Simple Solution to BLU

3 Soul Crystals.

Hear me out.

BLU (dps), BLU (healer), & BLU (tank).

Essentially 3 jobs in one.

Each stemming from the same base-class.

Each has different unlockable Job abilities.

Using Greased Lightning as a Faux Example of how to effectively utilize the same class:

GL (dps) - increases damage/skill-speed by x%.
GL (healer) - increases healing/spell-speed by x%.
GL (tank) - increases dodge/enmity-gain by x%.

Personally, I think PGL is a fitting base-class for BLU though a new one could be created.

Note: though perhaps 2-in-1 with no tank option makes the most sense for BLU... too bad we don't have "True Supports".

You know thematically BLU's are meant to wear many hats b/c of their vast array of creature abilities (traditionally), right?

Additionally, SE's concern with BLU is giving one Job too many actions... this' a fine solution.

Seems kind of unbalanced, having a job that can essentially be any role. And either the job has like triple the amount of spells to accomodate this, or each of its roles has very limited options.

Is Blue Mage its own class, or does it stem from an existing one?

I can see this working for BLU split into 2 for DPS and Healer, Healer gets moves like Angel Whisper to revive people and an AoE heal White Wind with a potency increase depending on your current HP (like Spirits Within for PLD) among others. DPS has a huge plethora of abilities for SE to choose from, not mention shared utility spells such as Magic Hammer to regain MP and Frog Song for the optional CC

So yeah I think its a good solution for putting BLU into FFXIV

My apologies, I had an error during posting & didn't realize I didn't copy-paste the entire post.

Think SCH/SMN but with a third job. Same base-class, certain class actions & traits may have different effects depending on equipped job (see example in OP), & different job-specific actions.

Wouldn't be imbalanced b/c it's *technically* 3 separate jobs.

For this to work most efficiently they need to link stat allocations to the jobs so we're not always having to respec (which frankly they need to do for SCH/SMN already anyways).

Blue Mage (and probably Red Mage) are likely to be on hold until we get actual spec tree's. I can see Blue Mage going the way of Druid, and Red Mage going the way of Shaman. This could aslo open up things like, SMN (our current one but more boom) SCH(same) and Evoker(fight with Carbuncle and be more status effect/dot based). Using actual spec tree's would probably make things a lot better >_>. Just let Stat accollation be independent between specs.

Ok, my idea for Blue Mage is this. Class, Magus, dps/support (IE like Bard). Some One Handed Scimitars, Some attack blade skills and a series of "Enchant Weapon with Element/Effect" skills. Blue Mage, no "Learn" as that just won't work here. Instead make an attack based on each of the beastmen races, no necessarily attacks they actually know, instead sort of skills that embody the race. Ifrit's own grand a momentary boost to attack power, Garudia's children grant an AoE sleep spell, exc. Maybe not that but like it you know.

And the only thing that matters is that the job learns skill from monsters. That's all it needs to be a blue mage. Everything else, and I do mean everything else (scimitars, middle eastern aesthetic, pointy shoes, role flexibility, skill sets, gear choices) is essentially fluff.

I agree. Learning from monsters could be resolved in the Class/Job quests.

Blue Mages have taken many different forms across the FF-multiverse, ultimately you're correct--all that matters is the learning of creature actions.

Heck, BLU could even come from LNC (Kimahri).

I have a better idea: make Blue Mages a DPS job that also branches off from the Arcanist class.

Except in this case, replace the whole pet thing, and instead, whenever you use the "Summon" skill, you make the Pet Hotbar appear for you to choose any Blue Magick you've learned (through something like, say, the Blue Mage's first job skill), depending on what "Summon" you used, like "Summon I" for attacks and "Summon II" for support skills.
The other skills it could learn through Job quests could be things that could help enhance any skills it has learned or something.

Would it really matter?

All 3 roles within a single class after all HAS been done before. It has been a long time since I played world of warcraft, so I'm completely unsure whether it currently still applies. However, Paladins there could be Protection (Tank), Holy (Heal) or Retribution (DPS). They have the trinity within the single class. Was Paladin the only class played due to it? Not quite.

Plus really by the time that a blue mage would be introduced, does it still matter for a person to have a tank, heal and dps within a single class? Is it not like we already have all those roles on a single character anyway?

I've always imagined, and would much rather BLU function with abilities that count as a tier of enemy abilities/spells. With that ability you can select from a batch of abilities/spells that you've learned that fall within that tier. This is how every BLU ability would work, with more powerful abilities being reserved to the higher tier.

Not really digging the multiple soul crystals for each job thing. Seems like an awkward way to implement things.

No, they certainly were not the only class played. Retribution PLD was fun as hell, btw. I really like the idea of 3 soul crystals. Using the current base classes for a start, archaist gets 2 soul stones. Other classes will probably get more as well.

I do not think, however, that if the class is 50, that all 3 soul stone jobs should be 50 off the bat. U should have to level them all.

kinda cool except u don't summon anything as a BLU.

I wonder if we should be talking about this pre-Fanfest, as Fanfest will likely be going over some of the changes between 2.X and 3.0, and many of those changes could directly affect how Jobs work. I, for one, would like to see some changes, namely on things like weapon exclusivity and Soul Crystals causing complications.

I think the easiest way to impliment BLU would be to first start with a base class that can mimic foes' abilities but does not need the RNG mechanic of possibly learning an ability by witnessing it.

For example, something like 'Savage' as a base class, which learns abilities by killing monsters and consuming or absorbing their power to evolve. Once a Savage has killed a certain number of the necessary enemy (like a Hunting Log), they learn to mimic it.

Another idea would be Tactician or Magus, which would be more mage-like and able to study the behaviors of monsters in order to utilize their abilities.

The class would depend on how they want to "theme" Blue Mage as a job as to whether it would be more beastly or more "mage".

Blue Mage as a job would then be the base class learning to harness and control the most powerful and primal of beast abilities withouy becoming a monster themselves. They could also possibly be able to augment of amplify exisiting class abilities.

As for the abilities themselves, the base Class could unlock blank ability slots at the same increments as other classes. Learned abilities could then be attuned to these slots, but would have a level range to limit them. For example, if Bomb Toss is a level 20 ability, it cannot be slotted in a level 2 slot, only in a 20+ slot.

Blue Mage would also have to possibly juggle both MP and TP based on the types of abilities they are using.

Overall, it would be a DPS class but with flexibility in melee/ranged and physical/magical damage output.

its an interesting idea, though I think I rather some of the other thoughts on BLU then this one. BLU should be one soul, DPS with a couple healing/defensive abilities it can set.
I think they should have a "whatever the class is called" special hunt log, that lists ALL learnable abilities (and the level they're usable as well as the earliest you can learn it [ie can only be 3 levels below the level to learn it, can learn it any level higher but if you're closer to the creature's level you'll have a better chance to learn it])

When I was designing my idea for Blue Mage, I had originally thought about having three separate jobs but then you would have to have a lot of abilities with different effects to cover all necessary things each role needs, which could lead to a lot of unused abilities or some OP combinations, like a Tank with high level healing abilities, a Healer with great DPS, etc.

As I said in a previous post if it can be done in FFXI and that game is 12 years old then I'm quite sure it can easily be done in FFXIV and go the same route.... put limits on what the job can do. If you set certain amount of spells you can gain job traits. I'm pretty sure they won't have him out curing SCH and WHM or putting out more DPS with a single spell. I'm really pushing to see this job come to FFXIV

Instead of soul crystals, why not just have various stances like defiance or cleric's stance (but for blue mage). Maybe just make it so it's not something you can change on the fly. If they're gonna go that route with BLU, that is.

Another idea is to just make a decision on what role BLU is ultimately going to fulfill and tailor monster abilities accordingly. For example, white wind is generally a healing spell, but if it seems too OP to give a dps an AOE heal then perhaps change it to a buff (such as healing speed/potency increased for a short time). That's just off the top of my head but I'm sure someone could come up with a better change for it.

By the way, I would think that the 'class' for Blue Mage would be Mime, or Mimic. They could use a whip I guess?

Stances & swappable spells wouldn't work bc SE doesn't want ability-bloat (stances give access to all-in-one albeit limited to sets of spells) & they want rigid balance (they'd have to balance around every combination of spells if selecting from a list).

It uses the current system, it doesn't cause ability-bloat (which' SE's concern), nor does it require new tech be developed.

It's literally just 2 or 3 jobs, it's like how thru created SCH/SMN..........

FFXIV can make BLU however they want, just because you're relegated to one role-specific set of monster-learned skills at a time doesn't make it not a BLU.

why not? we do job quests at 30+ to learn new abilities, i see a small trial against certain foes to learn the skills they have, fits in with what we currently have

i.e. BLU (healer) 30 Angel Whisper, 35 White Wind.. and so on

I don't particularly like the idea of several soul crystals tbh. I think there are other ideas thrown around that would be better, but if its a choice between three soul crystals or no BLU, sure go for it.

I can see this system working but I would prefer it would be within one unit of a job, and like FFXI (oh no dirty words lol) make a special system for Blue Mage (slotting system).

Like for Blue Mage I hope they don't get stuck in their class and job structure, trying to make everything fit when it could benefit greatly being 'different' (as much as I like keeping systems neat and tidy, I see SE's current system verging impossible for certain Jobs people want - without making special exceptions).

Still, your system could work.. so no hate here - just my preference for the Blue Mage to be contained within one unit :P

Well, let's see how NIN turns out...since NIN is supposed to "Not play like any of the other classes", "Not your typical job" and " NIN DOTs aren't like other DOTs."

And with mudra....We can come to the conclusion that Ninja may possibly have more abilities than the other jobs have right now. So, let's see how that plays out...maybe that'll give a clearer image of how BLU could be.

But, I don't think 3 soul crystals would ever be the route, nor do I think it should be. That would mean you can't switch between them during battle, so if you needed to cover for someone as a Healer coming from DD or Tank mode, you wouldn't be able to...which would defeat the purpose of a "hybrid class."

Why not jsut make BLU spells like PvP skills where you get a certain amount of points and you just pick which abilities you want? That way you can collect all the monsters skill, but still only able to use a limited amount at one time.

That's pretty much how Blue Mage was in FFXI, with spells having an associated cost. Also, job traits were created based on the combinations of equipped BLU spells.

What a mature response. Your entire concept goes against the concept of Blue Mage. Blue Mage is supposed to be highly versatile and utilize abilities learned from enemies. To narrow your options down to three generic roles completely goes against the concept of Blue Mage.

Which would then go against the concept of ARR as a whole unless you implement mitigating circumstances to not allow them to do everything and anything at once
