Could we get a Great Sword Job/Class? (Dark Knight, possibly?)

I played Final Fantasy XI for about three years and always wanted to do Dark Knight but was discouraged by many and more players who informed me that it was gimped at later levels. So I settled for Paladin, even though it's a sword/shield Job. It's dopey, I know, but I prefer my fake person to use a sword instead of and ax or spear and I don't have much love for tanking. I know I'm not alone in this notion, and I feel like fixing whatever was wrong with Dark Knight from XI, coupled with the addition of over sized blades so commonly attributed to the Final Fantasy series overall would be one more stack of incentive to keep playing! You could give the Buster Sword an appearance, yes? Tell me that wouldn't rake people in. I know Red Mage is a huge demand you guys are trying to accommodate, but still. I want mah Dark Kuhniggit.

I believe yoshi has said he wanted dark knight to use a greatsword, I don't remember where though. Possibly int he expansion, but we wont know anything about that until october

Yeah, you're not alone. I love my paladin/warrior for tanking purposes, but I would love to have a fighter-class like said jobs but focused on DPS. Hopefully, if what Mr.Smily says is true, I would totally roll a DRK with greatsword. I don't like scythes.

As long as the greatswords are as massive as Garlands, Clouds, and Jetchs weapons.

Since people are throwing around the notion of dark knight and a dps class why not fuse the two? If DRK is a tank (and it should be), I believe that it should play the specialized OT role in end game and raids, similar to war pre 2.1. This would help solidify the two tank mechanic and w/o gimping the party as a whole.

I have no idea what you wrote before but this "Edited because of sensitive players" made me rolmfao!

I feel specialized roles within classes would help with some diversity with party make ups. As it stands there is equal benefit to having either a war/war or pld/pld or pld/war. I want to see more trade offs when choosing classes. T7 and T8 are examples where there is no need for an ot even though there are mechanics that require tank swaps or add control. An ot is actually a hinderance due to the lack of dps in phases.

I want dark knight to have a scythe, a lot of things can wield a great sword but not many would feel right holding a scythe

I don't think anyone that has played this game can expect a great anything from these devs. You might be able to look forward to a class that uses some of these weapons though:
Adequate Sword
Nifty Sword
Just wait until 2.3 Sword
Eh, it will do Sword
Poorly thought out and implemented sword
We need a test server Sword
Please look forward to it Sword

DRK could still use greatswords though. Cecil, however, was sword/shield as a DRK, and he's sorta the original FF Dark Knight. This being said, there's no reason why a sword/shield character MUST be a tank. Shields can do lots of damage. Imagine DRK specific shields with spikes and some sort of damage rating to add to the potency from Shield Bash. DRK-specific swords could have slightly higher DPS via faster attack speeds, and maybe DRK could be limited to DRG-style 'medium' armors instead of PLD/WAR-style 'heavy' armors.

I'd prefer a scythe as well, tbh. I know that this is XIV and not XI and blah blah blah, but one thing I miss about BLMs in XI were the handful of scythes we could use, and the vast array of scythes and greatswords I collected for my Dark Knight. In fact, I'm still hoping that they scrap the whole armory system entirely because just being able to use 1 type of weapon per job is so limiting. They backed themselves into a corner trying to salvage this silly system.

Scythes are botanist off-weapon so no scythes for DRK. (nice, is a knight not a harvester).

So, a Great Sword class, a simple Knight class would make sense using the famour Knight Swords then a job class for it, could be similar to ACN where it divides into two job, having a Holy and a Dark Knight, both iconic FF Knight Sword users. Maybe just have a Holy Swordsman Job and that`s it, /gg.

You're all fools! Dark Knight clearly should be using Blitzballs as weapons.

Personally, though, I'd like to see DRK as an alternate Job from the Gladiator class - AND have it be a DD, instead of a Tank. I want to see SE prove they have enough creativity to work all Gladiator's tanky abilities into a genuine DD class, and make it work. It can be done, I'm sure; I've already seen several great ideas for it on the forums. Sword and board is a classic Dark Knight design dating back to Cecil in FFIV, and even Leon in FFII used a one-handed sword. Plus, the idea of the Holy Knight and the Unholy Knight originating from the same common origin appeals to me a great deal.

I'm tired of lazy people insisting, "It can't be done - X class has too many abilities that suit its default role A to EVER suit a job with role B or C!" It disgusts me even more to hear the devs themselves muttering about, "In the future, Jobs may change or replace base class abilities, etc, etc," as though they've given up already. Imagination, folks, it can work miracles!

Just thinking about everything I have seen a Dark Knight become from FFIV to FFT and beyond, I think having DRK be more about taking more damage and having low HP to maximize damage would be the most fitting for the class, which would also allow for that class to have some more healing-type abilities that, on other jobs, would seem undeniably broken.

But yeah. Back on topic, if we were to have a greatsword class (Call it something like "Soldier" or "Fighter"), I would definitely want to see Samurai and Mystic Knight take up the position as its Jobs. Samurai would be a DPS, and Mystic Knight would be a Support. Both would have the same selection of weapons, though the Mystic Knight would probably get more ornate, middle east-inspired swords for its job-specific blades where Samurai would get simpler, more far east-inspired job-specific blades.

Next, when the only thing that is required is MOAR DOTS, "Arcanist's Sword" would cause all attacks to inflict up to five stacks of "Proliferate" on the target (Max 5 stacks, 10s duration. Increases damage of all Damage over Time debuffs on the target by 10% per stack) at the cost of 100 MP per attack. ((Based off of the idea of using Bio Sword to amplify the effects of Bio, Bio II, Miasma, and Miasma II, but also able to work with Thunder, Thunder II, Thunder III, and many other DoTs as well, such as from Monks and Bards.))

Finally, a special, final attack called "Blade Evocation" (180s cooldown), which would cause the Mystic Knight to unleash all of the magic their sword is imbued with, causing a powerful effect to occur depending on which kind of magic a sword is imbued with, but has the unfortunate drawback of putting all "Sword" toggle buffs on a 30s cooldown.

Runic Sword: Fully Rejuvenates MP and inflicts "Silence" on the targeted enemy for 10s.
Thaumaturge's Sword: Inflicts a powerful magic attack on the target.
Conjurer's Sword: Heals all allies in range for 25% of their maximum HP and grants the "Radiance" buff.
Arcanist's Sword: Refreshes the duration of all DoT abilities on the enemy, then spreads those DoT abilities to all enemies in range (similar to Bane, but works on every DoT buff with a duration on it.)

There was a small allusion to sam or dk but its a really old example and not the one I am thinking of which is proving hard to find was it wasn't in one of the letters, it was one of his other interviews. He mentioned wanting to save a greatsword class for dark knight. In any case, I'm sure we'll hear more in october fan fest as far as jobs go.

I said broken character, not class. But thanks for remind me of that... sigh, that is a broken combo, no sh*t, but in FFT is possible to have many, many more broken combos with classes... and more easy, just get a ninja+monk and you are done with the game.
