinda died off, so I don't know if that's really a good example. (It also made me miss that our mailboxes are restricted to friends only, so much RMT spam in my mailbox during the first few days of the game I made the mistake of buying)
/anon would be great - there are times where I'd prefer not to be bugged by people while doing my own thing. Especially since I'm sick right now QQ
I can't believe you all are making such a big deal out of "rocket surgery." Have you ever heard of mixed metaphors? Rocket science and brain surgery. Mix 'em. Bam. Rocket surgery. My last boyfriend was a rocket scientist by profession, and my best friend always called him a rocket surgeon. I thought it was hilarious.
There's also "brain science" but it's not nearly as funny because medicine is a kind of science.
Also, RMT tells have been really bad on Lamia lately. Maybe due to the free login thingy?
nope. RMT tells are bad on the servers where people are buying gils. But congrats for being on a gil buying server I guess :p
(I was on balmung before, and switched to Cerberus for 2.4 patch, and I may have had a dozen of RMT tells at most since I started to play, in august 2013)
I've been laughing at this Rocket Surgery since yesterday.
What's funnier is all the baddies clamouring around about a joke.
Lighten up, Jeebers. So many stiffs around here.
My jimmies are rustled by rocket surgery ok. Stupid colloquialisms! ENGINEERING YO. Go rocket engineers
I know that they have to thoroughly investigate every reported bot and RMT spammer to ensure that the accounts are actually being used for RMT & botting, I just want a more efficient means to report and silence the RMT spammers. I would be happy to, in addition to clicking on the offender's name and selecting "Report" that is automatically flags the reported account for investigation while also temporarily muting the reported account for as long as I am logged on to the character that I made the report with.
Problem with that is that it can be abused by the players to mute an innocent person intentionally. Sure, they may put up a minimum flagging requirement before muting anyone, but it only takes a second to get players to follow the mob mentality and end up reporting the person anyway.
