Selling for ridiculously high amounts

I see this often - people posting stuff for sale at ridiculously high amounts. For example, Peacock ore goes for 5-6K on my server but there is a couple of postings at 100K (same person). Why would people do this?

• It's not advertising that you have the item because it is listed by retainer and I don't think you can find out who owns the retainer.
• Is this a poor man's storage expansion? Put it on the boards for an amount so stupid that it won't sell (hey if it does, bonus) just for the storage.
• Use it as a way to move gil between characters on the same account (why do this? Tax will kill you)
• ...

There are also people hoping for someone to accidentally buy it, I'd wager.

Keep in mind there is no expiration date for posted market board items you have for sale. With that, a lot of the prices that seem ridiculous may not have been at an earlier time in the games development. I know that's not every case but I'd wager there are an awful lot of items up for sale on characters who have long since quit the game.

If a player don't use his retainer for some weeks, the retainer get removed from the market.
But there are also some people who never update their prices.

I second this.
Some people put things up for sale then don't check them for ages too (for undercutters). I check mine normally upon log in and before logging out. It's mental how much the prices can drop in just one-four hours sometimes. You put something up for 5k and suddenly there are 5 or more of the same item later for 500gil.

My mistake I guess, I've taken multiple week breaks from the game and have -never- had an item taken off of my retainers market board. I had several items on the mb for multiple months at times too just out of laziness to update prices. I think my point still stands to some degree however based on my own experience.

There's a sucker born every minute.

It's hard to anticipate, but some items have moments where a drastic buyouts occurs leading to the higher priced items possibly getting bought out.

If a seller isn't trying to dump items as fast as possible then it can be a valid strategy to price an item above average to see if it gets picked up over the weekend. Of course, the example in the OP is very extreme and doesn't really seem likely to fit this strategy.

Could be they posted it when there were no other items for sale thinking someone would be desperate enough to pay that much. Then obv the marketplace filled up and they never took it down.

I always did (still do actually) this as extra storage.

Have had a few things accidentally sell, but I did get some good gil for it so, meh. Just make sure I price it way too high when I really want to keep it

If I "accidentally" sold 10 ores for 10 million gil, I wouldn't shed a tear over it :P

I've seen someone manipulate prices for all kinds of things and cause prices to spike by as much as 100k. People then start listing at the new price and the price crashes back to normal within a matter of hours. You're then left with listings made at fair prices just hours ago that are now 90k above the current norm. That's generally how this happens. Blame people trying to manipulate and fix prices.

I do this all the time. Its an extra 20 slots of storage and if someone does buy them then I can always replace them with the gill i made.

By placing an item up there for a rather large amount lets say 100k, people will start to undercut you slowly if a market sells out up to your item. This can bring an item that is worth 4-5k today up to 40-50k over night.

Its a very common tactic.

Retainers get a large tax write off if their stuff doesn't sell for a long time.

It provides up to 80 slots of additional storage when needed. And if someone actually buys it, major profit.

Used by RMT to transfare gil between toons.

I been thinking that its a great way to store peisteskinmaps. I also send tem as mail to a friend so when we have about 20+ we take a day and just do them all at once

I put my unhidden map on my retainer for sale at 500K which was double the next highest price, so I can have some time to think about when and if I want to use them. After a couple of weeks I forgot about them, and then boom they actually sold. Oh well can't complain there. I bank my peiste maps there for 125K too.
