Shonisaurus...?

Is it possible to fish this guy with the supra rod and no fc buffs?

The lowest number successful catch I can find reported is 381 Gathering, which yes, is within reach with the Supra rod, no FC buffs, and I believe no Forager's gear either.

But I don't understand then...I have every piece of forager's gear melded with the cap, the i70 accessories full melded too, and the supra rod, and I'm sitting at:

375 gathering
304 perception

What food am I supposed to use to get to the supposed 381 gathering and 321 perception required for shonisaurus?

There's several good foods you can use as a fisher. The three best, in ascending power (and ascending price due to being harder recipies/requiring rarer materials):
Trapper's Quiche (+17 Gathering/+7 Perception on HQ)
Tomato Pie (+19 Gathering/+8 Perception on HQ)
Spinach Quiche (+24 Gathering/+10 Perception on HQ)

With Spinach Quiche, you actually have the stats to catch basically everything in the game short of Nepto Dragon and maybe one or two other legendary fish (Which you would definitely be able to catch with the FC buff active)

I haven't heard anything about needing Perception to catch Shonisaurus (or any fish really, barring increasing your HQ chances for those who are mooched). Or necessary for any particular fish. HQ Stuffed Artichoke would get you to 381 Gathering/320 Perception.

Minimal Perception needed for HQ Mahar is 320 (if I remember correctly?)

Therefore, Shonisaurus requires 320 perception

I've caught 4 NQ Mahars with sub 320 perception :\

I read somewhere that the requirements were 384/321 although those may not be the exact numbers. I used NQ Haddock dip for the perception boost, but I did have the fc gathering buff up (385 gathering with max melded gear and supra). You may want to wait to get the Ironworks rod to catch it if you don't have access to the fc buff.

HQ Stuffed Artichoke if you have supra and foragers gear should get you enough of the stats you need for Shonisaurus but I can't confirm it 100% as I've yet to catch it (Mahar keeps escaping me now -_-).

Can confirm that 381 Gathering and 320 Perception is enough to get Shonisaurus ^.^ HQ Stuffed Artichoke with maxed forager's/i70 acc's and Supra is what I used

On next window...got 2 mahar, but both NQ, I feel this guy's gonna be rough, there were a legion of fishers in the witchdrop spot lol, nobody even managed a mahar HQ...I have a bad feeling about this fish.

I missed my first window earlier today, well, got to fish once with pre-mooched Cloud Cutter and Mahar got away and I just had to go afk.

Next window I think the RNG god smiled upon me as I went 1/1 on HQ Mahar, and 1/1 Shoni.

(Just before that I fished Rhamphorhynchus because I didn't want to waste a mooch!)

I was on the opposite end of the RNG gods this morning - not a single HQ Cloud Cutter for the whole window.....

This one was actually one of my easier ones. Forager's gear max melded supra rod spinach quiche fc gathering buff third open window caught three Mahar all hq landed schyronis on third mooch.

Consider yourself lucky then. Shonisaurus and Helicoprion are the worst because they combine very limited availability + nasty RNG barriers.

Across 2 months, 5 HQ Mahars, 5 Shoni escapes, and this is with averaging one window every 2-3 days. Rare weather conditions and rare mooches weren't enough, no, let's give it a high escape rate as well!
