I never bothered to get the Atma weapons when they came out since I spend all night trying to get a second stone to get and it never did lol, so now my bard's gear is either tomestone of soldiery gear or coil gear with a zenith weapon. To get ready for the expansion I was thinking to get all tomestones of poetics gear for her then since the level cap is being raised I would natually get 61+ level weapons while leveling. I know we don't know everything about the expansion yet, but will I be ok without Atma or am I going to need it?

Really? Why did you even bother to ask? Atmas are super easy to get now and take little time to get. I think someone said the yoshi P said (don't have an actual quote)the zodiac weapons will be the best weapons in the game.

I did take a break for a few months so I guess I didn't hear that atma was easier to get. Trying to farm a second atma brought back horrible memories of looking for coffers in FFXI for AF gear lol.

It only got "easier" because people like you. I had no issue with doing lots of fates to try for 1 atma. It just meant more GC seals and closer to my 3k fate achievement, which I have now. You should do some research maybe before crying over a video game. Also, I cannot stress this enough, this is not FFXI or any other MMO. This is FFXIV and some of us die hards have been playing since 1.0 launch.

You don't "need" to progress your Relic. There's always alternatives. Going to Zenith isn't a bad idea because it's relatively painless for an i90, but even still - you can get an easy i100 weapon with an Unidentified Allagan Tomestone from Syrcus Tower (trust me your competition on this drop will be very low); and an easy i110 if you can upgrade that with a sands of time from the same location/second coil (Might take a few runs, but really, Syrcus isn't hard). And I'd wager that i110 is probably good enough to do everything in the game right now. A possible exception being Final Coil, but you can even get an i115 without ever stepping in there (Turn 9 drop, Shiva EX upgraded weapon) and then an i130 if you can clear the first couple turns, so...

Atma is pretty easy to get now. If you dont get any atmas by the one hour mark of casually fating (instead of try hard-ing to tag every fate in the zone and clearing as fast as possible), start suspecting something is up and change to another zenith weapon or change zones. I recently completed my 3rd set of atma for blm and was using pld to get the atmas. Majority of the atma stones were acquired within 10 fates. The other ones that took me 3+ hours (about 3 of them), I started getting suspicious and switched to another zenith weapon and on 2 of them, I got them on the very next fate. Could all just be coincidence but I'm basically still saying that you can finish 1 atma set in 1 day or less if you wanted to.

The relic chain is designed for people who are a completionist style of gamer or enjoy spending the time on something unique/bragging rights (not in a bad way I respect those who put in the effort). The chain is great to satisfy that type of gamer. If you aren't, there are alternate equally good upgrade paths achieved by other means such as soldiery (and soon the poetic weapons I'd guess) or gated by content such as coil or ex primals.
I think the design of the relic/zodiac path is good to appeal to a certain group. Others, like myself, just have to realize it is a quest line not designed for my tastes as I'd rather spend those hours learning primals and SCOB and with my play schedule I sadly don't have time for both.
I'll continue with my relic chain slowly at my own pace, it just isn't a primary means of weapon upgrades for me :) -

tbh its up to you, even though ATMAs are easy to get, the rest of phases still take time and obviously if you arent that fussed over a few stats on 1 piece dont bother.
Invest your time doing what you want and get the other options which are viable to play end game. -

Relic: I'm going to just mention this to give an understanding. Guaranteed drops from 2.0 Primals. This will be old content and thus you can expect very long queue times.
Atma: Fates are here to stay, but the Atma Fates pop in specific 2.0 zones, which will not be as popular (hell even Golden Saucer may see the world empty).
Animus: More 2.0 Fates, 2.0 Dungeon Bosses, and 2.0 open world grinding.

Basically, they will have to change how the Relic process upgrades for 3.0 for new players as most of the old systems will be extremely tedious. Therefore, if you still have not done your Atma, I would suggest waiting for 3.0 and just getting Shiva or Poetic weapons for now. -

There is pretty much no reason to go through the relic weapon grind unless you are a casual player with A LOT of extra time on hand. Currently the relic weapon line will take somewhere around 120+ hrs to complete all sections. The reward for that is currently an ilvl125 weapon (likely ilvl135 once 2.5 hits)
Here are the comparable weapons and the time required to get them:
Soldiery weapon - ilvl110 - syrcus tower - 1300 soldiery - roughly 10hours
Shiva weapon - ilvl115 - shiva ex - roughly 10 hours but requires a decent party at this time. Soldiery weapon is a bit easier
Poetics Weapon - ilvl130 - crystal tower final raid (24 man in 2.5) - 1300 poetics - roughly 20 hours but requires 3 week minimum due to lockouts/poetics cap -

with those weapons and the massively lower time required to get them, I don't personally see why anyone would spend over 100 hours on a single item. Especially considering that there is currently NO content (except T13) that you even need a weapon above ilvl110. And T11-T12 gives you access to ilvl120 weapons.........
It has been said many, MANY times before.
If you want to run slightly more challenging (and i mean slightly because Syrcus Tower is a joke) content, then you can acquire very comparable weapons in 10% of the time
If you do not like party content, prefer easy/grindy activities, and have time to spare, then going after the relic weapon is for you -
