As a new player... so far, I'm hating this game.

So, I started a new character after buying the game. After running around for 2 days doing random quests I'm level 12 with no ability to change jobs. and i'm stuck on a quest where it wants me to use the stupid autotranslater... and it isn't working out. Is there any guide? I've looked up a couple but they haven't been useful, I'm not sure what sequence of quests I'm supposed to do to actually get my job.

TLDR: I'm super lost. helpppp

You actually have to buy a new weapon and equip it to "change jobs".

No idea what that quest is.

It won't let me equip anything besides the axes I've gotten. I have a sword and shield but its grayed out with an X on it. What am I missing?

You're able to use the sword and shield after visiting the gladiator guild in Uldah. And that quest is silly. You can ignore it.

Welcome to FFXIV Jannso :D 1 thing I will say about XIV is that there is alot to learn! but thankfully the community is nice and is always helpful and there is a in game help section if you want to look things up.

Now to change jobs you need to clear your LV10 *might be LV15* class quest and then your guild master should say to you now you can change to something else. Once you are able to change class, to unlock other classes you need to go to their guild and talk to the Guild receptionist and a option should appear saying "So you want to be a" and then you do what the quest tells you to do and when your done the quest reward is your starting Weapon for that class. As soon as you equip that weapon your class should change ^^ Any more questions feel free to ask \o

and don't worry about it, my wife would be SO lost if I didn't help her out. Some people catch on to the game quickly, some take abit more time.

u have to go to the specific class guild first do ther first quest then they will give u a level 1 weapon.. equip the said weapon to change ur class :3

u can save equipment setups on the charcter screen and assign them to your hotkeys bar for quicker changes later on :3

As mentioned, you'll have to pick up the quest from the receptionist at the class guild for each additional class you want to add. Some of those guilds you won't be able to reach until you unlock access to the airships that travel between the three main cities. (Airship access comes from a level 15 main scenario quest.)

Locations of the class guilds are:
Gridania: Lancer, Archer, Conjurer, Leatherworker, Carpenter, Botanist
Ul'dah: Gladiator, Pugilist, Thaumaturge, Weaver, Goldsmith, Alchemist, Miner
Limsa Lominsa: Marauder, Rogue, Arcanist, Blacksmith, Armourer, Culinarian, Fisherman

The ones in Gridania, you can get any time after completing your level 10 quest from the Lancer's guild. You could actually reach Ul'dah on foot by traveling south and then west (Gridania -> Central Shroud -> South Shroud -> Eastern Thanalan -> Central Thanalan -> Ul'dah), but that's a long way, and you'd have to avoid most of the enemies along the way who will be well above your level, so it's easier to wait until you unlock the airship to take you there. Limsa Lominsa is on an island, so you cannot get there on foot and will have to wait until you get airship access.

Oh, one more thing. Each class is leveled separately, so when you unlock a new class, you'll be level 1 in that class. That means you'll be back to only being able to wear level 1 equipment. Keep your starter gear (or get replacements if you've already out-leveled and sold it) to use when unlocking new classes.

Once you have multiple classes unlocked, switching between them is a matter of which weapon you equip. For instance, if as a level 13 lancer you unlock archer, you'd alternate between being a level 13 lancer and level 1 archer depending on whether you're holding a spear or a bow. But since as a lancer, you'd be higher level with the ability to equip better armour, you'll generally want to change out all your equipment at once when alternating classes. That's the main purpose of saving multiple gear sets as Spawnie mentioned. Then, instead of just equiping the lance or bow, you'd equip your lancer gear set or archer gear set.

Under the Duty section of the menu is an option for Recommendations. That will show you any recommended quests in your zone. It can be very helpful early on to find things and remind you of where to go.

Otherwise, as mentioned, you will need to do your level 10 marauder quest to unlock the ability to get other classes. Once you have done that quest you can pick up the other classes by visiting the appropriate guild and equipping the weapon they give you.

And the autotranslator quest is annoying.

Sorry to see youre having a bad experience trying to figure things out. I was in the same boat before.

Pretty much what the others say about the class changing. You need to do the level 10 class quest. Your guildmaster will say something on the lines of pursueing other interests/guilds. Its also a good idea to keep up with the class quests. They provide free gear and essential spells.
Also keep up with the main scenario quests (flaming quest giver icon). You will get an airship pass that allows access to the other cities and their respective classes and jobs.
For the autotranslater, just hit tab if youre on a computer. Not sure how it works with a console. You can type a word then hit tab, then choose your word/phrase.

One thing people often miss with the auto-translator quest is that you must have the NPC selected when you say the thing for it to work. If you don't, they won't acknowledge it. In fact, for any quest where you have to do an emote to someone or say a phrase to someone, you must have them selected for it to count. That's a thing they should have mentioned somewhere in the game, but they never did =\

You need to complete your level 10 class quest before you get access to the armory. For auto translate if using keyboard and mouse, tab while entering text will bring up the menu. if using a controller, it's R1 while the text cursor is on.

The leveling in FF14 is horrible, it's a good thing that there is nice end-game donjons, trials and raids, I hated so much the leveling... Maps are wierd, I got lost many times, some quests like the story quest made me run 200 times at one place where there is no teleporter near, just to talk to an NPC... (The waking sand)

Okay, this, a million times, until I figured out the trick. Go to limsa limosa, aerthernet to arcanist guild, look to your left, and take the ferry there for 80 gil. it takes you to almost right in front of the waking sands, in less than 3 minutes of walking.

Fastest route possible!

Another thing about those quest where you have to say something to a npc along with having them selected the game is very pedantic when it comes to it, for instance one of the quests have you say With the Wind. However if you do not capitalize the w in with and the w in wind and you type with the wind it will not acknoweldge the prompt

Blame localization for that. Japanese does not have capitalization so the recognition code would not have taken that into account. You could argue that this is poor planning from the developers.
It would be looking for an exact text match with a key value. The localization teams then had to decide on a single text string to use as the match. The capitalization was probably decided to match with German, which is going to capitalize all nouns anyway.

Edit: I thought about how they are probably doing the text recognition. They probably have to change all the text into unicode before they compare it with the key value. Capital and lowercase letters have different unicode values. So to check something like "wItH tHe WiNd" while ignoring all capitalization would mean all combinations of lowercase and uppercase have to be considered. That would require up to 2^11=2048 comparisons. And you know *someone* would try to break it by entering as long a string as they could. Rather than poor planning it was probably deemed too resource intensive.

I would assume the game is in unicode already. As for string comparison. Most often one takes the string and does to lower or to upper and then compares that against the string looking for. That way you don't care about case at all.

The fastest way there actually, you just go to Horizon then take the chocobo porter for a few gil. Take a few bites of your sandwich and you will be in Vesper Bay. The maps are actually pretty accurate you just may have to zoom in or out. Best advice I can give you. Find a friendly FC. The one I run on Adamantoise , we will answer any question and go help someone if they are lost, it makes a huge difference in your gaming experience. You don't feel stuck on an island with your questions or when you hit a wall.

This is false, Ul'dah> Chocobo Porter> Waking Sands fastest route possible 2 minutes! :D

But seriously Chocobo Porter's are your best friends, cheaper than Teleports, and allows you to enjoy the scenery, or go bio or something else. ;)

Jannso, this forum is a great source of information and the Community is very helpful. I have found YouTube to be helpful also. But this is always my first stop.

Real the tutorials/help windows when they show up. They are not there for show only and most questions get answer if you just read them.

im way 2 lazy to read everyones else replys, its 3am first it would be called changing classes not jobs( i allso hate to be this guy allso im so sorry) but yes to better explain it, a job is something you get once you have reached lvl 30<- i wont go into full detail.. second about your quest i do believe that on PC/laptop it is ESC once you are on the Chatbox to bring us Auto Trans stuff and i if i remember right R1 on ps4 not sure if the same on ps3 (never played it on ps3)


is there anything else you would like to know? i will try to shed as much about ffxiv as i can :3
