Skipping cutscenes even in solo quests?

So I started to level up ALC again and read through the cutscene dialogue. It was pretty interesting to see the lore on how Potions of Dexterity and Intelligence are made and it was a bit funny to see an NPC use said potions to win this fighter's heart. I was explaining the scenes to my FC and they laughed at how I actually watched the cutscene instead of skipping it.

I mean, I know people skip cutscenes in dungeons/raids to save time and the time of others, but why skip cutscenes for solo quests? I know the writing isn't one for the history books, but it seems a bit silly to skip every scene and just jump right into the grind without knowing why you do the things you do in the game. Maybe I am getting old and wistfully think back to the days when people got engaged with the story an RPG game had to offer.

Some people play the game just to get the shiny stuff, the achievement points. They want to spend the least amount of time in it, getting the most virtual achievement from it for instant gratification.

"Good things deserve time. Sometimes the time spent itself is where the gratification come from." This is a lost concept among today's busy society.

I always watch cutscenes. Even if I'm in a raid with people who just want to blow through it. It's part of the experience for me to see the story unfold as I play the content... you know, like one of the old Final Fantasy titles.

The mini storylines were actually one of the main reasons I leveled classes/jobs beyond White Mage and its cross class skills. For thaumaturge in particular, I had to keep going to 30 after I got swiftcast to see how the story of the brothers ended. I also thought some of the other stories and characters were pretty funny, and looked forward to seeing what they were up to every 5 levels.

Of course, being able to self-repair and understanding the basics of the other jobs was also reward enough by itself. I guess some people see it that way only and shrug their shoulders at the in-game plots.

I skip dungeon cutscenes and watch them later because I've come to feel rude for not doing so, but I will never understand people who totally ignore the story in games. I had a friend quote someone else once, saying "Story is pointless. If we were here for a story, we'd be watching a movie." uh...yeah, no. I personally like feeling like I'm immersed somewhere instead of having my eyes glued to someone else's story.

But FFXIV has such great stories, from the main story to the class quests, and there's just so much lore and interesting information...I just can't believe there's people who ignore all of that because they just want to kill stuff.

I personally always watch the cutscenes/read the text the first time I encounter it anywhere in the game.

Tam Tara Spoiler…

A prime point, is in Tam-Tara Deepcroft HM - I read all the bloody parchments, as it gave you an insight into the degeneration of Edda, and why she was there. I feel that if you didn't read those, the experience would be lessened. Not only that, but skipping the end cutscene with evil Edda… well, people would be missing out!

I play the game for the story and experience, rather than to get the best equipment, or clear a dungeon/raid first.

Sounds like your FC is full of people who should be playing an MMO without much story, like Ragnarok Online or something like that. They shouldn't be playing FFXIV if they want to skip the story, the story is the big draw.

I've never skipped cut scenes unless I was in a dungeon (not to be rude to other players) or queue popped while I was in the middle of one (DPS, I don't mind the wait, but I don't want to sit through it again either).

I have skipped through listening to the voice over sometimes when I was able to just read it faster (not always but sometimes)

I often wonder why people would, when a big complaint is often the lack of such scenes in other MMOs or of a story.

They're not bad people at all, but after that little stint in the chat, it left me scratching my head. Most of them (there's only like 6 of us active out of 20) had played FF11 previously and now I wonder if they skipped everything there as well.

There's really no reason to rush anything in this game unless the timer is about to run out. As my mom always said, "people are in a rush to get to nowhere".

I never try and skip cutscenes unless it's the final 2 main storyline missions because I'm a guy of lore and skipping that would be a disservice to me.

The story lines in FFXIV are a huge part of content as well as the experience the game has to offer. I always encourage people to read the quests and watch the cut scenes. People who skip them are missing out imo.

That being said, what bothers me is that those people who skip cut scenes/storyline/etc will actively look down on and even ridicule others for wanting to enjoy that part of the game.
That's just not right. =\

People have fun in different ways. I like story as much as the next guy but I've found myself skipping more than the occasional cutscene when my eyes cant roll any further in the back of my head.

I couldn't help but think "Enterprise...engage!" was a Star Trek easter egg! Why would I want to miss things like that?! Though I'm not sure if it was meant to be. It felt like it though!

I used to read stories and watch cutscenes, since most of the story isnt to my liking (they are horrendous, flawed, and absurd full of pop culture reference joke).. 2.3 was the last time i followed the story.. I gave up reading em, much to my believe that most of games' stories are purely stupid..
**points out at classic rpg where you see 2 or 3 other characters follow the protagonist everywhere like mad..

This was one of the best bits so far. One of our team members was getting the chills since he was the only male character in the group at the time. Come to think of it we should have egged him on a bit that we're not getting the same message. Hmm here's a hint SE... if you do put more such elements in... make it so that the messages are asymetrical between the party members - be it that just one person gets a different set or that each gets a different set depending on the story. Would be sooo fun.

Having leveled several different characters to 50, and made sure to have watched all cutscenes the first time 'round like a good boy, the ability to skip cutscenes is a godsend for me. I'm not really taken with the main scenario, and I don't feel a need to re-watch anything. Some of the side quests (like Edda and co. mentioned above) did stand out, but as with any other RPG the main draw for me is combat.

Oh, and of course the people i meet along the way. We can make our own stories, ya know?

I don't skip cut screen, interest in lore or not

probably seen a couple of cs ever since i played, i would rather hit things with my shiny axe

If someone isn't interested in a narrative and more interested in a game, then that's fine. How they wish to enjoy it isn't for me to say. But if someone would laugh at me for enjoying the story, the lore, and the ongoing content of the changing world, I'd laugh right back at them for not doing so.

People have forgotten that an mmo... is about the journey, not the destination. It's never been about the lvl cap or the best gear. It's about the joy, anger, and sadness you felt getting there. How many of our best stories come not from the so called 'endgame' but from when were still new to the world or even new to the class?

I started playing FF11 back in early 2006 back when you could still expect to take a year to see lvl 75. I never did see lvl 75 either but I had fun. I enjoyed my time there and only left because my friends had moved on and I had no one else around. I've tried going back but now it's more like modern mmo's where everyone's worried about the destination and how fast they can get there.

When you actively level up 8+ characters, just sometimes skipping them comes in handy for the last 4 or so people ;P Seeing the same thing over and over and over can get old, especially if you consider the character an 'alt' or 'mule'. I only really watch them on my main 3 characters (to get screenshots)

Sometimes some of the quests get a little dull and repetitive. Especially the crafting ones. There's only so many times you can be told you made something awesome before it gets stale.
The ENDING cutscenes, though...a lot of those are cool.

I started around 2007, and it was still like that. It took forever to level up that it felt like an accomplishment. Then, the sadness would set in when you lost a level from losing experience by dying. D:

Haha. Was a great game. I only wish crafting was as intuitive there, as it is in Final Fantasy XIV. :D

The only cut scenes I ever watched were the intro cut scene (not at the start of the game, I made coffee for that one - I'm talking about the one with derplander and Louisaux), and the cut scene after you beat T12. Those are the only ones I haven't gotten bored with in less than 5 seconds. Oh at the end of ST was pretty cool.

Other than that....I couldn't justify doubling the time it takes me to do the quests in this game by reading chat bubbles, I have a very limited amount of time as it is. It's hard for me to identify with my character being the chosen one when I know that BlueGartr and Lucrezia already took care of all of this shit weeks ago, so the NPCs are just humoring me.

I hope you didn't begin the Hildibrand story, yet. Skipping Hildibrand CS would be a crime.

Finished it. Skipped them all.

I totally get that people like the cut scenes. Final Fantasy 7 and 8 changed my perspective on how a story could be told and what a video game can mean to someone. I just am not that engaged in this story because its an MMO. I really like the game play and (most importantly) the fact that I can play it on my PS4, but the story: don't care.

I try not to, but even I fall into cutscene burnout. This game has (sometimes lengthy) cutscenes, dialogue and story sequences for everything, trivial or otherwise. Eventually, you just want to get something done.

Could be worse. We could have scenes like Metal Gear Solid where it requires a bathroom break.

Anyway, My main gripe was about skipping scenes in general, not about watching them multiple times if you use different characters. In my case, I was experiencing the cutscenes for the Alchemist class for the first time, so I found it extremely odd that my mates said I should have skipped them. I wouldn't gain any insight to the lore if I skipped everything on the first time.

You missed the funniest moments in the entire game. THE ENTIRE GAME.

Yeah... I watched Arrested Development while I was skipping the cut scenes so I think I came out ahead.

I don't skip solo cut scenes, but man do I skip all that quest text! Gawd, someone likes to type! I try to find some actual quest info in all that gabbing and move on.

I'm shocked

I personally find the story in the game really lacking. This is coming from a t13 clearer. I skip the cutscenes because I find the story incredibly predictable and for the most part, cheesy. I just really like raiding and the gameplay.

As with any RPG I play, I always see the storyline bits as the main reward of the game. Completing the objectives of a quest earns you the chance to see the quest completion and find out what happens for the followup quest if there is one. Each time you earn five levels you're rewarded by the chance to see the next chapter of your class's or job's storyline. Advancing through a lengthy quest chain is rewarded by that story building to its climax.

To skip dialog, or worse yet cutscenes, is like putting effort into working for something and then never bothering to take what you were working for. I'd sooner run raids just to throw away all the loot.

Of course, on repeatable content, this only fully applies the first time through. On subsequent runs through the same thing, I'll only watch if it were particularly good or if it's been a while since I last saw it. But that's only because the dialog or cutscenes are no longer advancing the story at that point, once I've already seen them too often.

Stop skipping cutscenes! The game's story telling has improved dramatically since the original 2.0 story, and it only gets better with each patch. Alliances are changing, hypocrisy is being outed, villains may not be so villainous, and we may not quite be the heroes of light the NPCs make us out to be. The story has honestly gotten pretty intriguing.
