I've seen this confusion so many times that, since here i can also post topics regarding english version discussions, i thought it would be worth posting.
Is there any chance of we having GLD (goldsmith) change to GSM, to match BSM (blacksmith) abreviation and avoid confusion regarding GLA (gladiator)?
having GLA and GLD actually fitting gladiator as abriviation is not only troublesome for discussions (sometimes we don't really know if the player is talking about one with the wrong abreviation or the other) but also is problematic regarding armor affinity...afterall pretty much no armor other than "All Classes" ones really fit both classes, what makes a mistakenly bought armor not being usable at all.

What I think would be the least confusing out of any of this mess is having small symbols or images which represent each class. A lot of other MMOs do that, I think.
But for now, I think I'd prefer goldsmith being GSM as well. -

Greetings one and all,
I apologize for not responding to this issue right away. I wanted to see where the discussion went before chiming in...and by the looks of it, I'd say that most of you wholeheartedly approve of a change to the abbreviations.
Since the same three-letter abbreviations are used in the JP client as well, we cannot simply go in a change the English and be done with it. If a change is going to happen, it needs to be OK'd by the producer, and then every instance of it in the (spread out over several files) will need to be updated in both the EN and JP clients, and then checked by our QA teams (to make sure we caught all instances of GLD, and that we didn't accidentally write GMS!). Needless to say, it will probably be quite the task, and will all the other things on our plate right now (patch 1.19, Yoshi-P's road map, etc.) I am uncertain when we will have the time to address this issue right away.
HOWEVER! The EN Localization team thinks this a great suggestion, and will relay it to the rest of the team in hopes that they will agree with us (and you!), and add the change to the list of things to do. Once I have an update on the situation, I'll post here again. Until then, keep your fingers crossed! -

Its odd tho...i thought JP version used the kanji names instead of abreviations (played a few JP version FFs)...but if it also involves the JP version things might be a bit more complex than i expected. Well, hope is always the last one to die! ^^ Hopefully Yoshida can approve thiis change before PS3 release so we can prevent the newcomers from that version having the very same issue we are having right now. ^^ -

Although GSM seems funny because of it's RL usage, I'd still like to see a change from the current GLA and GLD. Both can be easily understood as gladiator and GLD=goldsmith comes into mind only after that. I only noticed the difference after I was crafting goldsmith tools for the first time. *^^*

It seem everything is hard to deal with in FFXIV even changing a name title of a class. They should have come up with a system that if you change the main file to GSM it would just change everything in the game too that for that class,item, and s o on.

it makes it super confusing when talking to anyone I mix this up all the time and this is coming from someone who has 38 goldsmith and 43 gladiator! FFS

GSM = Goldsmith, this was confusing for many players who originated from FFXI, and in turn makes it confusing for new players because some of us veterans refer to it as GSM instead of GLD lol
Also, tbh I think either GLA or GLD is ok for Gladiator, GLA being the first 3 letters, and GLD sounds like PLD (which is really all they are good for anyways!)

GLD should definitely be changed to GSM. Everyone calls it a GSM anyways lol. Either GLA or GLD would work for gladiator. But like Archadius said, GLD could be confused for PLD when it comes out, so GLA would be best.

It's silly, but I like GLD better for Gladiator, since you can sort of pronounce it as "Glad", as opposed to pronouncing it as "Glah". Gladiator = GLA (no change)
Goldsmith = GSM (changed from GLD, because of similarity to Gladiator)
Leatherworker = LTW (changed from TAN, thanks Enyyx!)

Activity names differ from the class names, but Gladiator isn't SWD and Weaver isn't CTH, so Leatherworker being TAN had to go; it was just an oversight. (LTW doesn't exactly fit what looks to be the pattern, either, but more on that later). Let's move on.
Simply put:
If we're going to fix a few, anyway, why not just standardize it so it's not so convoluted?
We've seen "Use the first three letters,"
We've seen "Drop the vowels and use the first three letters,"
We've seen "Drop the vowels and skip some letters."
And until 1.19, we've seen "Use the abbreviation for the activity instead."
Currently, we have:
Pugilist - PGLST - PGL
Marauder - MRDR - MRD
Lancer - LNCR - LNC
Thaumaturge - THMTRG - THM
Archer (Leave the initial letter for identification) ARCHR - ARC
--------------------------------------------------
Alchemist (Leave the initial letter for identification) ALCHMST - ALC
Armorer (Leave the initial letter for identification) ARMR - ARM

Weaver - WVR - WVR

If we're fixing the first one, why not just fix them all? Most of all, why stick with GLA? Is it because Gladiator suddenly becoming GLD when it's been Goldsmith for so long might cause some confusion, at first? Or is it just easier on the spreadsheet editing? I understand both approaches, but in the long run it seems to be less than ideal, like we're settling.
If we fixed everything, we'd end up with some pretty big differences. Are they not for the better? For instance, we'd see:
Conjurer - CNJRR - CNJ
Gladiator - GLDTR - GLD
Miner - MNR - MNR
Leatherworker - LTHRWRKR - LTH
Is there a problem with this, so far? If so, can we throw it out there so people stop asking? Moving onto the final, and most challenging, aspect: Our justifiable exceptions.

That even paves the way for Gladiator to take it's rightful place upon the Throne of ...GLA? --- Wait, what? I know it'd be a rough start, but we ALL called it GLD before we were trained to call it GLA - we can do it again.

I'm all good with the changes. LTW is fine just like GSM, because its actually 2 words in one. In both cases its taking 1 letter from 1 word and the other from the other word. IMO they don't need to change everything...just what turned to be an ingame issue like GLD was. I always called Leatherworker as LW and goldsmith GS so its not really a problem (at least to me) just having a middle letter here.
