As the title states, it'd be nice to be able to use whatever mount we wish, even with our chocobo summoned.
It's particularly annoying when paired with the Draught chocobo...

They should do this and make it so we can queue while having our companion out. If I can queue with my Ifrit-Egi or Eos, why cant I do it with my chocobo?
Minor workaround
/micon "Unicorn" mount
/mount "Unicorn"
/mount "Company Chocobo"
Since we have so many mounts to choose from and only the company chocobo can be leveled, I propose a glamour option for the company chocobo. We can ride our favorite mount and level up/fight with it at our side.
You are advocating that SE implement a glamour for our companion chocobo that effectively changes its appearance to other non-chocobo mounts? o.O That just sounds silly honestly, much more reasonable to ask that the other mounts be made into companions as well, though even that takes away from the cool vibe of having a companion chocobo imo.
You can use this:
/macroicon "Mount Roulette"
/ac "Mount Roulette"
/mount "Company Chocobo"
Nah, no more sillier than the current gear glamour system at hand: snowman headed tanks in nightgowns, bikini clad mages, Santa Claus and reindeer headed dps...in the dungeons or fighting in the opening world...the list goes on.
Everything is silly in the appropriate philosophical light.
What they should've done in the first place is allow any mount to be your companion and give all the mounts the same generic companion skills. That way you could choose any mount who could also serve as a companion and all would have the same skills. Right now it's pretty unfair the advantage chocobos have over other mounts because the chocobo is the only one that can be a mount and a companion at the same time. Also, having the chocobo as a companion doesn't even allow to cast other mounts. The way it is now, the system pretty much favours the chocobos over any other mount. And I freaking hate the look of chocobos.
But chocobo is one of the big symbols of Final Fantasy license, so I feel totally normal he is our favorite companion, like in many others FF :)
I still feel it's unfair...I mean, there's a reason why all mounts have the same travel speed, if there was one mount that traveled faster than the others, it would trivialize the rest of the mounts. Well, this kinda happens with the chocobo right now, except for the fact it doesn't travel faster but has numerous advantages other mounts.
But the lore of the game doesn't consider them pets. Even the official site says:
Nowhere on any official FFXIV site have I seen them refer to a chocobo as a pet, but a companion and comrade. A comrade is a fellow soldier, a partner. Coming from 1.0 and the lore as I understand it, here is an intelligent being that waited years, searching for their comrades return. When we did return in 2.0, they were there to stand by our side and fight with us once again. I don't think I could ever consider that simply a pet. Fellow warrior, an ally, a friend. Yes. But never a pet.Quote:
When a fellow adventurer's helping hand is nowhere to be found, there are still dependable comrades you may turn to. Fight side by side with your trusty chocobo
Now in the game there is a pet, and a pet bar to control them. Those are the summons that Arcanist, Summoner and Scholar can use.
As for the main point of this thread...
I was just happy when they finally made it to where you could mount your chocobo while you had it summoned. I also appreciate that they tossed in something extra with it. When training your chocobo you get 30 minutes per food. If you mount your chocobo during that time, it stop the counter, so you get 30 minutes of active training time that isn't shortened by travel time as well.
But the only time this issue of not being able to ride another mount comes into play is when someone is training their chocobo, the rest of the time players can use any mount they want. So one might call it the cost of having a fighting companion by one's side that fights, and heals the players character. Plus with people having two mounts out at the same time, that would add massive data to the servers because it would be rendering a lot more. SE already is crying 'technical limitations' one year in due to servers, I don't know if they are going to want to add a heavier load to that.
But if SE feels they could do it, then that would be up to them to decide.
Now if this is about wanting to use a favorite mount, wouldn't it be better to ask them to allow leveling of the mount of players choosing? Players can pick ONE mount to level, just like a chocobo. And this ONE mount would be your fighting companion. But then again, and I think people know this, favorites change at a whim. If/When SE presents a new mount, then comes the 'but why can't we change mounts and move the stats, because this one is my favorite now'.
I believe that is why they chose one mount that players can level and chose the Chocobo to be this companion. It is highly recognized and an icon of FF lore. Personally my chocobo is my favorite, and I adore him. Even if I'm not training him, he is the one I ride because he's my comrade. But that is just me.
As for the glamouring of a mount, I'd have to agree with others. Glamouring our clothes is one thing, but making a whole animal look like something else is a totally different thing. I don't know if I can agree with that one.
Seems like it would be awfully crowded if they implemented something like this, riding your mount , chocobo at your flank and a pet trailing behind, hell make it so minions can be summoned too so you can have a whole freaking farm
And now we can really customize our chocobo with lots of bardings, many colors. Before dying I used to summon my unicorn but now it's only my BlackChoc' ^^
I agree with the solution to choose which mount could be our "favorite" and so our companion. But I can't believe that a blue horse who tries to heal you would really be in the FF lore ... x)
Yes please. Mount roulette should still work if the choco is summoned.
In my opinion, chocobo companion was totally botched as a feature. It's bad enough that you can't enter DF queue, summon a minion, or use other mounts while chocobo is out -- but the fact that initially you could not mount at all is a joke. Not to mention, there used to be no way to reset skill points at all. Why even bother releasing it, in that state? The fact that they fixed it later essentially just means they could have made it that way from the start, but hastily pushed the feature out the door unfinished and neglected it til later. Even today, I feel like we are using a broken "beta version" of chocobo companion.
I mean, even if you're already in a DF queue and you summon the companion, there is no warning before kicking you out of the queue. How hard is it to make a simple text box prompt? The lack of even this tiny consideration demonstrates complete apathy toward the value of players' time. After all, it works the opposite way -- if you have the choco companion out and try to enter DF, a text warning pops up preventing you from queuing until you manually dismiss. Apparently, auto-dismissing chocobo companion is unacceptable to the developers, but there's no concern whatsoever when booting players from a DF queue they've been waiting in for maybe 40+ minutes. Maybe they see it as gaining 40 minutes of subscription time..??
If the result of their "companion" system was going to end up like this, I would have rather they made the chocobo function like the arcanist/summoner creatures. At least you can issue commands to them directly, and they don't interfere with any other game mechanics. The game even knows to auto-dismiss them when entering a dungeon, for crying out loud!
Eorzeans train and selectively breed Chocobos like we do horses or dogs.
Treating them as domesticated animals is therefore fully supported by the lore and there is 0 reason to treat them as "another player" as the games mechanics currently do.
Also: I am talking about game mechanic changes and not fundamental lore conflicts or retcons (waves at Blizzard).
Lore has 0 influence on that, this is mainly UI/convenience and lore should NEVER be a reason to have a crappy UI / conflicting features (e.g.: can't queue for a dungeon because Chocobo / can't be invited to party because Chocobo / can't ride other mount because Chocobo).
How many partners/fellows/comrades do you keep in a stable, expect to show up immediately when called, and ride around on? And since when do comrades demand you not ride any other mounts in their presence? I'm pretty sure a fellow soldier and partner would enter a dungeon with me, too.
There are two reasons why you can only mount your chocobo when you have your chocobo companion summoned. The first is that your companion and you share a trusting relationship and therefore you’d want to ride on their back when you are adventuring together.
The second reason is that we’ve made it so companions and mounts are not displayed at the same time because we’re giving consideration to stress that the servers handle when displaying a large amount of characters.
In the event that we made it possible to summon both a companion and a mount at the same time, it would affect the number of characters displayed. While there wouldn’t be much of a change with one or two people doing this, we have designed this system giving consideration to the fact that there would be densely populated areas within an MMORPG.
Therefore, when riding on a mount, your companion disappears, and when you dismount it would reappear from nowhere, so we’ve currently made it so you can only mount your chocobo. However, if there are no issues with this seemingly strange occurrence, it would not be difficult to lift the limitation on other mounts.
We’re considering at the moment whether it would be better to follow the lore and maintain the current system or if it would be better to allow players to freely use the mounts they like when using a companion. I can’t give a specific time for when the decision will be made, but we would like to see your feedback on the matter, so please continue to discuss this topic.
I have an idea...
Why not automatically mount us on the chocobo while our choco companion is summoned? No matter what mount we press, that way it will make ppl not have to switch the mount out in the hotbar or dig through the mount guide menu to summon another mount?
You can get this effect with a macro. Start with a line to summon your favorite mount or mount roulette, followed by a line to mount your chocobo. If the first command is available, that will take precedence and the chocobo line won't (as you'll be busy summoning a different mount), but if the first command fails (due to having your chocobo companion out), then you'll mount the chocobo.
It would look something like this:
/micon "Unicorn" mount
/mount "Unicorn"
/mount "Company Chocobo"
(For when in areas that don't allow mounts, you could also add a line at the end for:
/ac "Sprint"
but if you do that, you should probably change the /micon to Sprint as well, in order to see the cooldown.)
Um... I don't remember off hand what the macro command is for Mount Roulette, but I know there is one if you want that in place of the Unicorn example I gave.
Like Vahn, I think it would be nice just to have the chocobo mounted no matter the mount button pressed (or dismounted no matter the button pressed). If you can mount another while your chocobo is out, wouldn't they try to defend you like Summoner's egis do? That might be a problem, Chocobo off in the boontoolies thanks to monsters pulling aggro.
If they don't defend you then they will feel like bad companions, so you're stuck with losing them all the time (like Summoner Egi) or having them be bad friends like Mario and Yoshi :P.
My real companion is my Legacy chocobo, it spent 5 five years looking for me and we have lots of memories together!
Why can't I use my Legacy chocobo (or apply the skin to my current companion) to fight together?
The lore is stronger with the Legacy chocobo, it should happen. ^^
The lore, correct me if I'm wrong, says the Legacy chocobo is my chocobo from 1.0 - shouldn't he just have a /legacymark command like I do and then make the legacy armor a barding option?
I know it is very low priority in terms of things to do but.. I don't know why my 1.0 Chocobo is and is not my 2.0 Chocobo XD. I'd like to ride and fight besides my real 1.0 boco >.> lol
I could live with either of these, though I would prefer the first option. think about it this way when we summon any mount to ride our minion disappears, then reappears when we let them go. why not the same for our companion chocobo?
I would like this myself
Please let us fight while mounted lolz
I could live with this. I mean it already works with the mount roulette button.
For example, I don't have individual mount icons on my hot bar. I use the mount roulette instead.
If my chocobo companion is out and I need want to mount, I press the mount roulette button and I mount the chocobo companion.
If my chocobo companion is not out and I press the mount roulette button, I will mount whichever mount pops up~
they should let us summon our minions while our chocobo is out like really
