New player, a few questions!

Hello all! I bought the game last week, and I'm having a pretty good time (can't wait for chocobos!!)! But I had a few questions if anyone can help. They are mostly CON/THM related, but I wasn't sure if I should put the thread in one of those forums, so I put it here! Anyways...

1) While soloing as CON or THM, would you recommend equipping and using Aegis Boon? I messed around with it, and the heals proc'ed randomly, so I'm just not sure if it's worth using (and taking up 3 points) when on mage classes.

2) I just recently did the first Conjurer-only level 20 quest, and it gave me around 2000 Conjurer Guild Marks. How do I get more of them? Are they just random awards from regional guildleves, or are there more Conjurer quests I can do? I saw I had another one at 30, but are there more before then?

3) For some reason, I'm getting less EXP/Skill points from mobs now that I'm 21. Is this normal? I was fighting some level 28-29 enemies in Coerthas (was exploring - beautiful zone), and I only got 400~xp and 240~SP. Before, when I was fighting mobs 8-9 levels higher than me, I would get 1000~XP and around 500~SP. Am I doing something wrong? :(

4) When my weapon says things like "30% Earth, 35% Ice, 30% Water" - what does this mean? Does that mean those spells do 30% more damage? Or you take 30% less damage from them?

5) As CON, is it worth putting the DoTs like Shock, Frost, etc on while soloing or should I just be spamming my nukes? Currently, what I do is use Profundity + Spiritbind + Blizzard to open with. Then I put on Shock, and use Thunder, then Blizzard again, etc etc. Is there a better way to fight as CON?

If I think of anything more, I'll add. :) I'd be very appreciative of any help! Thanks!

1. Aegis boon is great in general, but I'd put it below things like Cure II, Protect, Shell, Shock Spikes, Stoneskin, and some sort of nuke if you're soloing CON. I'm thinking it just won't proc very often unless you're GLA. Note that when it procs it blocks all of the damage from the attack, so even if it only procs a couple of times over the 20-30s, it's still helpful.

2. As of 1.18, guild marks are tied to the city where the guild is, so you'll get CON guild marks on Gridanian battlecraft leves R20 and up for the time being. Naturally when your CON is R30 or R35 you'll stop getting offered CON marks on R20 leves.

3. I believe you get a substantial boost to SP below R21. The best thing to do now is to either level another class so that you'll be able to solo mobs 10 ranks higher with relative ease, or find people to grind mobs with. Finding a Linkshell if you haven't already, especially if it's a large and active one, can help with the latter.

4. On your weapon I think that determines how the damage from Spirit Dart, Elemental Shroud, and Nature's Fury is expressed, e.g. if you equip a [wood_type_here] Wand of Flames (100% Fire) your regular attacks will do extra damage to enemies that are weak to Fire.

5. They probably aren't worth it against those enemies. The DoTs can be very useful against bosses and NMs, which don't take much damage from nukes unless you've pumped INT quite a bit. I would get THM to 4 or whatever it is and get Blood Rite. Learn the elemental weakness of the mobs you fight through experimentation, and use Nuke -> Nuke II -> Nuke when you learn the tier II nukes at...26, I think. Until you get the tier II nukes, mix in a tier I of another element instead of a tier II in the middle. Use Blood Rite and Profundity when you can, and I recommend using Profundity on the tier I because the cooldown of the tier II is long enough already. My damage routine looks roughly like the following (for Fire):
Blood Rite -> Fire -> Fire II -> Fire -> Profundity -> Fire -> Fire II -> [probably need to heal, throw Elemental Shroud, etc.] -> [repeat]. Obviously it depends greatly on whether you're soloing or in a party, how much damage you're taking, etc. If your fights are lasting long enough, that you're not being slowed down by it, using Spiritbind is a great idea, especially with the increased cost of Cure spells.

2) Oh okay. I haven't done any Level 20 regional guildleves just yet (as I just got over 20 today). Can't wait to buy some of those abilities/traits from the Conjurer guild - especially Fastcast.

3) Gotcha. Right now, I am 21 CON, 16 THM, and the rest are crafting classes (less than 10 atm). And if I remember, I'm Physical Level 17. I think I might mess around with a melee class to try to get my physical level up if that will make leveling my CON easier. =) And yeah, I definitely need to find a linkshell still. :(

4) Ohhh, I understand. Hrm. Do you know of any good websites that show elemental weaknesses for enemy types? I looked around, and the FFXIV wiki only seemed to list weaknesses for SOME monsters, and not others. Although, I suppose I can just test that myself and write it down, lol. :)

5) This has been very helpful - I'll adjust my "rotation" now and drop the DoTs and just focus on using my cooldowns and spells properly. And yeah, right now, my fights typically last over 30 seconds, so Spiritbind has worked very well for me - especially if I'm having to heal myself. Those healing spells cost quite a bit of MP XD.

Regarding my stat allocation when I gain new physical levels, what do you recommend doing while leveling? Right now, I'm pumping a lot into VIT, INT, and MND (generally on a ratio of 4:2:2). I think I need to put more points in PIE, though. When I'm fighting higher level enemies, my spells resist quite often. =( Oh and will my melee classes be super gimped as a result?

Robert's correct that you get a bonus to XP/SP at lower levels. At level 1, they take whatever XP/SP you'd normally get, and multiply that number by 4. That multiple decreases until you hit level 24, at which point you get the normal XP/SP for the mob.

Something else to consider is that different mobs give different base XP/SP. So, for example, if you kill a puk/djigga/coblyn that's the same level as you, you'll get 63 SP. If you kill a raptor/basiliks/ahriman/salamander that's the same level as you, you'll get 150 SP.

If you want to get the maximum XP/SP per mob, you should fight mobs that are 10 levels above you. You get more XP/SP for fighting mobs above your level. But that maxes out at 10 levels above you. So if you kill a raptor that's 10 levels above you, you'll get more XP/SP than if you killed a raptor that's 2 levels above you. But if you kill a raptor that's 20 levels above you, you'll get the same XP/SP as if you killed a raptor that's 10 levels above you.

Finally, you get slightly less XP/SP if you're in a party of 3 or more people. But you kill things so much faster that you end up getting more XP/SP per hour.

Like Robert said, DoTs are great against NMs and high level mobs with high defense. That's because DoTs cause a specific amount of damage per tick regardless of what level the mob is, or what the mob's defense is. So if you have Piety at around 75 and cast Poison II, it's going to do (about) 63 damage per tick to a level 1 mob, and it's going to do 63 damage per tick to an open world NM that's above level 70. That's substantial because every other attack in the game does less damage to higher level mobs. And when you get to open world NMs, a fully buffed melee weapon skill will sometimes do about the same damage as a DoT does every tick.

In my opinion, when you're fighting mobs around your level, nukes seem to do more damage per cast. But when you get to high level NMs and boss fights, DoTs are huuuuuge.

That's really interesting that different mobs of the same level give different EXP/SP. I'll keep that in mind as I level. Now time to find some mobs that are 9-10 levels more than me! ;)

Oh I didn't know that about the DoTs - that they do the same damage regardless of mob level. I can see how that would be really great for higher level NMs and bosses. Knowing that, I'll definitely drop them from my 'rotation' on regular enemies and stick to nukes! =)

Physical levels will be going away soon. But for now, having a physical level higher than your job level makes fights sooo much easier. If your physical level is below your job level, you're physically a little bit weaker than the mobs you're fighting at your level. So it's much, much easier to level jobs below your physical level.

Eorzeapedia has some, but not all. There's another way to figure it out based on the crystals a mob drops. But the easiest way is probably just to try different elemental spells out and see what hits the hardest. :)

I'll probably leave this one to Robert. For mages, the 4 most important are Vit (gives HP), Mind (gives MP and increases potency of heals), Piety (reduces chances of magic attacks being resisted, increases chances that you'll resist magic attacks, and increases damage from DoTs), and Intelligence (increases damage from magic attacks).

I generally try to keep everything relatively balanced because I try to play several classes. I'm a little slanted toward physical attributes because I'm leveling my melee classes. Regardless, you'll probably want to focus on Vit for HP and Mind for MP.

Some people think the attributes are kind of broken. For example, some people think Dex doesn't do much, if anything. And the attributes going to be adjusted pretty severely in the next patch. So we'll see how that turns out.

I'm sorry for asking so many questions, but I have a couple more! XD

1) When I need to have gear repaired, do crafters prefer you do the "Offer (item)" thing and just offer the Dark Matter needed, or would they rather have gil as the payment for repairs? Obviously, this might be dependent on the person, but just curious as to what most people normally do.

2) Is it better to spread my elemental attribute points evenly or focus on one or two? For example, I am currently putting most of my elemental allotment points into Ice and Lightning as I loved those spells (Blizzard/Thunder) in FFXI. But I realize each mob has its own elemental weakness, so... that might not be best. I do use Blizzard/Thunder more than any of the other nukes, though - for now, anyways.

1. I'll do the repair either way, so long as the repair fee exceeds the cost of dark matter at the NPC vendor. I think many would prefer gil, simply because dark matter does drop from gathering and dungeon chests. Some players have a steady source of grades of dark matter from sources other than the NPC vendors, so offering more dark matter doesn't help them as much as gil.

2. Someone may have evidence to the contrary, but I don't think it makes a large difference at the moment. I believe it affects crystal drops from gathering, so you may want to skew it if you need significantly more of a particular element. I keep them all even for now, but balance changes may cause me to adjust them later.

2. I highly recommend using a food guide http://www.ffxivpro.com/forum/topic/...est-d/#1347139 and using your elemental attribute points to acquire a "delicious" bonus to food and help out your stats or MP pool, etc. I suggest this because currently the points have little effect on the strength of elemental spells.

XD At least compared to food in most games where you just use it and get a buff, lol. Having more MP would also be nice, though. Hrm.

It sounds more complicated than it is.

For a best-case scenario, you're going to want to do the following:
- Put points into whatever stats you wish to flesh out your character (but save elements for food)
- This will let you crank up stats, and though you can never get "divine" bonus, you will still get "delicious" using only elements
- Move your elements up as you transition to different foods based on your ranks, but remember the ele stat has to match (on the chart) the rank of the food item not YOUR rank
- The post gives all info you need, food ranks, stats the foods increase, which element to use for which food group, etc, so take some time to have a look and plan out your path for lvling and which foods you intend to use

Just so you have a glimpse into the future:
- As r50 THM I have tons of points in MND and PIE, but my Ice (sweets) element stat is sitting at 60, this allows me to use Tomato Pie and Crowned Cake both with "delicious" bonus. ^_^

Personally, I really don't care. If you don't have the matter then the gil is fine even if it's just to cover the price of the matter. Repairs are so simple that for me to "charge" anyone more then that would be silly. Usually, a "tip" is nice. :p

Hello all, again! =) I had a few questions just now. So I just dinged level 25 CON, and I've done some of the starting quests for each Grand Company. I see there is a new quest called Imperial Devices, and each city has their own one. Does it matter which one of these I do? Does this quest lock me into choosing one of the Grand Companies? And can I say.. choose the Gridania version of the quest and go to the dungeon with people who chose the other nation one and still complete everything?

Imperial Devices is the quest associated with The Thousand Maws of Toto-Rak. You can only have one of the three Imperial Devices quests active at a time (you can't complete all three at once), but once you complete it for say, Gridania, you can go to the Hall of Flames or Maelstrom Command and accept the other versions of it. The same goes for Into The Dark, the quest for the R45 dungeon.

You can't get locked into any of the Grand Companies permanently until additional missions are added in 1.19.

No, you can do these for all three companies, it is not until a later time that we will have to pick which one to join.

Everyone can play together in the dungeon regardless of which companies quest they have (or have completed).

Hello all again! =) Just had another question! I am nearing level 31 (28.5 right now), and looking at some new rings for CON and THM. Which rings would be ideal? MND? INT? PIE? A combination? I assume MND for healing and INT for damage? So maybe I should just buy a couple rings of each type?

Just wondering what some of you mages out there would recommend. =) Thanks!

For now I'm going with Pearl Rings actually. I'd use Black Pearl Rings if they weren't so overpriced. After the patches reveal what the effects of stats on combat are going to be in more detail I'll probably get some INT rings for nukes and/or PIE rings for DoT spells.

Oh okay, cool. I didn't even see those Pearl rings. XD I might pick up 2 of those and 2 MND ones for when I'm healing in a party. Thanks! ^_^

Question about broken gear... So I think I read elsewhere that even if your gear is broken, the stats on them still work? I'm not referring to like defense/attack/acc/etc, I mean like +5 MND or whatever. And someone else said it's pointless to keep repairing rings as the defense/etc gain on those is very minimal, and apparently the actual stats the rings give (+5 MND, etc) still function? Is this true? Also, do those same stats work regardless of your level? Like if I equip those +5 MND rings at lvl 28, will I get the full 5 MND?

Hey all, found my way into the game a few days ago and I'm enjoying it quite a bit so far. However I've also got a question on equipment levels. The forum explanations arent super clear so can we touch on this one more time please? :)
Item level vs class level- regarding weapons and tools: How much of a penalty is there for using an item above your craft rank?
Saw in a bs guide people saying get your birdsbeak asap- much higher success rates when skilling at low levels.

With that in mind I found a dodofeather? Pickaxe for 19k and snapped it up. As well as a steel head knife for leatherworking on the cheap, i.e. 25k or so. Did I screw myself there? Stats were better than the weathered gear I was using...

If I did should I backtrack and try to shoot for one tier above or below my current class rank? I know I'm in for a grind beating because to improve my chosen professions And gear I needed to skill up other professions, etc. No comment on the ash saw handle for my bronze saw!

I'm not looking at min maxing, just ways to improve my game and not inadvertantly gimp myself!

Generally, you'll suffer a pretty severe penalty if you use tools or weapons above your rank. If you're even 1 level below a tool/weapon, you can suffer a 20% penalty to the stats it offers. The farther from the weapon/tool's optimal rank you are, the more severe penalty you suffer. And the tool/weapon will become damaged much more quickly, so you'll have to spend more money on repairs.

There's a simple way to tell if the tool/weapon gives you better stats than the one you've got right now. Open your main menu, and click on "Gear." Then equip the weathered pickaxe, and check your gathering/perception/output stats (they'll show there in the numbers on the left of your screen). Then equip the Plumed Bronze Pickaxe, and check the same stats.

The Plumed Bronze Pickaxe is level 12, and you're currently a level 13 miner. So you should be fine.

But the Steel Round Knife is level 47. You're currently level 10. So I suspect you're going to be severely gimped using that tool until at you're at least level 42+.

I would suggest that you use tools/weapons that are at or below your current level, or at least no more than 1 or 2 levels above you. If you're trying to save money, you might be able to get away with buying a weapon/tool that's a few levels above you, but as a general rule, you're going to be gimped using tools/weapons above your rank. It's not so bad at the lowest levels, because you move through those levels so quickly. But you're not going to perform as well with the tool/weapon above your level until you level up to it.

The penalty isn't as severe for armor as it is for tools/weapons. So if you're going to save money, I'd suggest buying gear that's above your level, rather than tools/weapons.

Random Question: Is it possible to increase the size of the party frames? Kinda like how you can make your HP/MP bars bigger?

Oh good. Sometimes when I'm duoing with a friend, I don't even notice his HP at times because the frames are so small on 1920x1080. I suppose I could move them away from the side so it's more in my view of the monster and such, but I'd rather just make them bigger. XD

I had the same problem when I was still getting used to playing this game starting out/returning after a few months. I just ended up setting up my UI so that the target's HP and the Party HP bars were closer to each other so I can keep an eye on both.

I've been messing around with Archer some and enjoying it in between my leveling of CON and THM. I had a question regarding stats for it, though. Is it better to use Accuracy, DEX, or STR rings? I've been examining archers around town, but the response has been pretty varied. Some use ACC rings, others use all DEX, and others all STR. I guess it could depend on your other gear, but I've also heard that stats (ie: DEX) don't really help that much at the moment (changing in 1.19 I think).

Also, about arrows... For leveling, would you recommend that I keep using the low level arrows or upgrade them as I go along? Like I'm level 17 Archer right now - should I be using those level 17 Obsidian arrows or maybe just stick with either the level 3 or 9 arrows? Will it make a big difference? I'd rather be as cheap as possible while leveling this, but if it will hurt me a lot, I might as well just spend the gil, ya know?

I'd use accuracy rings until 1.19 because like you said, the other stats don't seem to work correctly but Accuracy does.

As for the arrows, upgrade them as you go as long as it's within your budget. On my server arrows are pretty cheap and a single stack will last you for a while, and you should have some money from leveling 2 other classes.

Estellios = smart.

I haven't tested the effects of different kinds of arrows. But I do know some folks who leveled all the way through 50 just by using level 1 arrows. Of course, this was before the changes to the battle system. Because battle is more difficult now, I wouldn't suggest doing that. Still, I doubt you need to always have the best arrows equipped. Just buy the best you can afford and are available at the moment, and you should probably be fine.

I usually equip accuracy rings on all my melee jobs. Being super strong is nice, but it doesn't really do much good if you can't hit the mob. :)

But you should definitely feel free to play around with it and see what you like best.

Personally, I'll be really happy when 1.19 hits and stat allotment is done automatically as I have put 0 points into STR/DEX because I have been focusing on mage classes thus far. And then in 1.20, you can do it by class which will be nice, too. :)

And dang, leveling to 50 using lvl1 arrows, haha. I don't think I'll do that, but I might not upgrade every time a new arrow upgrade comes along.

EDIT: VydarrTyr, earlier in the thread (page 1) you were talking about how DoTs were great for NMs. Do you know how the damage is for the elemental ones like Choke II, Frost II, Burn II, etc? Are they a lot weaker than Poison II or Bio II? Or about the same? Just curious as a friend wanted to try to duo a faction NM at some point, but my THM is only 30, so I don't have access to the tier 2 THM DoTs, but I DO have the elemental tier 2 ones.

I will eventually level THM up to 50 for all those spells, but ya know.

I honestly can't say exactly how much damage the elemental DoTs do. But I imagine it's comparable to Bio/Dia (Poison does more damage than Bio/Dia, but for a shorter duration). The fastest I've heard of anyone killing Old Six Arms -- a mid-level NM with a ton of defense and HP -- is 2 minutes, and that was done by a Conj using only elemental DoTs.

So I'd definitely suggest using them on NMs. :)

Oh very cool. :) I wish the your log said the damage of your dots. :( Or maybe there's an option for that, I haven't looked yet. XD

That chart is a little confusing. Does this mean that having 151 PIE is the same effect as having 160 PIE? Because it lists the DoT dmg as being the same for a span of 10 PIE pts. If this is true, I can make some slight mods to my stats to increase effectiveness even further. Not that it will matter much since it's all auto as of 1.19 in a couple weeks haha.

Yes, its a 10% midifier, just like all the heals. Meaning for every 10 points you add to piety, 1 point of damage every 3 seconds is gained on dots. As well, 1 point in healing with mnd ( I have noticed most modifyiers in this game are 10% ). Basically if it takes 10 points of piety to add 1 point of damage then it takes 10...not 9.

Except Bio debuffs a mobs damage output and Dia debuffs a mobs defence. Raising there value exponentially in my book, depending on the mob.

As well, 1 point in healing with mnd ( I have noticed most modifyiers in this game are 10% ). Basically if it takes 10 points of piety to add 1 point of damage then it takes 10...not 9.

Nevermind. That doesn't answer my question, I guess I didn't phrase it properly. I checked the details on the list before the chart and found what I was looking for.
