Is it okay to take gil to delete characters (mules/alts) you own?

Would be nice to get an official word from GM who understands this. This wouldn't be a transaction outside of the game.

Someone offers you gil, or you offer to delete your said character for gil.

Timing would best be done on voice chats.

Proof of ownership would be needed before the transaction.

You would add that person to your friend list and watch their name change after said transaction.

Don't think people would waste their time trying to scam but its always a possibility.

I think you need the rest of us to understand this too not just a GM.

No clue what your getting at.

If it's referring to what I think it's referring to, there's this....thing...now going on where people are creating alts with a name to reserve it and then sell it for gil to someone who wants to use that name. You may see this in party finder occasionally.

It would be hilarious if someone paid for that, then during char creation or name change service another person making a character grabbed the name first :D

That's what I think it's referring to, Looks to me like OP is trying to make sure if selling a character name would be allowed, or if it's a punishable offense or something. I'm willing to bet that it'll at least be "frowned upon" by the devs, if they're not able to justify taking action.

It's probably not a punishable offense.

I really don't see any reason to do this as there is likely very little (near non-existent) demand for what I think you're suggesting. As jars said, we have surnames. The amount of name combinations would just render this method of getting gil completely pointless (and illogical in my opinion) unless you know someone that wants a very specific name for a character bad enough to essentially buy it from you. I would imagine that finding someone for that sort of transaction would be very hard. Even with the name changing available on the Mog Station now, I doubt someone would pay in game money on top of $10USD (or other territory equivalent) for an extremely specific name.

Doesn't seem any different than "Selling" a house. You basically take gil to release an asset you own at a specific time. Questionable, but not really ToS breaking unless you are getting real money out of this.

Hmm... name squatting. Underhanded, disgraceful, selfish. Yes. Rule-breaking, not hardly unless you're scamming.

This name thing is so ridiculous I don't even know.

Name squatting is pretty old hat. The fact it's still a thing is what amazes me, but people really love to have their vanity names. It's why the '17 Clouds' is a very real, if funny, occurrence.

Also not to mention that in the ToS they say not to use any other trademarked names. It would be hilarious if someone bought this, the person selling it reported them for having a trademark named, they lost it, the seller pick it up again and re-sell it.

So, I am going to go with it is probably illegal since the only 'desired' names would likely be trademarked.

You also make a huge assumption that the name becomes available on the server right away when the character is deleted.

With the current ability to have both first and second names, this really shouldn't be an issue. Unless a person wants a very specific name that is extremely popular like.. "Cloud Strife" or something, which I believe all servers probably already have... this makes little sense. And anyone wanting Cloud, Sephiroth or other popular Final Fantasy names really needs some originality...

This may be iffy due to the fact that you are paying gil for an out of game service.

That's the thing, the gil and the character name are all in-game. There's no out-of-game about it. "You like my name? Want it? That'll be 7 million gil." And not a dime was spent nor web site visited. The real rub here is the high potential for scamming. You pay the gil, log to character creation and, look at that, you can't use the name or the seller timed it to where you can't make a character on your server leaving the name you bought open to get snagged by someone else.

If you want a character with a specific name, just do like all the other douches and add x's around it: Xmydouchex Xnamewastakenx.

Sounds lame to me, from all angles. Try to come up with an alternate spelling or twist on the name you want, or heaven forbid, be original. By paying someone who's squatting on a desired name, you are rewarding them for that behaviour and demonstrating that it is a lucrative activity.

And of course, I would think the odds of getting scammed are quite high. SE will not do anything about it, as long as you willingly handed them your gil. It's just like those jerks who clean out their guild's bank and then leave. I've never heard of any of those people facing any consequences.

Name-squatting is as old as MMOs are.

If you want a character name, you better be logging in right when the servers are coming up for launch. Otherwise it's going to someone else who gets to be Cloud Strife.
