Could the fast camera be causing my dizziness?

Thanks everyone for the ideas, still stuck to a daily limit... Anyway, I avoided the game yesterday, and after over 24 hours of not playing, I'm feeling quite a bit better. The feeling is almost completely gone. I'll see tonight if it fully leaves, and if it does, I think that pretty much confirms FF14 is causing it. Why else would it stop every time I stop playing the game?

Anyway, I'm wondering what I can all do to help this with the game. I was thinking about

1. Slowing the camera down to a nice smooth rotation (I use the controls where you left click to drag, and I typically drag fast as I said before)

2. Clearing up the HUD. When I first played it was overwhelming for me, but I got used to it. Doesn't mean it still might not strain my eyes/brain. There's only so much information our brains can process at once, and it might just be too much for me.

3. Making the HUD transparent. Figure it'll be easier on my eyes as well. I'd be able to see the entire screen rotating, and it wont be as hard to look at. As it stands now, random sections (where the hud) of the screen stands still, so that could be throwing me off as well.

4. I pushed my TV back about an inch. Can't go any farther, but I may be able to physically back up a bit.

5. I might take a 15 minute break from ALL screens every hour. No computer, phone, tablet, laptop, Vita, 3DS, etc.

6. I may zoom the camera out a bit more than usual. It may help, but it may not... Not sure...

And that's all I can think of doing. Any other settings you guys think I should change? Like, would lowering the contrast possibly help? I'm on the PS4 version so there's not much I can do with the graphics quality (I don't think)... What else would you recommend me trying? (And thanks for the help guys. I really like this game, and don't want to stop playing. Especially after some friends of mine have started as well.)

Reached post cap for the day, so I can't respond to those on page 2(thanks for the suggestions btw) but here's some extra information in regards to questions.

1. I'm playing the PS4 version with a mouse/keyboard so its running at 1080p 30 fps
2. My TV does have a mode where I can run the game at its default resolution which would be smaller than my TV's size.
3. I normally play with the light on since I play at night.
4. TV is at eye level, but only about 4 feet away
5. Forgot to mention, I use the controls where left click controls the cam; so I have to constantly turn the cam to face forward. Sensitivity is so high that moving the mouse less than half an inch does a full 360d rotation.

For about two weeks now I've been feeling semi dizzy. It's not spinning or moving dizzy, but my head just feels a bit strange, kind of like how when I spin the camera around in game--which has lead me to believe it is what is causing it.

Currently I am playing on a 40" LED tv, with camera sensitivity set to max. Thing spins crazy fast, and I'm constantly moving it and jerking it around, and if I remember correctly it did this to me about a month ago when I first resubbed as well. When I first got the game though, I didn't feel this way, and things were different.

Originally I was playing on a 27" and I was using a controller with a fixed camera speed.

Now let me say this. I am a huge gamer and I play thousands of games. I buy just about everything that comes out, and this has never happened to me before. But I've also never played a game with a mouse on a 40" either. My PC screen is only 23". Also other games I play on the 40" are fine as well. Battlefield 4 is fine, Destiny was fine, other rpgs (including ones such as Nier and Final Fantasy XIII) are fine, and so on.

The reason I'm thinking it is this game though is because when the signs started.

Friday, 8/1 was when me and my friend started playing. Spent all night playing it, and spent most of sat and sun playing it.(I don't notice the feeling when playing)Sun afternoon was when it first started, and it seemed to leave when I started playing again sunday night(like I said,I don't notice it while playing).Monday,feeling was still there, and I played the game monday night.Tuesday,same thing.Same feeling,and I played it again that night. Wed, felt the same,but I didnt play it, and same goes for the next Thursday.After the two day break, I felt better on Friday.Slightly noticed it,but hardly at all,and when I got home from work I was fine.Didn't play Friday night.Sat,once again I felt fine and I didn't play it.Sun morning,I felt fine, but sunday night I jumped back in

Monday of this week came,feeling is back.I keep picturing that camera turning in game,and I feel funny

Could be mild epilepsy...

Could be so many different factors. Go back to some of the games you mentioned after your dizzy spells start and see if they go away. I would bring this to your doctor, not the internet forums.

I play on my 47" TV with no problems. Just my 2 gil.

I get motion sick from games like this too, but I always stop for around a couple hours to a day.

Rest is important!

I get motion sick if the camera is in too close. I usually have to zoom out quite a bit to be okay. Also, make sure you aren't too close to the tv. You may need to be farther back from it since it is a bigger screen.

Also, you can 'edit' you original post to bypass the character limit.

That's good to know (what's with the limit?) Anyway, like I said, it has only happened with this game and I have been to the doctor. Pretty much nothing wrong with me, but they gave me meds for a sinus infection I have. Thought that could have also been causing it, but nope.

I've basically limited it down to this game. Like I said, a month ago it happened as well. I just sort of forgot about it... That's when I stopped playing and was fine.

Just curious, have you tried doing either of the Leviathan fights yet? I get mild motion sickness, but I am usually okay with special effects in games (unless they are 3d simulations, like with those special glasses). However, the Leviathan special effects (simulating the platform going up and down as Leviathan slams down or waves crashing on the boat when he uses certain abilities) make me feel motion sick. I have to specifically tune out those effects (not look at them) or I feel very sick. A few months back, I made a post simply asking for an option to disable those certain effects (I don't think it would be game breaking) but I received no replies... so I just deal with it. But the real test on if you are affected by motion sickness regarding this game would be to test that fight, I think.

No haven't done that yet, but typically special effects don't bother me either. It's just this after effect of the constant rapid movements are getting to me. If I go by what happened a week ago, it takes a day and a half before it stops completely and I feel like I'm back to normal. I don't feel motion sick in the actual game though, or at least, not anymore. When I first played it was a bit much, then I got used to it... Although maybe getting used to the fast movements is what is causing this. Also I will say sometimes the hud is overwhelming; especially when a lot is on screen.

But yeah, when I get there I'll keep that in mind. I plan on changing the camera sensitivity really low when I get home though. See if that helps.

Oh also, I'm pretty sure it isn't a growth or anything causing this. Had an x-ray done not too long ago because of impacted wisdomteeth, to see if that was causing the problems I had back then (pain). It was my teeth and have since been taken care of. Anything else would have shown up on that as well, since it was pretty much a full scan.

If the fast camers is the culprit, you can adjust the sensitivity in your options menu. Try playing around with your settings to see if it helps.

No motion sickness so far (I don't even know what is it), but...
Lately i've been getting huge headache for one to two hours after playing MNK seriously (trying to squeeze as much DPS as possible). Only MNK, only on cap, and only on mid-high content.
Currently I'm evading playing MNK.

It's not necessarily the camera, although that could be one of the factors. It seems like the larger screen is one factor. You play other games on this screen with no issues, so what else is unique about this game in particular compared to the other games you play on it? Demands of the HUD (eyes shifting around a lot more than other games, squinting to read text maybe)? Mouse control? Longer or shorter periods of focus on the screen?

Regardless of the game, make sure you look away every now and then to focus on something else in the room for a second or two.

Fast cameras wreck me in just about any game (poor eyesight, so I can't really play a lot of today's gen games ><). What helps me in XIV is the fact I can zoom out quite a bit. Places like Turn 2 would still get me though lol.

Try as well to see your TV settings, for games or Cinema movies. Some have motion controls that are made to smooth things out.

When I play on it with it activated, it's.. very buzzy.

So yeah, camera sensitivity, and TV adjustments.

My friend played Guitar Hero with me at the time and he had to stop because of motion sickness.

A good rest, a pause every 2 hours, and.. good luck.

Only idea I have is Field of View. Not sure if there is a way of changing the values for it in FFXIV though. When I played Wildstar for a bit it seemed to affect some players with similar symptoms. This video explains different sized monitors/TV's and your sitting distance from it calls for different values. So since from what I read, you seem to be playing the PC version on a 40", it may be set for a typical desk/monitor set up, yours may not be right playing on a TV.

If not then well ... I dunno go get a check up :P

Also try playing it in a well lighted room. I used to play this game with the only light in the room being the glow from the monitor. I noticed a dizzy/sick feeling. Once I lit up the room I haven't had a problem.

OP how far are you from your screen? The distance might be the problem if you're too close.
Also are you playing withy monitor only as the source of light? That's bad too, play in a well lit room.
How about your neck? Are you looking up while you play or looking down? I suggest setting your monitor at eye level.
I play with a 40" TV too and I used to get headaches if I play too much, in the dark or (back then) too close.
I highly suggest to look away from the monitor hourly. Get up and make some food or something. Don't stare too much at your monitor for long periods of time.

Are you playing in a well-lit room? At all times, you need your lights on. Playing in darkness causes eye strain which can cause headaches, dizziness, etc.
Are you playing a lot at night? If you are, consider one of two options:

The first (and free) option is to download F.lux (https://justgetflux.com/). This program will change the color of your screen based on the time of day (bright white, the normal, during daytime, and yellow/orange filter during night, similar to your lights in your house).

The second option is to buy glasses with this yellow filter built in. GUNNAR Optiks by Carl Zweiss (http://www.gunnars.com/) sells these, and they have a large variety of looks, so no, you don't have to get ones that look like generic "gamer glasses". They also have prescription glasses, and are accepted by many insurances (I personally use a pair of Phenom, and my insurance covered all but $10).

It's probably motion sickness. I don't get it with this game, but I do sometimes with other games. When I do get it, I feel slightly nauseous after playing for a while (the feeling that you want to throw up).

The differences from your previous setup (bigger screen, faster camera) can both cause the problem, but it looks like you're already looking into that.

For first-person games, you can expand your field of view (FOV) and turn off effects like head bobbing. For third-person games, you can slow down the camera sensitivity.

Since you're on a TV, make sure it's on "Game Mode" if it has a mode like that. This turns off post-processing effects and reduces input lag. If there's no game mode then manually turn off any post-processing effects like motion smoothing (Auto Motion Plus, MotionFlow, TruMotion, etc.) and noise reduction. Input lag can also cause motion sickness.

Soooo did anyone actually suggest seeing a doctor?

when you said your head feels funny, is it like a heaviness? Cause my mom's had that problem and come to find out she's been having migraines all this time. Some migraines don't come with traditional symptoms. Doc gave her a preventative and she's much better.

Just a side note to the OP, I have had the problem of getting sick while playing games my whole life. I never wanted to tell anyone about it because I was afraid the solution would be to just not play games. When I was 27 noticed I was starting to get sick just from looking at my phone and scrolling through FB/Twitter. I finally went to the Optometrist, it was the same song and dance as always: Look through the lenses, what looks better? Can you read the letters? You all know the drill. My vision was fine!

I told him how I was getting sick just looking at my phone, I told him I had had problems with video games ever since I could remember... then he suggested something else. We went back to the lenses and he would put letters out of focus, then focus them again and tell me to read them as fast as I could as soon as I could see them. He stared at my eyes the whole time with a magnifying scope.

Here is what was wrong: I have perfectly fine vision, however, my eyes take an extended time to focus. So when an image is moving (such as a scrolling phone screen or a video game) my eyes cannot focus fast enough to to keep up. Which causes my eyes to constantly try and focus on background/foreground/anything not moving. This is what causes the sickness.

He prescribed some glasses for me to wear anytime I am looking at a screen. (Phone, TV, video game, computer) It has been 2 years and I have not gotten sick (while wearing my glasses) a single time.

Just something you, or anyone in this thread might want to consider if you suffer from the same problem!
