The interesting boiling point

I find it interesting when I join a dungeon and there's a dead thickness in silence even after the first hellos. If someone claims they are new, one or two people, usually me or some other kind fellow or lass will offer their advice once they get to the boss.


But then after a few wipes and that one other individual who was deadly silent the whole dunegon - suddenly goes into a crazy madman mode.

Frustration, resentment, calling names, and now suddenly they are offering advice on how to do the fight. While their finger, I imagine, must be now hovering over the vote to kick or abandon dungeon.


I just find this particularly amusing. If this person was going to get mad - why not offer the advice sooner than waiting for the frustration to hit. The cracking of the keyboard keys I assume gives them a rush. I always approach the person with this and I get cursed out or belittled for catering to babies. [The new folks]

I just don't understand how people can get frustrated at the situation when they didn't lift a hand when they read over, "I'm new," in their chat log. It would be awesome if there weren't any wipes, and occasionally some people watch the "video."

I just don't think the boiling point should ever happen, unless you made the attempts to help before the engagement and that person refused to co-operate.

Perhaps I'm just being sentimental, after all I was new too at some point. Especially since the patch for the new dungeons just came out... lol

I've only been seeing this kind of scenario.

Me: Hey, just letting you guys know this is my first time.
Everyone else: *silence*
*enemies are pulled*
*wipe*
Agitated people: Really guys? Why didn't anyone... *insert late advice here*
Me: Was I typing IN ANCIENT EGYPTIAN?

I am the silent type but that is because I play on PS4 and don't always want a keyboard in my lap. I let others give advice since someone is always faster to the keyboard or I am not the tank and it is the tanks job (leader and all that jazz). Unless I can only add on will I get out the keyboard but it is never out of frustration.

Don't get me wrong there are rude people but typing with a PS4 controller is clunky.

Iearned how to type as a healer cuz we can get away with it.
Typin on ps3 controller is tough if ur not used to it. I have gotten used to it so i\\'m not too slow and can type even in intensive movement fights like t5 or titan.
On topic tho ppl r probably silent cuz
- they r just wanting to get it done
( quick clean run )
- they can\\'t speak ur language
( won\\'t use auto translate )
- they are talking to other ppl
( Ls or FC chat )
- they just don\\'t want to in general

Being new in this game gets u skewered but being new to ur job in a high level instance that requires u to know how to play ur role is another story.
* tank runs sastasha hm, wears high allagan gear and wep. But doesn\\\\'t know how to tank simple mobs efficiently. I call them out and what do you know, its a dps who rolled tank with loot they got from farming.
Technically the only time i chat is when funny stuff happens in the run, when learnig boss mechanics/ helping ppl or just for the hello and gj at the end. Also the exception of calling out ppl who don\\\\'t know how to do their job ( the painful days of pharos pre nerf where tanks would derp and dps would be low ) = possible healers rage quitting = me joining in progress :3

Maybe you should be more specific? I've been in a fight the first time but already knew the mechanics from videos or reddit. Just because it's someone's first time doesn't mean they don't know how the fight works. You see it all the time in primals.

Actually any concerned individual should next ask "Do you know the fight". Sorry but if someone says I am new then I assume they don't know squat.

I often raise my brows at how antisocial many people seem to be in what is, by design, a pretty social game. It's unnerving to me.

In middle of fights and running between parts it is very understandable people are not chatting about the weather or random stuff to fill the silence.

Personally I am okay with just saying hello to people at the start to create a more friendly atmosphere for the run then only talking when see someone making some major mistakes (be very polite and explain the mechanics of the part where people are messing up on, not making the other player the target of negativity but instead helping them better understand the fight) or explaining fight before each boss battle begins if someone said they were new to the place.

Other than saying hello at start and explaining fight if someone says they new I tend to be quiet and see nothing wrong with that during a run given in most cases your in DF so it's cross-world gathering of players who you might not see again in which case bonding with them long term seems pointless.

Not everyone watches video's.... i never watched any because that would spoil the fun, and personally learning from wipes is the best part.

You do know there are mechanics other roles have to deal with that the tank never does? So leaving it solely for the tank to explain is not always a good option.

No offense, but if the tank doesnt know what the DPs have to fight with, he shouldnt really go into the specific dungeon/raid.
Im Maining Pld, and im always tanking my CT, ST, WoD whatever. Since im the one with the highes equip (usually) im the MT. Still, i know all the mechanics, and nearly every run im the one explaining the mechanics in the /a chat to all the firsttimers.

If, f.e. i die as a Main tank, and another tanks needs to tank, im more or less a dps in that fight. And i should really know what i ahve to do in that case, dont you think?

I assume the people you're talking about OP are the antisocial, basement dwellers who have no real social skills and play the game more than they live their own lives outside it.

Don't hate them, feel sorry for them. They just need a hug.. so /hug them next time. :D

Sure, this would be all well and good in full parties, but in dungeons, there are no other tanks. And battles look quite different depending on whether you're a tank, a melee dps, or a ranged dps. If a tank doesn't know everything about the fight, it at least gets the ball rolling for more social people to speak up and fill in the gaps that the tank left out for whatever reason.

Well, yes, dungeons dont have other tanks. Still, from my point of view, a tank should know the mechanics. All of them. But, thats maybe just me.

I'd argue the same for healers because they have to heal through failed mechanics.

As a DPS the only mechanics I concern myself with are the ones that would affect me. The tank only needs to know the ones that affect them in my opinion, they should be concentrating on what they need to do and not whatever us DPS do which is a distraction they do not need. A healer is a more complex issue, since they have to be more concerned over what both parties are up to but a tank has no need to know what a DPS is required to do unless they choose to take that additional information on board personally as their choice.

That choice however to do so in my opinion compromises their concentration and they should focus on their job and not worry about ours so much. If we pull a mob off you by mistake by all means take it back and tell us to control our enmity better but just concentrate on your own mechanics and job, worry less about ours. If someone is new and they are a DPS, more often than not one of the other DPS will inform them of the mechanics that they need to know so a tank doesn't need to worry about that unless they want to learn it additionally, my point though is it is not required of a tank to know the mechanics that the DPS need to worry about.

The problem is not that people are new, the problem is when they are terrible (and happen to be new).

Plenty of good new players who don't have any problems.

I didn't mean the tank had enmity problems. I meant in a way of they are new, we offered advice, but he/she still dies to some mechanics, apologizes then you have that one person that was silent go apeshit donkey balls on the poor guy. I assume if they didn't have patience to die in a duty finder roulette after mustering the courage to wait 60+ minutes for one then they obviously might need to go look into an FC.

I only say this as I was in a PT where the tank in "the lake?" new dungeon/ w/e. Was doing fine through the whole dungeon but tank turned the dragon on us while we were activating and disrupted us - we wiped - then the blackmage just exploded. Telling him he's never seen such a horrible tank, if he was on his tank he'd show him his giant epeen and should know never to turn adds towards the party etc etc. Meanwhile this person was quiet the whole dungeon.

I just find it funny how people can have these little spurts and yet somehow manage to keep calm until the last boss. etc.

When some one is new I always ask if they know what to do in said instance. If yes, then good. But I still ask on all bosses. If no, then I do a quick, important, run down on what to expect then explain things as they come.

If I am new I usually let people know I've read up on it and watched a video (Mizzteq is the best) so I'll do my best based on what I know.

Players who explode just think their time is worth more than yours, and think they are the best players ever and they can do it better than you. Its sad more than anything, that they live such a lonely and delusional life.

Having a keyboard for your Playstation is a godsend.

The thing is I could only explain so much. I don't really pay attention to what the Tank should be doing on the fight but now after this I am watching everything because I feel like this was a big eye-opener. I feel like tanks get too cranky. lol

Haha, someone got a little sensitive. Thanks for being overdramatic and assuming words and faults.

There are mechanics in every fight that every role should be aware of. A dps and healers should know why the tanks have to swap. The tanks should be aware of the mechanics that dps have to deal with. I believe every tank should take a dps and healer through Titan. A tank yelling "Why can't you guys dodge" to new people in Titan, just means he most likely can't empathize or is to elitist.

To say to someone it doesn't effect my role so I don't need to know is honestly selfish.

BTW Lets get some more anger in here. Obviously my tank statement offended half the people in this post.

I don't find your statement wrong, just a bit misguided. It IS nice for a role in any dungeon, raid or instance, to know what the other roles have to deal with. It allows the healer know what heals should they prepare to do next for certain situations, it allows the DPS to know where they should be mitigating most of their damage, and it allows the tanks to know who to pull enmity from.That information most times isn't necessary to have on your mind as a single role, but it truly helps, and it can make or break the difference between a team that can finish a dungeon in 30 minutes, between a team that needs the entire dungeon time to get it done.

It is also nice to know what all classes and jobs are capable of because you can immediately figure out which of the moves of your current class/job can catalyze with the move your party member used, thereby increasing damage, healing efficiency, etc. but once again that info is a plus, and isn't a necessity. (I try to know as much as possible and learn things as I go along)

It's not necessary, but it'll help you get the job done more efficiently.

Or the ask the healer why they get so upset when I run off without buffs. Because you know.... it makes everyone breathe a tad bit easier if I have stoneskin when I am speed running or doing a large pull. Why? because 2 seconds can make a difference.

That said, "I'm new" shouldn't be a license to play like a jackass.

I hate it when first time encounters, outside of the Coil, are spoiled for me, but that's generally because I'm quick enough to pick up on mechanics and figure out what each role needs to deal with individually. That being said, if someone says they are new, then I'll ask if they want spoilers or not, and if not, I'll answer any questions they may have once the last boss is dealt with.

A Scholar at WoD made me laugh this week, after a lot of people got OSK'd by the first boss (which I think was designed to weed out the rage quitters early on) they started shouting in Alliance chat- "Have you people not done this before?". Hmm well since its been out less than a week and half the alliance got OSK'd, I'd venture to guess that Yes, many of them actually hadn't done that one before.
