Just finished my two week trial and I like the game and want to get it. Am I required to purchase the full game for $40 out of the PSN store or can I just start a sub for $15? Bit confused, anyone able to enlighten me? Thanks!

You'll need a software license. One way to get it is by paying $40 on the PS store. I would certainly shop around though; Amazon has the game w/ 30 days for $34.
You'll need to start by purchasing the game. (Shop around, as radioactive_lego mentioned, but make sure you get the PS4 version if that's the platform you want to play on. The PC version won't let you play on PS4 and vice-versa. If you want to play from multiple types of systems, then you'd have to purchase it for each.) Purchase of the game does include 30 days of gametime. After that, you'll need to extend that subscription for between $10 and $15 per month. (The price varies according to which subscription type you choose and whether you buy one month or several months at a time).
Thanks for the information. I have one further question. If I purchase the game now will I also need to pay for the expansion Heavensward? Or should I wait to purchase when the two will likely be bundled together? Or am I completely wrong and I just have to buy the base game and the expansion will come free as long as I sub?
The Heavensward expansion doesn't come free with the subscription (though patches between expansions do). I don't know yet whether there will be a bundled option offered where you can buy the basic FFXIV:ARR game and its Heavensward expansion together or whether you'd still need to buy each separately. Some games offer deals like that and some don't.
So I could purchase the game today and then next month when the expansion is released need to purchase a completely separate product for another $40 on top the subscription fee? That doesn't make much sense to me. Not sure I want to go down that route and may just end up waiting on seeing in a month or two when the expansion is released if there are no details available. Sucks because the game is lots of fun but I don't want to be dishing out $40 only to turn around and have to buy the expansion a month later for another $40...*sigh*
To be honest, we don't know the exact pricing of the expansion, although is safe to assume we will have to buy it and $40 is a reasonable estimate.
If you're still on the fence about the game, i would hold off. There is a patch coming out with a new 24-man dungeon and items so there should be an upsurge of players then, but they will mostly be veterans.
The expansion and base game will likely be packaged together, and you can buy the game then. You'll have a lot of new players who will join for that (and veterans playing new classes starting from lv.1), which will help your queue times and let you meet more players for fates and the all-important social network/guild for mmos. The community in general is very good in this game (although you will still meet trolls and the like).
When does the next expansion release anyways? Been searching online and there is no concrete date. Just spring 2015 which encompasses a number of months. If it doesn't release for a couple of months I can see dropping the money now but if it's going to be in a month I'm probably going to want to wait.
No one knows the exact date of expansion, but most ppl believe it's on May or June.
It really depends on how much you play and how you play (for example I read everything but a friend of mine skips all quest text). I would estimate about 40 hours of play time give or take to get your first class to 50, but that could vary wildly based on role and what you concentrate on. I think it probably takes another few days at least to unlock and run all of the post 50 dungeons and to start gearing up. Shouldn't really take too much time from there to be able to enter at least old raids and soon FCoB (Final Coil of Bahamut -- current raid) if you're so inclined.
Also, I can almost guarantee that Heavensward will not be out within 3 months. Usual patch cycles are 3 months and the final 2.X patch is later this month, though it's a bit unusual itself in that they're splitting the story between it and subsequent minor patches, so if anything it might be longer than 3 months.
It depends on how single-mindedly you focus on that as being a goal. If you restrict yourself to only a single job, race through the quests while skipping their stories, and focus just on leveling up as fast as you can, it's possible to hit 50 within a couple weeks.
On the other hand, if you explore the world, talk to every NPC you can, try out all the different classes, and take your time enjoying the stories, well, that's the way I treat the game and it took just over a year to get my first 50. (Oh, I also divide my attention between multiple characters to some extent, although Y'kayah has sort of become my main. And, although for the first 7 or 8 months the game was out I was playing several hours every day, it eventually trailed off to a more casual schedule. Now I only play maybe a couple times a week on average.)
Really anywhere within that 2 weeks to a year range is pretty reasonable. It all depends on how you play.
Thanks everyone! Just picked up the game last night and am having a blast! Cya all out there!
You'd likely be waiting a year or so for the game to be bundled together.
What I'd suggest is buy the base game now, and look at purchasing the expansion only after you have gotten through all of the A Realm Reborn content. There's quite a lot of it there, so you're not likely to burn through it all quickly unless you're a hardcore player.
