I have caught every fish in this game except 1. I have spent months working on this task. I have gotten my ironworks rod, and my lucis rod. I have spent over 2 months on this one fish and it is becoming a frustrating nightmare. I've dealt with bad RNG and have felt the frustration of these hard to catch fish. But Helicoprion is a whole other beast. Not because the fish is hard to catch, but because the weather requirements are so rare, it makes finding a window to attempt this insane.
I know many have it, and great for you, you were lucky, and maybe this is my white whale. However when I'm on 8+ hours a day after work and still am lucky to see a window once a week, I think there is something wrong. How is anyone with less of a play schedule supposed to be able to get this thing without insane luck? This a quest fish and it is one of if not the hardest fish in the game. When I'm sitting in a line of 7-10 people all saying they have been trying for 1-2+ months like I have, I feel like it needs to be toned down just a bit.

02-12-2015, 10:56 AMEnkidohI have - its commonly found in Southern Thanalan, and has a reddish-orange weather icon on the minimap (it also gives an environmental effect in the zone in the form of shimmering heat haze that makes everything just look blistering hot.) Have to pay attention to the skywatchers or monitor weather tracking sites.
I don't have many big fishes under my belt (as lucis came out while I was just starting to fish for ironworks), but always keeping tabs on weather tracking sites is definitely the way to go for big fishes for their insane requirements. -

It probably helps you if you know that Clouds (Overcast) works as well for the prior weather transition into Heat Waves. It's NOT limited to Fog -> Heat Waves. The combination is more common than some people may think.

Don't feel bad, I've been trying unsuccessfully to catch a canavan for four months or whatever it is at this point. I'm going to bypass the IW rod at this rate, since I only need to haul up six more clams for the Lucis rod.

Helicoprion is not just overcast/fog to heatwave, which would be bad enough. It's overcast/fog to heatwave, but only between 8am and 8pm, which is so rare of a confluence of events that you're lucky to see the window happen once only every other day or so. I caught mine a long time ago, but it was puny and I've been trying to catch a 200-ilm+ one ever since. In the two months since I caught my first one I have only ever been able to snag one other...which was also puny. :/

Shonisaurus is way more forgiving in terms of available times to even attempt going for it, because it has no time window, only 2x weather combo requirement.
Helicoprion is imo a lot worse even considering the fact it's only a single mooch, because when the weather combo occurs determines how much time you actually get to try for it. Heat wave from 4pm-midnight? You only get a half window. Heat wave from midnight-8am? Too bad, come back another day!
For me, the weather combo for Shoni was also a lot more common than Heli, although I'm willing to believe that their likelihood is probably similar. -

11 days later and still no luck on this fish. I'm not even going to be happy when i catch it. Just less annoyed. Fishing doesn't feel rewarding at all and I really feel like this fish is broken. Others are rare, and have rare conditions, but this one has way too much stacked against the player. How many stars in different galaxies need to align for me to finish this damn quest?

I still haven't even seen a Mahar after about six windows, nevermind caught an HQ one.Quote:
