Optimal Rank gear with High defense + Optimal rank weapon
This. Until r27 the best defensively talking is harness set. But if you want a more evasive armor (assuming you don't feel like tanking) then you can seek tarpper tunic set or mixing trapper tunic and harness sets.
From 27 on you're supposed to stick with haubergeons.
At about 30 I would work on the 35 NM gear. very good stats on these and they can carry you on to your "end game" gear for the most part as well:
Weapon: Boar's Bane
Body: Kokoroon's Darkshell Mail
Legs: Paladin's Trousers
Feet: Engineer's Leggings
Head: Conquistador Elmo
Honestly... Depending on what you are doing... Just make sure your weapon is optimal rank, then for everything else... find stuff in the mid-low 20 range.
Yeah optimal rank gear will be "best" because you'll get the full value for every stat... but there are so many pieces of gear out there that you could be carrying a bunch of crap just to rank from 16 to 21 (which can be done in one sitting depending on how much you like grinding.)
The stat differences from the level 16 thing you are optimal for and the 22 thing you aren't optimal for are pretty small. and the convenience of not having to buy and carry a bunch of gear that you will use for a short period of time more than makes up for the few stats you are missing out on.
Unfortunately, a lot of this game is amorphous right now.
Between the changes we can't see and the changes that are so small as to barely have an effect... just go with stuff that looks good until about 25... then start looking for the optimal rank gear upgrades.
The Haubergons are also the best defensiv gear in the game. The cuirass stats are missleading and far inferior to the haubergeon stats.
@Topic
You can use the Haubergeon way before optimal rank, because it is so much better than the usual rank 20-27 gear. Dosn't hurt to use it at Rank 20. Pre 20, i would suggest the Tabarts (Rank 15)
The best gear would be the scale males, but they are very costly for the rank (Rank 14, Rank 21).
Weapons should always be optimal rank, because they lose durability way faster.
I wouldn't recommend the NM weapons. The stats are useless and the +1 versions of your usual weapon are way batter. Also they go for only 150k-250k. So you don't have to spend a fortune.
It depends, if they are like myself, they could have had LNC leveled up before this gear was introduced and not have it yet still.
Those NM weapons are free, and very good. You can't say stats are useless but then go on to say the +1s are better... implying that stats are not useless.Quote:

Missleading in what way?Quote:

Not really sure what he meant either ^^: Defensively speaking cuirass beats hauby due not only greater def but also by the damage cut effect. Even tho damage cut effect goes down as the armor start wearing out, only the HP bonus from cuirass is already enough for it to be used IMO. Hauby is even to cuirass for GLA only since STR increase damage cut from blocked attacks...but even as GLA i still prefer just sticking with cuirass set (because its also very beautiful on my miqo'te =P Can't wait to see a cuirass with shoulderguards!).
But as people say here..."taste is like ass...everyone has their own.". Its up to the player to decide which one to use...if the player has allotment already directed to VIT then hauby might be more appealing to him than cuirass due STR bonus...if the player has an allotment like mine (balanced with STR spike) then cuirass is much more interesting than hauby for tanking purposes.
The Cuirass would be the best defensive gear if we couldn't set our own stat points.
You can simply take 8 STR and 4 DEX from your stats and put them in VIT, if you use a Haubergeon. In the end you have nearly the same HP, 4-8 additional points for point allotment (=7-9 instead of 6 VIT), the same def, but way higher mag def.
Only the Damage Cut is a bit lower, but I'm not 100% sure about its effectiveness.
You would still have more VIT, though. In the end the pysical def would be similar, but the mag def would be way batter.
The Vintage Haubergeon has also more and cheaper +1,+2 versions. We have even a +3 in the bazaar right now.

They are "for free", but it still isn't easy to get them. Especially if you don't have a Rank 50. Than you need help from others and it still can take hours to get it.
In the same time you can get 100-200k from leves and spend them on a +1. Without help.
And with stats I mean, that the stats of the NM weapons aren't good.
The Boar's Bane gives you +4 STR and -1DEX, 128 att, 121 acc, 135 critical, 121 parrying.
The Spiked Iron Labrys +1 has 128 att and 142 acc, 148 critical, 155 parryng.
So you are trading 4 STR for 20acc, 13 critical and 34 parrying and 1 DEX.
Also the money isn't gone. You can sell the weapon later.
If you don't want to spend gil, you can of course do the NM's. It is definitely an alternative.
But I wouldn't recommend it.
I just think its a waste to bother with HQ gear until you are ready for your "50" gear that you will be sticking with for a while. HQ for gear that I will just wear temporarily, maybe even for just a short time, I am not really interested in spending gil on.
But, I know a lot of people who want HQ through all levels, more power to them. I understand where they coming from. But, IMO, not worth it.
There is way more rank 30 content than rank 50 one. So you will "stick around" more with that gear.
Good gear helps you levelling up, too. Especially weapons.
Also, rank 50 +1's are very expensive.
When the 30 +1's are 2-3 times the price of the base item (200k-300k max), rank 50's will sometimes go up to 10 times the price (2.000k-10.000k.)
I don't think there is a "smart" thing to do, with your +1's rank-wise. You need to know for yourself how long you gonna use this equipment, how useful it is and if the time and money spend on it is appropriate.
