Why do you play?

I see General Discussion is rife with ideas, complaints, and humor.

But I want to talk about the most important thing. Why do we play the game? What draws us to type in that username, password, and perhaps that token too?

I play because I like the story. It's fun teaming up with a bunch of people to do FATEs. I just like helping out. When people help each other this community is awesome. That's why I stay.

I have more than 1-2 friends that play. Sure, the community has its frequent moments of douchebaggery, but it's better than some other MMOs. *cough* Aion *cough* I really enjoy playing the game, and WoW just isn't that fun for me as it used to be.

Story, helping out new people (I really enjoy doing that), playing with friends.

It's just a place where I can get away from life @_@.

There's always something to do in this game. I also have a lot of friends playing it. So I hardly ever get bored.

Everyone I talk to agrees at this point: friends. Game has stagnated with mindless grinds doing rehashed content. I will give SE credit for allowing new players a chance to experience old content with geared players, but at the cost of a veteran's sanity.

I log on and afk while reading forums, just like right now. . .

I play for the opposite reason of most of you folks. I don't really have very many friends at all, and playing this game helps me escape from a very depressing reality. In the game, I am someone who is in a position to help others. I am in a position to be productive and happy and be around people. In real life, well... I won't go into detail, but let's say any friends I have are usually far too busy with their own lives to care about someone like me. So this game is very important to me in that regard.

To have fun & relax

I'm sick a lot, so the game provides me with a variety of entertainment for a low cost that I can do from home and a way to hang out with people from all over the world. :o That and I like video games and FF games especially. ^^

I play because I enjoy being able to team up and help others. I find the gameplay to be a lot of fun and everyone I've met on our server is super nice and friendly.

I also play for all the pretty fashion.

Because it's beautiful. There are a dozen other MMOs that I could play, but none of them would make me catch my breath in wonder half the time. Also, fashion.

I created a community (Free Company, my own static, a big linkshell) so my girlfriend and I could play the game in a happy environment. Happily and very fortunate for us, it worked out blissfully and we play the game almost everyday with people we have strong bonds to. That and the game is fun to me, even though it can get stale once and awhile.

Man these posts are making me smile. Yes the game can get stale so it's always good to mix things up once and a while. I admit I left after 3 months of release because working on Darklight gear seemed like a chore. But I definitely am happy there is more content out there than before.

Playing with friends, story, and the pretty.

I play because this because it is hands down the BEST MMO I have ever played and I have played them all since UO...I didn't play 1.0 so can't comment, but my wife and I are head over heels thrilled with this game, it has plenty for both of us and they keep adding new stuff. We have recruited 5 people so far and will recruit more. Keep up the excellent work and this community is AWESOME!!!!!

Hey you~.
I know how you feel. As the same, in real life I have nearly no friends. Some are just other Furries, but I don't know many at all. I find that playing FFXIV relieves my worry of being alone; I get to play with friends in FF.

However, it doesn't stop the pain. FF is just a place where I can be myself, where as the real world I have to fake mostly everything. Depression kills me everytime, I know the feelin'. Trust me. ;3

This is me anymore. Don't even raid now as I see it as pointless with the way gear is outdated so quickly.

3 main reason Reasons I have not left for another mmo. My Guild, FF Theme, and nothing else on the market that is any better.

That and I am wanting to see if the expansion fixes the anti-guild content design problem the current game has at endgame.

I play because of my boyfriend. :3

And because of nostalgia and because all other MMORPGs fail me.

Similar reasons as have already been posted.

The game is beautiful, the fashion is fun, I have a growing group of friends here, the RP has been engaging, and the fight mechanics are fun and engaging (even if a lot of people can't do them).

I played this game at launch and played the game itself a little too hard at that point and burned myself out. Since coming back I took more time to just bum around, and thanks to being on Balmung, RP keeps things lively too.

I don't even know why I play anymore! If 3.0 wasn't coming soon and I didn't have a static for stuff, I probably would've quit again.

I play because I like FF, video games, and computers. I really dig the story and character customization options.

Though, why THIS mmo? Honestly it's sorta the exact opposite of what everyone else says... While I do have ingame friends and I love to hang out with them, the fact that I can do most everything By Myself is very appealing to me. I don't like much social interaction, even online (weird I know, whatever), so that fact makes me like this game a lot.

Obviously....that of course isn't the popular opinion, but hey.

I play because I love the world. I love logging in, looking around and seeing such amazing things. I also enjoy the story. And, I also love leveling and gearing lol. I just love everything.

I'm that guy that if vr ever comes out like .hack/ or Sao or log and I got stuck in it I'd be happier than a bunny in a lettuce patch.

The only reason I still play is the guy I married in the game... prior to meeting him I was just enjoying the story. Once there was nothing left for me except strictly end game the community started bringing me down with all the negative behavior. I'm on T11 right now and consider myself a fairly good player but I just can't be around certain kinds of people without feeling like crap. But my hubbies been helping me network to meet good mannered people who can still do end-game content so slowly but surely working through the community until I find people I can feel good being around.

Also I found out that Monk is fun as heck. So that is helping my enjoyment as long as I can stay away from certain kinds of people. Stopped using poetics on healer going for monk :3 E'lusana the Fists of Fury!

But I kinda need the immersion this game provides me to escape from reality and the guy I married keeps me immersed in that game despite the negative experiences I've had. When I log on FFXIV, I am E'lusana Celah, when I log off... who am I again? >_>

Yeah this can be perceived as sad and pathetic but oh well. My life is what I want it to be with all of my choices. I still work and pay my own bills and once I'm done suffering through that, Eorzia here I come!

I pretty much love everything about this game - the graphics, the music, the characters, MY character, battle, dungeons, raids...etc.

Plus, I love the Final Fantasy series.

Short answer: because it's fun.

Long answer: Of all the MMOs I've played, this one has the best balance of challenge, graphics, customization, gameplay, story, and style. I'm actually excited for new content updates not just to see WHAT new stuff there is, but WHY.
Most of the MMOs I've played have tried to achieve this balance, but failed.
ESO had the ambition, but not the technology to follow through.
SWTOR had the story, but lacked substance in other areas (including non-cutscene animations)
Champions Online and City of Heroes had the customization, but lacked a coherent design aesthetic (and the former lacked focus. AFAIK it's STILL capped at lvl 40)
STO and NW had pretty much everything FFXIV had, but lacked the soul. Though STO tried enough and succeeded in enough areas that it's in my top 5 MMOs.
EQ1 and EQ2 will always hold special places in my heart, but they sucked at storytelling and their models were stiff and ugly.

I appreciate your sentiment. I think the only barrier, really, is that we're on two different servers. Ah well.

Mainly because of my FC and a few other friends. I adore those knuckle heads. And there's just always something to do.

I definitely like the freedom of choice to play solo or not to. I'm not nutso about gear it's cool bling and all but it'll be there when I get to it. I just like talking to random people and joking around (It's fun messing with the tarus. Though my char gets chased out of town by a hoard of them. Kinda funny to watch)

To watch modern gamers getting worse by the day to re-affirm my decision to not have faith in humanity.

I usually hang out with FC members and suddenly those people didn't play for long time including the leader that makes the system put me into FC leader lol. Then I hangout with FC neighbour and the fun begins. Doing primal together, attending wedding stuff, and giving present to each other when Starlight Celebration and Valentione's Day begins.

Personally I really enjoy crafting (tho the RNG is freakin' horrible) and housing more than raiding. This is why I still play this game until now :)

Because I can be anything I want to be and do anything I want to do. :)

I play for a few reasons many of them the same peoples above to be honest.

For me its a low cost fun escape and a way for me to hang out with some friends who I dont see often due to our iregular work patterns (i work night shift a few nights a week and one of them works early mornings/evenings, so we skype, chat and play).
Also I love FF and as I've gotten older (30 now, yikes!) my availble playtime has gotten less I find this series (FF in general) and maybe one or two others (MGS/maybe new Silent Hill) are the only ones worth my time and money: high production vales, quality none-shoddy product (code, bugs etc) and engaging stories.
On the production notes I love the music and art style of XIV, it hits all the right notes same with fan-boy references/nods.
Finally the community, I'm part of a nice helpful FC, we run content chat and have a laugh, evenn stuck it out through several wipes on Titan HM for one of members Relic weapon (10mins left on clock lol).

This mmo is more into social based mmo's unlike others.
Still beginner in this game but I can feel the differences, I used to be a hardcore PVP player before in my previous mmo.

Because Skyrim got old. And Fallout 4 is never coming.

---because even despite some trying times in this game, I have fun over all, it keeps me entertained and it is the cheapest form of entertainment for the price, and the most readily available at any time of day/week/month or year.

People complain to get things changed about a game they want to keep playing, which is why you see a lot of those. I play because I made great friends here and we have fun in the game everyday.

I've always liked MMOs, but I always felt like I would end up playing alone unless I actually plan things out with friends, and that's no fun.
XIV on the other hand, with FATEs, the Duty Finder, and FC has really made it easier to be social with new people, and that really makes the game so much more enjoyable to me. Besides that, I've always been a Final Fantasy fan, so there's that!

I guess I'm addicted. No other reason why I continue to play.
