Dark Knight Tank confirmed for 3.0
-
I am really excited! I don't enjoy the tanking style of the warrior of the paladin, I've always enjoyed a mix of melee and offensive magic. Hopefully SE can pull off this "offensive magic tank" a lot better than Blizzard's death knights.
-
Shut up and take (more of) my Money, Yoshi-P. This october has been amazing. 8D
-
-
I was actually waiting for Templar as a magic focused Tank with but Dark Knight will do just fine.
There's a lot of potential in this class but I hope it won't end up like an 2.0 WAR because we know how that turned out.
Stepping into the arcane and dark magic, I can see his AoE hate attack cost HP like FFx-2 souleater and a lot of debuffing/draining. But I guess it's a bit too early to tell, considering this job has no base class at all.
-
-
I couldn't be happier. Loved tanking on DRK in FFXI and was hoping hard to tank on DRK in FFXIV!!! Too bad its 6 months away.
-
Super Excited. But now I have to choose between WAR and DRK. I'm so conflicted. Going to have to flip a coin before each encounter to play them both!
-
Goodbye paladins and warriors. Hello dark knight as 90% of the tanking population. . . Maybe I'm just a scrub tank, but I firmly believe it takes a particular mindset to be a good and respectable tank. With the popular and highly anticipated great sword wielding dark knight class gone tank, you have current tanks and dps/healers jumping on the dark knight bandwagon. I foresee a lot of crying on the tank forums when it comes out.
I honestly don't mind dark knight as a tank, but it did rip up my high hopes of a samurai being a tank class... I like being a tank for the most part, and was banking on samurai to be my main - now with dark knight as a tank I dont know what to think or plan for. *Cries in a corner praying for samurai tank*
-
Ah I knew I should have come to the job forum first instead of the general discussion. The threads there are full of whining.
I'm really excited, I'm a big fan of greatswords and while I was hoping for Samurai to be tank, I'm not let down at all. I can't wait to see what they come up with and how this will handle.

I expect their to be a bunch of players who take Dark Knight, level it a bit (or even to 60) and then stop playing it because they either don't want the responsibilities of being a tank or don't like its mechanics. Endgame active tank population will likely be fairly balanced.

Samurai can still be a tank in the future. Dark Knight may have been chosen as the Tank class for the expansion to go with Heavensward's more medieval aesthetics.
-
Yeah I mean come on the last thing the game needs is a popular tank job right guys

Idk, it might not be in this expansion, but it doesn't meant they won't add SAM as a tank.
-
Well, I know what I'm doing once I get my Pally to level 50, cause even with me being 40 right now, I'm sure it'll take me that long to get to 50 and enjoy a bit of end game as Pally lol

You'll probably get Samurai if they ever do an actual Far East expansion, or our Japanese Doman friends reveal they have a few Samurai hanging around with them.

I like the idea of more tanks endgame, it's just going to be sad seeing little to no paladins/warriors when everyone is all about that great sword craze. If previous mmos have taught me anything, it's that great sword / dual wielders have always seemed to dominate populations in terms of filling their roles. However, I REALLY hope I am wrong in this aspect.
As for Samurai, who knows what SE will do. Everyone expected DRK to be a dps, but it came out as a tank. If there's one thing to learn from ffxiv or any ff game in general: previous titles are irrelevant. SE will do what it wants to do! Of course I'm still rooting for SAM to be a tank, if and when it ever comes out, but my overly depressing pessimistic self can't help losing faith xD

Tank jobs are popular? When did that happen?

No way, real tanks go Sword and Board.
-
darknight as tank sounds fun but it will all depend on skill set and how it plays.
personally I play pld when tanking but I really like war as well just have a lot less experience with it.
in all likelihood I will just switch between all tank classes assuming I am playing the game in another 6months.
-
Having another tank with a new tanking paradigm is good. Experienced tanks will still enjoy WAR/PLD, but now there will be more choice with what tanking pair you choose to employ.

I feel the same way. I was super excited about the possibility of a samurai tank and was a little let down when they announced dark knight. Not that I think that dark knight shouldn't be a tank, but I just don't like big weapon tanking. That's why I play paladin and haven't even maxed out warrior. I really hope they save samurai for the next tank class and don't make it a dps. It would be nice if they could work on getting tank and healing classes up to 4 so we have some more variety.
-
Graaaah. I can't get too excited for pure Dodge tanking. Unless DRK's will be able to bolster themselves with a lot of health or have some as yet unrevealed mechanic that will allow them to block, I'm not gonna play it. It always takes waaaay too long to iron out avoidance tanks.
-
Uhhhhhhg all I wanted from this game was DRK to be my Great Sword using DPS class, hopes are thoroughly dashed. :( /heartbroken
-
^this 2 handers are for hitting hard.... really hard..... not ... tanking =_=

Does anyone else think Dark Knight will start at level 30 with it's job stone totally overriding your base class?
Just seems to me that it would be described as a class without a job rather than a job without a class if it started at level 1.
-
Hmm this new job is compelling me towards leveling a tank! a job I thought could never play! awesome I can't wait!! :D

If they go with this, I'm hoping that there is some sort of prerequisite for being able to unlock DRK such as having unlocked PLD or WAR.
I'm really curious to see how this is going to be done.
-
It seems possible to me that DRK's tanking ability will come from its ability to be a heavy hitter. I'm sure it will be allowed to cross-class GLD to get Provoke, and MRD's weapon throw ability (since DRK won't have a shield to lob) for their initial provoking skill, and the rest of the Hate will be generated purely by them out damaging anyone other, single, target, with each ability also having eminity increasing effects.
Someone once stated, it may have been on this thread, or in another forum entirely, that not every "Tank" has to be just a meat shield that has skills equivalent to saying, "Hey! Over here! Ignore the mages, fight me you big loser!", then just have a bunch of defense numbers and huge HP pool to chip away at. DRK by it's very nature is going to be a heavy armor wearing class, so we'll have the defense numbers by our armor alone.
-
Few Final Fantasy games that had DRK in them gave them a huge HP pool, because they also had abilities to draw from their own HP to add more to damage, and I'm sure despite being a Tank class, XIV will have that too (and I'm sure people will freak for the first few weeks DRK players use them in dungeons lol).
What I'm trying to say is, DRK doesn't have to be a meat shield style tank. His form of tanking could very well be "Kill it fast, kill it hard, kill it before it kills me" (not aimed towards the party, mind you, more of his way of fighting), while PLD's are more of the "Ha, shield! Ha, parry! Ha, defensive skills all staked! Take your time guys, I'm good!"
Just my two gil. What ever SE decides to do to make DRK an efficient tank, everyone will adapt to it, and as a huge fan of the DRK class, and still feeling regret from never capping my DRK in XI, I will certainly having fun playing this class. (had to break my reply up, was too long for one post apparently).

Does that mean that marauders and warriors shouldn't be tanks either?

Hm, it sounds like they didn't give players the DKs skills from tactics.
The "sanguine sword ()" technique would be really helpful as one of it's early level skills, and something that would work like a brds song skills that would give him 50% atck -50% def buff so you could give them an ???% x dmg= mp absorbtion skill like infernal Strike. It would fit in better with the combat system for ARR, imo.
-
I assume it'll be a MAR 30 / BLM 15 class requirement (MAR is already two-handed class, shield lob makes no sense, bloodbath super does...). That would make it another offtank class, especially if it's a dodge/parry focus (more ideal for tanking adds) - unless there's some really neat status effects going on with it that affect bosses. Geared out into max parry, could really relieve tension on the offhealer.
Wouldn't mind a tank with Sleep.
Wonder if we're going to see some 'new' status effects in 3.0.
-
There will be no job requirements because they announced the dark knight is its own class.

Was this confirmed?
I'm pretty positive there will be class requirements, there just won't be a base class. I doubt a new player can just start from day1 on DRK.
-
The beginning of this post shows that DRK doesn't have a class requirement
-
Don't be silly. There will be job requirements so folks can't just pick up DRK. And if it has none and is "its own class", then it IS a base class.
SE don't appear to have stated either option. They just said "there isn't a base class". Context could mean there isn't a new class. That statement is wide open to interpretation - obviously, if there is zero base class, then it IS a base class. And if there's somehow no class levels involved, it's just "DRK is always max level (- level sync)" then there has to be requirements, otherwise that just blows the whole idea of progression out to sea. I suppose the requirement COULD be "finished main quest" or just a generic DoM/DoW L50(60?) unlock quest.
But previously, they also said that they wanted to make all the classes like Arcanist - two jobs.
Am I wildly out of the ballpark for trying to sum 2 + 2?
-
During the slideshow, the slide says no base class involved so that's all the info you get.
-
Hmm this is a JOB not a Class, I believe at lvl 30 you will be able to unlock the DRK via quest, same as all Jobs in the game. By "No base class" I understand that you won't need lvl 30MRD and 15PLD to get lvl 30WAR and so on.
-
I just thought of a far more fascinating (mechanically) possibility:
You could be any base class when selecting the DRK job crystal?
And wouldn't that be neat.
-
I was there, they said no class involved as if you get the DRK from lv1 but Yoshi added a sentence like "[...] Someone may find themselves able to do DRK from the start of 3.0" so I guess there will be something to unlock the DRK soulstone that we can do before the actual release, like capping 2-3 jobs. And they only said "greatsword and power of darkness", nothing about its style like being a dodge/parry tank. Tho watching the other DRKs on the series we can expect it to bring a sexy HP pool and the heavy armor makes you think about high defense/parry..
