I'm finding it strange as I do this, but I'm managing to take on anything that is up to 2 levels higher, also doing a Lv25 levequest whilst on Lv24.
Also, I managed to complete CNJ hunting log rank 2 at lv19.

This is fairly standard depending on your class. Completing rank 2 Hunting marks by lvl 19 is pretty normal. Generally rank one is for 1 - 10, two is 11 - 20, etc. The lvling process is pretty easy in this game, which is good considering you have so many classes to lvl. Overall, anything on the world map is toned down compared to things in dungeons. FATEs are about the only exception, which fluctuate based on how many people it took to beat the FATE last time.
I take it you're used to a style more like FFXI where anything over your own level was a chore to kill? It's nice in this game to not have to rely on a party to level grind.
Despite me doing this, I managed to level up about 9 times as CNJ (I think) in little over a week, without going into a dungeon, but relying on hunting/challenge log entries, as well as levequest and Fate grinding also. I may have a go with other skills the same way, starting with THM.
I hate it when games are designed so that anything one or two levels above you is impossible to kill. It's much better when your level leads you toward "recommended" quests, rather than force you to grind and scrape for inches of progress at a time.
The dmg/defense penalties are at 6 levels difference.
Yeah, WHM is definitely easy because nothing is really a threat to you. It might take a bit (or a lot!) longer to kill the mobs when they are 6-7 levels higher than you because your healing yourself so much, but it can be done.
My THM is only level 26 atm so not sure if I don't have stuff yet that would help make them easier then an ACN, but I find needing to always re-position to get out of AOEs happens at times where I HAVE to break my spell in order to not get hit. THM is soooo squishy. It would prob help if I x-class Physick for the lower level stuff now that I think about it, but I'm pretty sure THM heals are garbage. They can pump out a ton of damage, which I love, but I have to be more aware on THM than ACN.
Plus my chocobo is rank 13 with a fully spec healer so if I bring that thing out it's very hard for open world mobs to kill me regardless :D
My statement is 100% true in its form as of mechanics at time of posting. I never said you couldn't kill something beyond that range, I just said that is where the penalties start. Given enough time and space, given it does not have a ranged attack, and you don't have a 100% miss rate you. You could kill a level 50 mob at level 1 with poison potions if you really wanted.
Just as a PSA, don't do leves at 25 when you're 24. There's a minor penalty for doing leves you're not in the 0-4/5-9 level range of, and you'll generally get better EXP just by doing the 20 leves with +4 bonus.
In fact, do every leve at the +4 bonus: they're not that much more difficult when you're at that level range and the exp reward skyrockets.
The open world mobs in XIV are designed to simply drop over dead when you approach them on any job. Aka it is designed to be face roll easy outside instances. No danger, no risk, something you can do while watching Netflicks.
XIV the game is designed so that the open world is for solo players. It is basically modeled after WoW where a mob at your level is extremely weak compared to you unless it is rare spawn.
Comparing it to an older mmo such as XI. Take the mobs level and reduce it by 10 and that is about the equivalent difficulty. Aka Fighting a level 30mob in XIV is like fighting a lvl 20 mob in XI at lvl 30. Fighting a mob in XIV 8 to 10 levels above you is equivalent to an Even match fight. I am not a fan of the XIV model, honestly I despise it, but it is that way so people with little time can easily solo without no stress. The new age of mmo player seems to enjoy this for what ever reason.
Other than my first class when I had bad armor, I've reguarly taken leves +4 levels. I should see if I can do higher. :D
