You have to feed them until you get a message like, "[Name] has started growing new feathers!" It's pretty RNG-based on how many fruit it will take.
So fruit doesn't always change feathers even though it keeps saying wait 6 hours? Wtf
You need to feed him fruit until you get the message that he's "beginning to growing new feathers", or something to that effect. A single fruit will make the game prompt you that their plumage will change in six hours, but there will be no physical change without the message explicitly stating the new feathers are growing in.
You have to feed it until you see the message "Your chocobo is beginning to grow a new Plume feather" I think(can't remember the exact message).
you don't have to wait 6h between 2 feeds, fedd you chocobo till you get the "grow new feather" msg =>wait 6h=> enjoy your new color chocobo.
You can also use multiple fruits, even different fruits within the 6 hours window, even if you already got the "is beginning to grow new feathers" message.
Takes 6 hours per change yeah - Also it can take quite a lot of fruit regardless if it says it begins growing new feathers etc. They made it pretty 'complex' to allow people to have multiple colors rather than the classic red/blue/yellow/green/dark blue/gold/white/black.
So when it says 6 hours I shouldn't feed it again but it only randomly actually changes? Because I've been through this twice now with the waiting
Any time you feed the chocobo it starts a 6 hour timer till when any change would take place, regardless of whether or not you actually fed it enough to make it change. You need to keep feeding it the fruits to make it your desired color until you see "(Chocobo) is growing new feathers!" in the chat box after a feed. That's the indicator that you've fed it enough to kick it into a new color range. You can either try to keep feeding it for more intense color results (a single message will likely only result in a very slight change in color, like Desert Yellow > Millioncorn Yellow, etc) or you can wait the timer out and see where you stand before proceeding.
you can feed it anytime within the 6 hours as well
Anyone feed thier choco 30+ fruit and still not got a message about the feathers changing? Starting to think I may be bugged :(
Me! This just happened to me. Got on this morning to check most recent dye job but not a damn change.
I was at Honey Yellow (ew gross in my opinion!)
I began with pears and after 31 I thought hmmm this is odd not one message. I finished off the remaining pears I had(40~) despite the feeling I was throwing gil away. No growing feathers and no plummage will change message either.
Is it possible with the 2002 & 90000 errors that occurred lastnight somehow things messed up? Logged in and didn't receive CS either. What gives?
Ya mines been stuck at raptor blue since I logged in last night after the 2002 error. I have feed 10 berries, 20 plums and 8 valfruit and not got one message or the cs when I logged on last night.
Stuck at Apple Green. I have given it 5 of each lightening food 3 times now and nothing, still apple green. The amount of money im pissing away is getting annoying.
It could be that Honey Yellow have a Pears cap, because more green could be make the color more yellow and Honey Yellow have the highest yellow available currently.
How many "new feathers are growing" messages got you?
Also it is the best to feed only 1 or 2 type of fruits each time or it can be like 3 step foreward and 3 step backward.
After apple green DON'T feed it more pears. Apple is the deepest green you can get. I put a lot of pears into it with no change. Luckily fishing has made me my money back.
None, that's the problem. Since Apple Green, I have not gotten anymore "new feathers are growing" messages. I have not fed it anymore pears either. After apple green I tried giving it berries, nothing. So then the last few times I gave it plum, valfruit and pineapple. I see what you are saying with the 1 or 2 types only, I will do that from now on. But I still thought I should see some kind of change.

That has most of the colours and what snacks are needed for each one
That sheet is defunct and not accurate. Don't use it. There are some better ones out there such as:

i threw about 500k into my chocobo get get desert yellow, i almost cried
Then you got very lucky and more than likely wasted gil and fruit. I helped with creating that sheet when the dyeing system was first patched in. We knew nothing about how it worked while creating it. Since then, better research has been done and getting the desired colors that we want have been mapped out. People can dye their chocobos more efficiently and less expensively.
Turns out another rng feature? Haven't complain anything until now, but it seems every new thing have rng attached. I'm ok with things that require work to do, but at least have results in exchange.
I thought it was once per 6 hours too. They should really clarify this. Now I'm gonna stuff my chocobo full of snacks till he is as fat as my fat chocobo :P
Only if you don't know a good color planner.
There are already some in progress

You can feed multiple fruits after the first one sets the timer and it DOESNT reset the timer within those 6 hours. You just need to get the right amount of 'has started growing new feathers message.'
The original spreadsheet linked above is NOT accurate, as that was done under the assumption that x amount of fruits gives a certain colour, but it's since been realised that the growing new feathers message is the key. That spreadsheet will only work if you got the same amount of messages that the person who gave that 'recipe' got from feeding those fruits.
