Mamook Pears- like... from MAMOOK?

I had casually glanced over this earlier and was grabbing some seeds when it hit me.

Mamook was the name of the Mamool Ja capitol in FFXI!

We haven't heard of Mamook in FFXIV before have we? I was wondering how it fits into the world of Hydaelyn. Is it their capital this time around? Where is it located? (or if the Mamook Pears are secretly imported from Vana'diel via dimensional portals)

While on the subject of the new chocobo stuff. I wonder what the "New World" is.

Arid soils? So the Mamool Ja of Eorzea are from a desert climate? Very curious as to why they're in La Noscea then vs Thanalan

The inference seems to be that Limsa hired the majority of them (Ul'dah being not too fond of reptilian beastfolk, as it turns out, and Gridania always being a little picky about who is allowed into the Shroud) and possibly Vylbrand being a little closer to Hydaelyn-Mamook than mainland Aldenard is. Limsa certainly has more extensive ports and vessels that go further afield, at any rate, which probably makes travel to and from Mamook easier from Limsa.

As for the name itself, I imagine it's just a carry-over from XI, much like Gysahl or many other terms are. There's probably a Mamook somewhere on Hydaelyn.

As an aside, apparently Chocos just love bitter foods. So... whiskey for my men, and beer for my chocobos! Five pints of stout for the bird if you would be so kind!

Isn't the 'New World' that continent far to the west of Vylbrand that Limsa apparently discovered just prior to the Calamity? It definitely seems this is the homeland of the mamool'jaa (and thus, it would make sense for Mamook to be located there as well). But I guess we'll find out eventually. :)

Yes, a lot of the item descriptions point to the "New World" being the "Far West" as compiled in my neglected and outdated Hydaelyn thread. The Mamool Ja are also said to come from the "West".

Ooh.. Would it be a stretch of the imagination that the "New World" is in fact the lands of Aradjiah, which contain not only Mamook but also the Empire of Aht Urghan? Looking at the map of Eorzea, the "West" is not in view. Likewise the map of Aradjiah reveals the area east of it also obscured.. Seems to be more evidence to it. Would it be really cool if they SE created such a connection between Eorzea and Vana'diel this way. :)

Sadly, it is just your imagination - Hydaelyn is not Vana'diel, they are two totally different worlds, and SE specifically stated this during a past Q@A session for one of the Live Letters which seems to have disappeared (which used to be found on this link, but I saved the post by Bayohne in question for posterity:

So yeah, the use of Mamook and mamool'jaa in FFXIV are just fanservice fluff that doesn't mean FFXIV's world is the same as FFXI's (and the final nail in that coffin was the FFXI crossover event featuring Shantotto, she specifically mentions that she comes from 'the Federation of Windurst in the world of Vana'diel', and clearly speaks of Eorzea/Hydaelyn as a totally different world - and that she arrived in Hydaelyn via interdimensional travel). So yeah, that pretty much cements the fact - Hydaelyn is not Vana'diel, or any other FF world - it is it's own individual world.

The ONLY place you get these two desert-themed items is in the not-desert-themed Bronze Lake area, which is also apparently where the MJ (mostly) live. So perhaps they brought some things with them that took root in the swampy area? What's very interesting though is that even beyond the lizardy link of the MJs are that there are two other ingredients you can only find in the Bronze Lake area that don't have a native home there:

Perhaps of note, too, is that you can harvest earth shards in this otherwise water-dominant area (maybe even fire because of the hot springs). Was this area at one time desert? There's a quest line in Thanalan that talks about Goobs carrying and transplanting items (and critters?) on their backs, but there's no Goobs in that zone. The closest is in E. LaNosc to the south, but even then the Goobs are way south in that zone. That said, how did we get Mordo fruit and Shroud frogs?

Oakwood has some "native" species, but you also find "Far to the east" sticky rice as well as pixie plums from Coerthas. Hmmm!
