Why is Yoshi-P so loved for a head dev?

No head dev I know from any MMO is loved or liked yet this guy is BEYOND loved. :confused:

Women want to be his gf/wife.

Straight men are willing to go gay for him.

WHAT makes this guy SO great compare to any other dev from any MMO?

Probably because he doesn't love a childrens cartoon that revolves around ponies.

Unlike the previous one, he listens to the players.

I think part of it is he listens to the players.
he also actually plays the game. knowing this helps the us the players feel more like he is one of us.
quite a lot of directors and developers do not play the game they worked hard on and it shows.
and you can tell he has a good sense of humor making him rather likeable.

he polished a turd and then made a better one with that same nutty goodness.

anyone that jumps onto a sinking ship and saves it should be loved.

He tries his best to listen and relate to players concerns. He seems very easy to talk to from what I saw in the fan fest videos (even if his English isn't great). He just looks like a fun person to hang around.

This is pretty much my feeling on the matter. While i haven't had the honor of talking directly to him, his very open and often humorous appearances tend to endear him to a lot.
That and he very clearly plays the game hes directing, and thus clearly sees the flaws in his own game. That lets him take our concerns on board in such a way that we feel like we're actually being listened to.

That makes a very big impact on a lot of people.
He's also very communicative. lol

He's like the only gave developer I know. Others I can think off are maybe Sid Meier, cause his name is on the box of the Civ games I play a lot of, but I don't even know what he looks like, just his name. I can also think of Dustin Browder from Starcraft 2, but I don't really think he's "loved". I pretty much just know him from old memes involving destructible rocks. I don't even know the makers of any of the other games I play, like Fallout or CoD.

Yoshi-P puts himself in front of the crowd, does the talking, wears cool clothes, and does things people like to the game, like putting in Gold Saucer. And the game is only going up under his wing. Not to mention he also plays the game. That's probably why he is loved.

He brought this game back to life. He refused to adopt a f2p standard that always ensues after a MMORPG failure. World first and only so far for an MMORPG?

He does a good job. And every FF6 reference is a great reference. If he continues like this he has the potential to become a icon as Miyamoto or Koyima.

I like Yoshida due to how "one of us" and down to earth the guy is. He genuinly has a passion to make the game as true to the FF fans out there and a game he can be proud of instead of what I feel what Blizzard is doing lately, which is how can we milk as much money outta this franchise with the least amount of effort.
With the amount of very poor videogame releases lately, AC Unity, Masterchief Collection, WatchDogs, its very hard to have faith and trust in a developer/producer, but with the whole relaunch/build of FFXIV ARR, he has proven more than enough that what Yoshida says and does is to have faith and trust in.

With the way SE officially apologized, remade the game brilliantly, listens to their community (as much as possible, as face it, we the players usually dont know what we want ;). This FFXIV relaunch just made me respect SE and Yoshida as a developer/producer.

I want to have his babies.

he took 1.0, arguably one of the worst AAA MMOs ever created and turned it into one of the most successful subscription games ever released. That's pretty impressive.

Plus he likes Dark Age of Camelot.

Unlike other developers and producers, with Yoshida it feels like he is one of us.

He pretty much listens. Some girl asked for spriggan hats during a fanfest, and not even a few days later they were there.

I guess its the history behind.
In first Live Letters he was shy and even said he is not used to it and its new...
Later on they become brave and tried some jokes (wada helped a lot)...
Now they are even doing live shows and as you see in fan fest he likes what he does...
With the add of Forums and "Letters from the Producer" he showed presence...
He did not try to hide and also said sorry for what they did wrong...
But one of the main reasons i think is his forum activity, if you read in JP forum...

He has a strong work ethic and I respect that. This is just going by what a lot of his devs and community team members say about him.

The personality he projects is friendly, outgoing, and very easy to relate to. He's the first developer I've seen (other than some on the Bungie staff) who really puts himself out there for people to see, and that helps put a human face and personality to the development team. Something about that just makes you feel more comfortable buying a product from him, and going back for more.

I was just thinking that I've never seen a community more protective of their leader than the FFXIV crowd. Downside of this is you cannot critic the game in any way or the wrath of all these fans will come down on you like a ton of hammers, making an honest discussion of game issues almost impossible.

He had me sold when he showed how much he hated the old Stoneskin as much as us.

"NEXT!.....NEXT!"

He seems like a nice guy, that goes a long way for something so simple^^

Why do people keep blaming Tanaka for the 1.0 failure? They MADE him release the game unfinished and almost unplayable. He did his best to salvage the game....

But Yoshi-P. What's not to love. Just seeing him in the live letters makes me smile... HAI

I just wish Yoshi would replace his Gathering lead designer. Dude doesn't know what he's doing with fishing.

Fantasy Life? Now that's some fishing.

I thought CoH had devs people loved, but I'd say when a game has a dev who looks like they enjoy what they do and the game they're making, players will start rallying about them.

Yoshida is very good at creating the illusion of communication with the playerbase. To the point where a lot of people are convinced their input actually matters in the development of this game. He's a very good business man if anything.

Well someone's in a bad mood today.

Most of the people I talk to about it say they love the interaction he has with players, he's logged in with players..I don't know many other games where people have live letters like he does. Me personally, I think I know this guy better than any other MMO I've played.

He also lets you know why the way things are, you may not like the answer and it may not come right away but he lets you know for the most part. Some I see they demand a response.

The devs themselves, to me, are amazing and very responsive. I am very happy and thankful that we have Yoshi, Foxclon, Grekumah, Bayohne, Fernehalwes and everyone else. All loved in my book.

He's helped me find peach on so many levels.

I agree with what others above have said. To us fans, he's like a rock star. A random fan came up to him on the street during the Vegas fan fest and asked if he'd do the Manderville with him. And he did it! Things like that are cool!

He means well, he does his best to listen to what people say, he's open/honest about how he feels about things (how many game developers have openly said "Sorry, our game is really terrible, we'll see if we can rework it from scratch for you guys?" The only thing I don't like about him is that he's big on defending game-related decisions that are out of his control (cash shop (made by marketing), housing decisions (made by the hardware team), etc).

My biggest problems with dev to player communication are actually with the NA localization team. I don't like some of their translations. The housing mess was especially amplified by mistranslations causing miscommunication about what Yoshida actually said (the people who are quoting him in their sigs - you do know that's not him speaking, as he doesn't speak English well, but translations of things he said, right?), and the Eternal Bond mess where some players permanently lost game items they paid cash for was caused by mistranslations of the Eternal Bond website (which are still there...) giving wrong impressions.

For what he is in control of, he does a great job. Not everyone working on FFXIV:ARR is amazing, but Yoshida's work seems pretty solid. I mean, you can blame him for everything his team does, especially when he backs them up (like any good project lead should, imo), but that's rather disingenuous.

Sure. First lets look at other big names at Square Enix:

1) Tetsyua Nomura...is a visual director, a character designer. And his stories are absolutely dreadful. I liked him alot more when he was just a character designer, now he's directing games, and none of them are getting released. Also, the cast of XV looks hilarious.

2) Motomu Toriyama...well, apparently he's a great event director. So it's no surprise whatsoever that FFXIII was a game that's barely a game and more one 40-hour long event sequence, because he directed it.

3) Hajime Tabata...is the guy behind Type-0, Crisis Core and 3rd Birthday. None of these are bad games. But 2 of them ARE terrible fanservice cash-outs, which is unsurprising seeing as they're all PSP titles.

Now for Yoshida: FFXIV ARR is pretty much the first FF game made since the end of the PS2 (2006) that everyone generally agrees is a great game, critics and fans alike. And this is probably my favorite part about Yoshida, but it's pretty clear that he's a fan of Final Fantasy as a GAME SERIES and a gamer, not just a "game where numbers pop up" or "story-driven experience" with a bunch of black-clad spikey haired wierdos. This is the biggest difference I feel between Yoshida and his team vs. Nomura and the other developers at square enix. Yoshida is clearly a GAMER before anything else, and it shows with his decisions and inspirations. He takes information from the fans as a template, but still relies on his intuition as a developer to not just fanservice the game to death.

Thats why I like the guy. I know you asked for other MMO developers, but I used the ones at SE because honestly, the contrast of the other square enix guys is why Yoshida shines so much imo.


So TL;DR: I think people like Yoshida so much because above all, it feels like ARR is a game that's being developed by a fellow gamer, instead of a director with a success flowchart. ARR doesn't take many risks, and it doesn't really do anything new at all, but what it DOES do feels self-aware and solid enough to work, and that's all that matters -- the game is fun.

It doesn't take long to realize that Yoshi-P is very passionate about his job and the game, and he's very humble. He loves to laugh and smile, you can tell he loves life. He's very active in the community and he will always be known as the the producer that turned a dying MMO around, which is unheard of. And he does actually play FFXIV a lot, you'd be surprised how few game developers even play their own games... Some people are just looking to make a living - but others are truly passionate about what they do. Everything I've said here about him is 10x when comparing Yoshi-P to any other MMO producer.

Have you seen how the guy dresses? Anybody with amazing fashion sense like that is bound to be popular.
