How SE thanks its current player base

Celebrate 4mill users by playing with people that didn't want to pay for the game and will clog the servers for a week!

How about something nice for people that subscribe instead? :D

Seriously, If I could I would give you two likes for this answer.

I understand the point he is saying. As a business SE does need to run promotions to get players to come back. However, a full week of free sub is NOT THE WAY.

1. Golden Saucer is already super congested and will only get worse, us on Gilga and Ragn will suffer dearly.

2. If the people quit before... this isn't going to suddenly bring them back. Maybe you'll get a dozen triple triad fanatics, but odds are they already re-subbed once they heard Golden Saucer was coming.

3. If they want to do "free login weekend" there should be a free log-in server or close off the servers with crazy high populations from this promotion.

4. Actually make free login weekend only a weekend.

Oh look Balmung is whining about large populations again. Cry harder... please

I haven't really had many congestion or queue issues at all, so I am perfectly fine with this decision. I'm really glad to hear about the 4 million registered accounts!

I'm on Gilgamesh, getting into the gold saucer can be annoying, but not that hard or long of a wait. I normally sit there and try to port in every minute, I'm usually in within five minutes, never longer. Sometimes I have a queue when I log into gilga, but it's the same ordeal as the gold saucer queue, doesn't take too long to get it.

I've played mmos that have like 5-10 hour queues on certain instances, so it could be so much worse.

Do you feel it's ultimately the responsibility of the developers to load balance the servers properly, or the responsibility of the players who are paying the developers a monthly subscription service fee? Just curious.

Would be cool if they extended everybodies sub by the number of days people get to play for free, but honestly I don't expect that or think it will ever happen. At the end of the day I'm legacy and the lifetime discount keeps me pretty happy anyways :P

The selfish side of me thinks, oh mah gawd - there goes getting into the Golden Saucer again. Oh, and all instances will be laggy - great!

But, looks like it lines up with PAX and that tells me they probably have some juicy info to lock in these free subbing players... Thats neat, and with more money they may consider making a server block dedicated to the Aether Data Center, and Balmung in particular lol. "Oh its your fault for asking for all RP players to come, and creating so many alts" I do neither of those thanks, and I joined when the server wasn't full.

It does say in the requirements that the account has to be inactive to get the free time, sadly. My account is up in 4 days so I won't get the free time. Still I prefer them to do free time, gets more people to play and more to start paying which leads to more revenue for the game.

Basically, this is a chance for the people who quit because XIV didn't scratch their particular itches to come back and see if the itch is now being scratched.

Whether it's the chocobo racing or triple triad, the addition of the silly time wasters may be just the thing that tips someone from "meh XIV was too boring" to
"by the Twelve COLLECTIBLE CARD GAME!"

As for the question of whether it's up to SE to load balance, or the players - SE does its best to lock down character creation on Balmung, and people don't keep trying to keep making characters on it anyway. Lamia is crowded and heavily populated too, but I haven't been locked out of the Gold Saucer once, surprisingly enough.

Sorry guys, I have to agree with the OP, allowing pubs into the golden saucer day 1 was a BAD idea, and you would be dumb to think otherwise.

First world problems.


And every free weekend always brings in the crowd who think it's dumb. Been having free weekends for a long time now and I don't see that changing.

Free weekends are great! It keeps the game out there and welcomes new blood into the game.
The second we stop getting new blood is the second the game starts growing stagnant.

Again, we want this game to keep growing not the other way around.
So bring on the wee sprouts I say! Maybe a good portion of them will decide to stay! ^^

It's not "free log in weekend" nor has it been referred to as such. It's "free login campaign" and is from Friday the 27th till Monday the 9th. With is a weekend, a week, then a 2nd weekend.

I wish I could have liked this post more than once.

I like the free weekends because I want FFXIV to be successful. I just do not like that SE cannot handle even 500K players with their servers and they want more. And by cannot handle I mean that I have to wait 4 minutes to get to Garuda in full party. -_-

4 million? There are less than 1 million playing now. Closer to launch there was over 2.4 million, but never got over 3 million. Over the past year the playerbase has dropped over half. End of the year 2014 report for SE's MMOs showed a total combined playerbase from all of their online games at under 1 million. So even if you combined the total of all players from all of their online games it totals less than 1 million. Of course that number has increased again due to Gold Saucer, but no telling how much until it's made public.

Responsibility of the players to choose an average full server instead of an extreme full server.
All what the devs can do and currently do is to lock Balmung for new characters

I think it would've been a better idea to do the free weekend a week after this patch since by then the crowds in GS would've died down and there'll be less congestion.

As of now people are still having trouble in getting into GS. It'll turn kinda turn away these potential re-subs if they see that SE cant get something like this straigtened

Gold Saucer should get an extra instance like housing wards to accommodate the surge of players and traffic.

The first day was like a real-life parade or something. People everywhere. Was actually pretty cool, sans the PS4 lag.

I think free login campaign are fine once in while but seems like they having them every month.

This made me realize, we don't have a good "scouter" type head accessory. May I please have a scouter to crush for going over 4 million?

I have to admit as someone who actually hasnt let their sub slip since launch (God bless Mastercard haha) I do wish they'd reward me with some thing other then Veteran Rewards every £25+ (3 months). I mean the free weekends for old paid accounts are nice since it sometimes gets old players to return and allows some of my poorer mates a chance to catch up if their subs slipped, but still I've been here since Beta P3 I'd like a shiney toy please :p
