I just did this yesterday and man what a pain. This link does show the path of least resistance.

Vultures I was able to take a few hits from. Everything else I think once shot me. I started off taking my own path and it ended very badly. You will still have some opposition on this path but it is manageable. Not a very well designed quest at all.
FYI. When you plant the crystals, it will take about 5 minutes to turn into a deaspected crystal. I placed all five of them and still had to wait 2-3 minutes. (just so you don't wait at each one at a time)
Suddenly? This quest has always been a really difficult run. I did it months before patch 1.18, and it took me literally hours just to run to Mor Dhona. And yes, it's going to be even more difficult if you try to do it at physical rank 29.
You're going to have to be really, really patient with this one. Pull mobs away from where you want to run, which will leave holes for you to run through after you Return. Wait for mobs to move before running past. Equip the Archer ability Quickstride. Figure out which mobs aggro to movement, which aggro to sound, which aggro to sight, etc. Avoid, avoid, avoid.
I thought this was the most difficult main storyline mission. And it was difficult because it was so hard just to get where you needed to go to do the quest. And keep in mind that you don't need to do it right at level 34. You can wait until you're higher in level before doing the quest. But keep after it and you'll get it done.
I thought the name already said something about how dangerous the route would be. Mor D(or)hona. One does not simply walk into Mor D(or)hona!
I went to Mor Dhona within days of starting playing FFXIV last year, so I just teleported to the closest Camp (the southern one) and got done with it.
However, I do have some advise for those going to Mor Dhona for the first time, and can't deal with the lv80 mobs on the narrow paths from the Black Shroud, take the long way through Coerthas, it's easier to avoid high level mobs using that way.
I do agree that the quest needs some tweaking if people are meant to reach Mor Dhonas by the Black Shroud.
I suggest you to chose Coerthas route, that's the one i did yesterday,Black Shroud one is now 98% impossible to go.It took HOURS to get to Mor'Dona, but in the end i got the Camp teleport and i had no problem with the mobs in there.
there is a way through the black shroud that is not infested with efts or raptors. You just have to figure it out and be careful.
The link provided by Royal shows the way there, you just need to be careful of the vulture and vulture trap plants but you can survive 2-3 hits from them and they will leave you alone if you keep running.
Good luck!
Edit: make sure you set your homepoint to the crimson bark crystal in case. And also, while you are in mor Dhana, you should go get teleport at the brittlebark (name?) camp there. The way to it is not overcrowded with deadly monsters.
With 1.19, I wonder if we will get a Coerle Step-compatible route?
I'm upto this quest as well, and finding it really hard to get past the Lv70+ monsters. Might have to try the route through Coerthas, because Crimson Bark route is really tough now. Kind of stupid that this is a R34 quest; what R34s can take hits from R70+ monsters? It's ridiculous.
Edit: Done the quest now; definitely take the Coerthas route. It takes forever to reach Mor Dhona, but it's (a bit) safer. You still have to dodge numerous R50+ stags and 70+ wyrmhounds but because it's a more open space it's a bit easier. Don't be tempted to go for Camp Revenant's Toll either, unless you want to dodge Lv90+ Basilisks. Managed to get Camp Brittlebark after a lot of dodging stuff but I'd still say Coerthas is a bit easier to run from. As my first time in Mor Dhona though, the music is awesome.
I think the worst part about this quest is the sylphs were offering to teleport you (I think) and your companion opens their cake hole and says "No thanks." I did this last night and died 4 times running through Black Shroud. It is pretty ridiculous that a rank 34 quest has you running through such dangerous territory.
You could just wait a few more days, and chocobo throuhg hte paths.
Hell with that! Running is easy. Just follow the steps here -

Use {Quickstride} to get around the Efts and you're GTG.
i did this one not to long ago, it is just a game of patience. tbh if it was a straight run it'd be one of the easier quests. to complete. i just set my HP as CB and used the words f**k and Leeeeeeeroy a few tiems ^^, but overall i enjoyed it.
Just so you folks know, people have been complaining for months that the storyline missions were not offered early and often enough. Here's one thread suggesting that they lower the ranks required for storyline missions back in April. I argued at the time that it would mean people would be below the appropriate level for the missions, which would make them much more difficult to complete, and I referred to this storyline quest in particular.
So this is the difficult thing that SE has to balance. There are going to be people arguing on both sides of every issue. Many people enjoy the challenge of running through high level areas and completing difficult quests. Many people are asking for more content like this challenging mission.
Be patient, keep in mind that everything is easier in a party, and remember that you don't have to complete the quest right away. It's much easier with a few more levels under your belt.
At least with this quest if you really can't get to Mor Dhona the Black Shroud way, there are other alternatives. Coerthas way is very long, but easier to avoid aggro monsters. I have no problem with difficult quests, I just think that this particular quest might be a bit much for people who play it at R34 (being the R34 story quest) and can't find the right route.
I suppose I'd prefer the challenging content to be stuff that isn't the main story (at least until the high level story missions), but R34 really isn't that high level in the scheme of things.
Another LS member was suggesting that it might be better to not link Story missions via level, maybe similar to another method like XI. That way, we can keep up with the story, and if we need to get stronger for the next mission, we'll still be free to do so.
Wait until you do the rank 46 quest. Futures Perfect is impossible to do now since lv9x mobs are everywhere around Revenant's Toll. I had to pay a bunch to have someone port me there, nobody was willing to help, what an utter disappointment.
I had no problem with the level 90 dragons... you just run where they're not (They were all sitting around on one side and my husband and I ran across the other) We didn't have to wait either for them to move out of our way.
If you're having a problem with the level 34 one... run with someone? I don't recall what level those birds on the Gridania path (we attempted Coerthas first and I couldn't get around the toads) were because my husband and I didn't bother doing it until we were 45 anyways, and they didn't really hit us for that much. But an extra person to grab a few that agro helps big time so you don't end up with 10 chasing you down.
Bumping because serious issue needs addressing.
Prior to 1.19 I found it easy enough to solo the level 34 main scenario quest "Forever Taken" with one character. Travelling to Mor Dhona via Coerthas was always fun!
However its now literally impossible to safely reach the eastern side of Mor Dhona since it appears they added several Evil Eyes for whatever reason in the tunnel starting from 15, 6. This is the tunnel near the Coerthas zone that connects that area with the eastern side. Unless I'm daft and there was some hidden route...but I don't remember there being any evil eyes in that area at all prior to 1.19.
Travelling from Brittlebark is also out, as is from Camp Crimson Bark in the Black Shroud. So unless I convince a party of level 50s to plow thru the Evil Eyes for me, I won't be able to do this anymore.
I tried going through the black shroud route using a chocobo but it's still quite impossible...esp when there are like raptors, drakes, and eft like mobs chilling all in th area looking in all directions. So im probably gonna try with a friend or go the coerthas route.
Not to mention they seem to have taken away the ability to teleport from an Aetheryte camp to an Aetherial Gate. (Did anyone else notice this?) Not sure if it still works vice-versa, but the point is I can't avoid the Evil Eyes packed in the tight tunnels by teleporting from Revenant's Toll to Singing Shards.
Outrunning the Evil Eyes via chocobo also doesn't work since they still haven't removed mob ranged attacks.
The level 34 mission was always daunting but prior to 1.19 it could at least be completed with relative ease. (If you had Mor Dhona Camps accessed.) As you could simply traverse the less dangerous area of Mor Dhona inhabited only by non-aggressive toadstools with the occasional isolated toad that was easy to avoid. What is the point of putting high level Ahrimans in tight tunnels, making them impossible to avoid...?
Until this is adjusted, the difficulty of this mission is needlessly high. Remove the stupid eyes, already. :/
Just saying that there is the northern most route from Crimsonbark as suggested before, and only Vultures there. As long as you can get to Crimsonbark, you can go to Mor Dhonna. There is only a Diremite occassionally spawn there but I don't remember it being over lvl 55+.
Nope, there's level 70+ Lindwurms and level 90+ efts packed in tight tunnels in the areas leading from Crimsonbark to Mor Dhona.
My point is I used to be able to do this with relative ease going from Camp Revenants Toll. Now I can't. Why did it need to change?
No you're going the wrong way. I went through Crimsonbark as R36 Goldsmith sometime around October 2010, Lindwurm route is the wrong way, you are not going through the lowlands, take the upper level with Vulture.
Here's the route:

I just did this mission earlier today, and I attempted the Crimson Bark route first, following the maps here. It wasn't a problem, even sneaking past Diremites, up until I hit a spot with three Pteroctraps and an Eft. Even with the eft out of the way, the traps made short work of me as a 34 Lancer. Two more attepts yielded the same fate, even with a chocobo. So yeah, that route didn't work too well for me.
I ended up going a completely different route, using the Brittlebark teleport I had gotten a while back - achieved through a somewhat hilarious naked level 1 dash to Mor Dhona with friends through the Thanalan route, but anyway. The Evil Eyes make this path pretty dangerous too, but I discovered by going northwest from Brittlebark and heading close to the lake to start with, you can avoid a good part of the Eyes. (Unfortunately, there's still an enormous amount of Truffle Hogs to worry about, but you have far more space to dodge these out in the open.) There was only one spot with Eyes I had to deal with, and they only seem to aggro sight, so I waited till they were looking the other way and flew past on chocobo. For reference, here is the path I took.
It took several deaths (it got to the point were I stripped down and used an old spear so I wouldn't damage my actual gear) and a Brittlebark homepoint (to be safe) to get to the quest points, but I consider myself lucky. I have to agree that this is, overall, too difficult a mission for its level. Mor Dhona is pretty much a death trap.
Finished this morning, not to difficult through Coerthas route.
I was only awarded 15,500 XP of the supposed 27k though.
Did you switch to some job much higher or lower than 34 to complete the quest? That can affect SP awarded.
I think it's a GOOD thing that it's very difficult to get to Mor Dhona. It's supposed to be a highly dangerous place. It would be silly if you could just waltz in. It took me two-three attempts to make it back in the day as well, it's a healthy thing.
it's really tough to do this quest.................WTF SNEAK AND INVIS
