Darknight should be a dps Role

First of all i know this isn't ff11 but i played that game for 11 years before switching over to ff14, and i have been playing ff14 sense they came out. I was looking forward to the day they added darknight.

I know ff14 need more tank jobs but i don't think drk should be one of them. Darknight was always the opposite of paladin, and was one of the greatest dps jobs in 11 and many other ff games.

I realy like most things they did in ff14, but i wish they would stop changing the jobs we loved from ff11. My favort jobs from 11 were darknight, warrior , and ranger.

Warrior went from dps to tank
Darknight is going from dps to tank
And now they adding another range job but its a healer class? isn't all healer classes kinda range... Where is our Ranger dps.

I know we need more tanks and healer classes. but there has to be more options then them changing the jobs we already love the way they are.

I don't mind.

Hmm...if you like the things they are now, then you should at least give new things a try. We've still yet to see their skill sets, so lets not judge too quickly past their given roles.

First off WAR in FFXI was not a tank, nor was it a DPS. It was both. You could play either to a certain degree and quite effectively.

Second, they never said Ranger was even coming to the game. You just literally made that up. A gun class is coming to the game and it is rumored at this point to be a healer. Why does it have to follow the same pattern as a game that came out by your own admission so long ago? We have ranged DPS in the game already.

This OP is basically "I don't like it, so no". The fact of the matter is that DRK is a tank, and thats the end of it. We will wait and see how that pans out after its released. This topic has been done to death.

What's a Darknight? xD

I don't really mind. I mained SAM in FFXI. If they would add it as a tank, let's do it! I'd main it too.

I understand loads of people wished for DRK to be DPS. I think it's a matter of letting go of a mindset. DRK can fit as a tank. Let's wait and see how it pans out.

I always felt that DRK being a DPS in XI was a missed opportunity for another tank class.

Visually, it made no sense. All that heavy armor, but couldn't take damage proportional to the physical volume of armor they were wearing (visually). Just like how I have a problem with DRG's current M.DEF.

I like the concept of DRK as a tank. It makes it more in line with the anti-paladin. Two sides of the same coin. Using drains, spike spells, reflects, etc instead of flat mitigation and def cooldowns.

Won't comment on XI (never played it), but the other games didn't really have "dps" or stuff. There were only dps and a few healers (with huge dps possibilities) and some of them were more tanky than the others. But yeah, you can't compare online and offline games as the fundamental mechanics are different.

I think that they just don't care about FFxi's jobs and just do their stuff. Whatever happens in FFxi is none of FFxiv's concern. You should stop considering that the jobs are the same just because they bear the same name.

As you said, this isn't FFXI...its XIV. XIV is its own beast that's playing by its own rules.

Hell...DRK may actually get me interested in actually tanking in this game (which also means that...aw crud...i've gotta get some actual tanking practice in). GLD/PLD and MRD/WAR really don't interest me all that much...but DRK does spark it a little.

Actually in FFXI DRK was an excellent tank and dps with relic, in fact in some cases better than PLD. This especially happened later in FFXI's life. This is not FFXI and never will be, so to all you complainers, shut the F up and enjoy the game for what it is or quit; and stop speaking of shit on a biased, uninformed basis.

Think I'm getting the logic flow.

Dark Knight = Batman
Batman = Ninja
Ninja = DPS

Therefore, Dark Knight = DPS.

I can't comment on FFXI(but people don't seem to want us to, so I guess that's okay), but there is one thing about the Dark Knight that has stayed relatively constant through the series:

They wear Heavy Armor(+1 Tank) and can take a lot of punishment(+1 Tank).

Furthermore, some more recent iterations actually want enemies to attack them(+1 Tank) because that pisses them off and makes them stronger(+1 DPS). A DPS who goes out of his way to take damage pisses the party off. A Tank who merely does his job takes damage and gets rage benefits for free.

So... that's 3 points that point to a Dark Knight being suited for a Tanking role and just 1 that points to DPS.

As for the whole sacrificing HP thing, it would probably best work as a risk/reward system. If you want to survive as best as possible, sacrifice as little HP as possible. You'll keep threat but just deal less damage. If you're feeling confident or you're just out in the world, you can be more aggressive. Besides, I don't doubt there will be self heals or drains in the Job. However, do we even have confirmation that this will be a mechanic for the class? If not, there is a distinct possibility that it either won't exist or will be greatly diluted.

I know this isn't FFXI....but they should design the game around muh FFXI. Nostalgia goggles too strong

Ok so alot don't agree with me but that is cool, but i don't with eveything u guys said either.

i said i know this isn't 11 but lets look at the facts .. every job that ff14 came up with beides warrior was the same idea as 11, for job roles. So i didn't think it was to much to expect same for drk.

Anyone that really played 11 knows that warrior and drk were not real tanks.. they couldn't tank anything that was really end game... .besides maybe in abyssa. Drk did pull alot of hate .. but had one of the crappy defenses and the game and dread spikes didn't make up for that

as far as the ranger topic thats mybad .. they just annouce the next gunner classis gonna most likely be a healer.

Good relic drks could tank, they tanked salvage and hnms actually, all pre abyssea. And if 14 was the same job wise, nin would be able to tank and so would mnk, just like in 11. So let's stop comparing or expecting this entirely new and different game to be anything like 11.

I'd like for DRK to be similar to how it was in Bravely Default honestly, best iteration of the class so far IMO. I already made a thread on this though before so that's all I have to say.

I don't think XIV's BRD is anythig like XI's, it doesn't even fit the same role.

You want dark knight to be dps like ff11, then go play ff11. They ain't going to make every single role like how it is in previous games so you will like it. Heavy armor, great sword. To me, it fits as a tank. Warriors ain't a good tank in ff11? who cares, they're beasts in ff14. You're not the director of this game. They make dark knight what they want. And if they're confident enough to announce it first means dark knight is gonna be hell alot of fun. #dealwithit

Honestly...I'd rather have DRK as a tank over dps for the simple fact that...there is honestly a massive shortage of them in the game. Same with healers.

Think about it.

Tanks: GLD/PLD, MRD/WAR

Heals: CNJ/WHM, SCH

DPS: ROG/NIN, LNC/DRG, THM/BLM, ARC/BRD, ACN/SMN, PUG/MNK

You REALLY wanna add something else to that last list? Cuz...dayum. Ratios are already a little (read: a LOT) skewed as it is.

Tank and Healing classes need some sweet, sweet lovin in the way of choices.

Last thing this game needs is more DPS

I think most rational people have accepted that 3.0 will only bring a new tank (DRK) and healer (the gun job, probably Chemist or something). No new DPS jobs for a long while (maybe 4.0).

Except for 11 these were all offline though. Can't really apply the same rules to an MMO. And XI's DRK (with the exception of Kraken/Souleater/BW Zerg nonsense) was a pretty bad dps until very recently when Great Swords actually got good with Resolution. Hell in Abyssea they were behind NIN, THF and even a properly geared WHM.

How would DRK work as a tank? Would the black magic be used to simply do enough damage to keep hate while doing enough to be a full DPS? Kind of like how PLD can heal to keep hate, but not heal enough to be a healer?
