Newly level-50 player... What should I be doing?

Honestly, I feel sort of "lost" on what I should be doing. I've been doing more of the Story quests (just rescued Minfillia and the Scions from imprisonment), but I'd really like to focus on getting prepared for running more group content.

A few FC-members suggested running "Hunts" (not totally sure what that is still), but I'm not high enough rank in my GC to participate in them yet, plus I'm hearing that today, they're apparently not very good for gearing up anymore? Or is that just getting kind of blown out of proportion?

Hunts are still great for gearing up - but provided you've just reached level 50, I recommend first going after your relic weapon - which would involve first clearing the main story quests, then talking to the guy that gives you the quests that unlock all the optional dungeons. Mostly, finishing main story quests is what really opens up most everything else endgame-related - hard mode/new dungeons, hard mode primals (and through those, extreme mode primals/coil), the list goes on.

That said, once you finish the main story, if you don't want to do something that's endgame oriented, there's always Hildibrand.

One thing it overlooks is hunts. You can get i90 gear really fast through hunts, and it's great for tomes in general.

I would focus on getting Mythology for the i90 gear, using dungeon drops 55~70/80s as stepping stones.
They all would out perform your AF.
Unlocking your roulettes would greatly help your mythology gain.
Crafted i70 accessories and gear used to be cheap, but prices spiked up when desynthesis came out.

If you are going to be monk main, level up your crossclasses to access the skills for end-game content.
Bring your lancer from 16 to 34, gives you invigorate and blood for blood. Marauder to at least 8 for bloodbath and then 26 if you want mercy stroke.

It honestly depends on what you want to do and where your interests lie. You mention gearing up to do more group content then maybe work on some dungeons for tomes and gear. Depending on how fresh of a 50 you are will determine which dungeons you can run. Brayflox Hardmode and Halatali Hardmode are relatively easy and they have a chance of dropping Darklight as well as ilvl 70 gear. You could also start working on your relic weapon or just run the primal hardmodes for a chance at a weapon (ilvl will depend on the primal). Also if you're in a FC I'm sure you can ask for help running dungeons ^_^ Well I wish you luck in whatever you wanna do :D

Hunts are still good at gearing.
Your main focus should be on finishing main quest. After it - opening all lvl 50 4-man dungeons. Doing relic. Then you should try to find a party to finish CT:Crystal Tower/Labyrinth of Ancients (24-man dungeon) and gain entrance to ST:Syrcus Tower. While doing some hunts you could get some allied marks. Your target gear is ilvl 90 from marks/mythos + ilvl 100 gear from ST + ilvl 100 gear from soldieries. Souldiery ilvl 100 gear could be later upgraded to ilvl 110 with allied seals item / second coil item (Sand of time/Oil of time).
All while pushing your FC guys into helping you with first coil.

The absolute first thing you should do is unlock all the level 50 duties. There are a lot of them. Most are unlocked in mor dhona.

But no really OP, you can ignore hard and expert roulette* entirely if you gear up through hunts. Saves a ton of time, I went from i55 AF to i90 "myth" gear in a single night using hunts. It's dirt cheap from the Hunts vendor.

*At least till you decide to go after your novus

Hmm, well it looks like before I can do any "Hunts", I'll have to get my Grand Company rank up. Any advice on getting company seals?

FATE, guildhest roulette, and once you get enough rank you can start turning in pink/green stuff for seals at the GC.
