Well...
You might put regen on the tank at the conclusion of a fight and you might buff everyone with stoneskin before each fight, but during the fight itself, your actions are pretty much based upon who takes how much damage...
ok thats what i thought.... i have never been a healer ever so this is all new to me
You see health bar that isn't full and you make it full.
When it comes to the basics that's all there is to it.
But don't get obssessive with 100%... 80%-90% will do in most cases. It wastes MP.
As an experienced WHM I have to say I found this guide to be somewhat rubbish. Cleric Stance and Holy have 0/5 utility and should never be used in a party??? That's ridiculous.
I usually cast Regen on the tank and then use Cleric Stance + Presence of Mind + Holy on big groups of adds and it does the job every time. A good WHM should heal when they must and switch to DPS to help the party when appropriate.
So my advice is, when you are still on lower levels, focus on healing. A WHM's best spell for me is Regen and should be used a lot once you get it (just wait until your tank has aggro before you cast it). But when you reach higher levels and feel more comfortable in your role, I think it's important that you use your attacking skills too. A high level WHM with good weapon/gear and Cleric Stance on is no slouch when it comes to attacking.
This is terrible advice that will lead to one of two things:
1. Your death
2. Making the tank have to work much harder.
You want to put regen up at the START of a fight. If you put it up at the end, then it will likely still be up when the tank approaches the next set of mobs. And then all the mobs will come straight for you when that regen ticks, because the tank hasn't had a chance to establish hate on all mobs yet. So again, when you get Regen at 35, NEVER use it at the end of a fight. HP raises very fast when out of battle, or if u need to get the tank up before the next set, just use cure.
At level 22, healing is incredibly easy. You don't even have Stoneskin or Regen to worry about yet. Figure out how much your cure heals for, and don't heal the tank until he needs the full heal. I found it very boring actually, till I discovered the magic that is stance dancing. WHM can actually do pretty respectable damage when in Cleric Stance. So if you find yourself bored, or really want to impress your party, pop Cleric Stance (when its safe, ie: the start of a fight) and go to town with aero/stone. Make sure you take it off when you need to heal again. Then at 50, WHM can easily be the top dps against trash mobs in dungeons. Fun times. :)
OP and any other new healers, please IGNORE THE HELL out of that link. Don't even click it if you can help it. Cleric Stance and Holy are amazing skills. I guess I should thank guides like that. Almost every time I run a dungeon someone comments how they wish more WHM would dps like me.
Yea the regen comment might have been a troll. Regen will pull all aggro to you when the tank pulls if it is still ticking down. If you land stoneskin right when the tank pulls the same will happen, then comes the O'sheet moments from tank and yourself. Lower level it's not that bad but higher up it can be problematic.
Stoneskin when you first enter the duty. For pulls at your level consider Clerics > Aero > Stone > repeat till tank needs a heal > Clerics off > Cure, rinse and repeat. The earlier you get used to how stance dancing works the better you will be in the long run and the more you will contribute to your runs.
You don't want to be that WHM that just stands there with their stick in their hands....heh. Do something. If no heals are needed, DPS.
What Odd said above is spot on.
Regen at the end of a fight? LOL no. All that does is make the enemies aggro the healer on the next pull if Regen hasn't worn off.
Regen is used at the start of the fight, but only after the tank has aggro.
thank you all for the info i didnt mean to star i toll fest lol but i will take everyones insties to heart and try them out and see what works for me, since i stared as a DPS i thing the dance will be ez enough its just making sure i change back in time to heal lol
At Lv.22 CNJ, you shouldn't have much to worry about. You don't have many tools yet and dungeons are still fairly easy. Get a feel for how much you need to Cure your tanks and maybe start getting a feel for when's a safe time to swap into Cleric Stance to help DPS, if you're interested in helping that way. I know plenty of healers who prefer to heal onry.
For DPS'ing, it's just keep Aero and Aero 2 up, Fluid Aura when it's up (and when it won't piss off melees), and spam Stone 2. Or spam Holy if it's a like a mob of 3+.
For healing, in general it's about knowing your priorities and making judgment calls, and WHMs need to be more careful in their judgment than SCHs. We have to be a lot more aware of our MP and enmity management. Aside from that, you can play purely on reaction and still be a decent healer; but if you know your fights well, you can respond to things preemptively or lay off of cures and let regens do the work.
Regarding what all of the people before me are saying about Regen, it's like this (and this is pretty important to understand for mobs and any boss fight that spawns adds):
Say you facepull a mob and their names are all in orange. This means you're on their enmity list so they want to kill you. The rest of your party isn't even on their radar (unless it's a boss fight) because they haven't done anything to the mob or you, so they could stroll on ahead and leave you to die if they wanted (this is the reason why "sac-pulling" works) and raise you once they're in a safe spot on the other side.
If you buff or heal yourself, their names turn red and you generate enmity for buffing/healing, and -bonus- enmity for being the first person to make them red.
If it were the tank who facepulled without using any skills (mob is all orange) and you had a leftover Regen on the tank, then as soon as your Regen ticks and heals the tank, you'd generate enmity for 1) healing and 2) being the first to make them red. So not only would you have aggro of everything, it'd be harder for the tank to pull everything off of you than if the tank had been the one to make the mob red.
So be aware of how long your Regen/Medica2 will last, and be especially careful if your tank isn't as well-geared as you are.
General tips:
- Cure 2 is NOT your primary healing skill. Rely on Cure 1's, and use Cure 2's when you get a free proc or when it's honestly an emergency to get the target's health back up faster. It's a tremendous waste of MP if you use C2's only.
- Regen makes your life easier. You almost always want to keep it up on the tank so that you won't have to Cure as often or as urgently, giving you more time to DPS or handle other stuff. Aside from that, you can use it while dodging, and if you know whoever you used it on isn't going to get hurt much, you can get away with not even casting Cure at all.
- Esuna exists. Get used to recognizing debuff icons in the party list, and don't be the healer who lets me sit through the full duration of Paralyze3 in TamTara-HM.
- Don't use Stoneskin during combat as a replacement for cures. It's too expensive for that. Stoneskin if you have time outside of combat, if you want. Otherwise in combat, Stoneskin is only useful in some endgame situations, like Death Sentence in T5, and Ravensbeak in T9.
- Healing in a full party should feel about the same as healing in a light party, so don't panic at seeing how much more damage a tank takes and spam C2's. You have a co-healer, and if they have a pulse, they should be healing.
- Shroud of Saints sheds half of your enmity. It's pretty important to remember it does this, and to watch your enmity levels on the enemy list--the one with stuff like the blue-green square, yellow and orange triangles, and red square. Blue-green means you're low on enmity, so you're safe. Orange means you're pretty high, and if it starts flashing, that means you're very close to pulling aggro. Red means you have aggro.
- It's highly recommended to level Thaumaturge to Lv.26 for Swiftcast. Swiftcast-Raise is immensely helpful later, and depending on the content you play, you could find other uses for Swiftcast as well.
Your weapon's magic damage affects how big your cures are the most. If you're curious about how much other stats matter for your heals, go play with this:

ok thank you so much that was very helpful
As someone who mains a tank, please don't use Fluid Aura at all in dungeons. ☺
However, feel free is cast respose on mobs that aren't getting actively hit.!
Okay, I'll play.
HP regens VERY fast when out of combat. So I'm guessing what you do, is put it up at the end of a fight and watch the tank fill up in 3 seconds? Then stand there for 20 seconds while it ticks down? Or have all mobs come straight for you when he engages more? Or have the tank click it off himself before engaging the next set? All of those scenarios are bad. You say they work for you, but they don't work for a light party or full party. If you're soloing, fine, put up regen when out of combat, when HP regens super fast anyways.
What if another WHM came in here and said he only uses cure when the tank is at 100% hp, and then you accused him of trolling? And his defense was "It works for me", what then? Would you support his idea? Or would you tell him what he's doing is BAD and then warn all people trying to learn WHM to disregard his advice?
Due to your steadfast support of putting up Regen at the end of a fight, you're clearly not trolling. So I apologize for saying you were. But you're also wrong. Regen at the end of a fight is doing absolutely nothing. My Regen ticks for around 500 hp without divine seal. That's a total healing power of around 3500 HP for the 21 second duration. With Divine Seal, it's more like 5000 hp healed. In level 50 dungeons, with an over geared group (almost always), all you need to do is put a Divine Seal Regen on the tank (at the start), and then begin Holy Spam. Due to the stun effect, the tanks HP will actually be going UP while you dps. And if you're the type of WHM who doesn't dps, then you'd be better off not using regen at all, over using it at the end of a fight.
