Looks awesome ! :)
thanks!! i'll try and post a final product when i'm done.
There's a youtube vid where a guy actually forged one from metal and used it to take out some targets... forget the name unfortunately, part of some show where they make fantasy weapons. Not to downplay your accomplishment but I thought you might find it interesting. What is your made out of?
lol i saw that. i actually wrote something b*tchy, about how the wings were being used as if they were axes. that really bugged the hell outta me. but it's still cool. i'd probably prefer to take their gae bolg into battle than mine.
mine's made from a bamboo pole, wonderflex, spray foam, paper mache, plastic tubing with a straightened hanger for the vein. the perfectionist in me is being very critical of the work thus far.
Yeah, yours will make a much better costume prop for carrying around conventions for sure! Funny though, I thought the "wings as axes" was inspired, Halberds are basically spears with Axe heads, and there's no reason the Gae Bolg couldn't put it's "decoration" to fullest use.
by technicality, the way they forged gae bolg was in the shape of a halberd. so using it like an axe is quite fair.
we use it like that for our disembowel and chaos thrust too:
for disembowel we do two heavy swings, and then use the momentum to do a rotating stab. for chaos thrust we do two swings, spin the spear around and do a heavy stab.
l2halberd.
Wow! Impressive :D
I'd love to take that out for a spin ^^
Shelandra? Did you run some Dzemael Darkhold xp runs with my PLD a few weeks ago? I think you did!
Anyway, that's a really good job you've done there. Would like to see some more pics, possibly a full sized one at least. Keep up the good work!
A good thing to know is that back in the medieval times, every single part of a weapon was considered to be a weapon, if you sword stab failed, nothing stopped you to use the piece that protects your hand (forgot it's name) to pierce your opponents eye using the motion of your failed stab.
It's not like the blade itself is the only dangerous part of the weapon, so it's no surprise that when someone see a part that can conveniently be used to do damage, they use it and use it we'll :3
(And your wings are neat, far better than theirs x3)
indeed. i still have to respect the weaponsmith in the video though, he did make almost every piece of Gae bolg a thing that hurts people.
and thats what the goal of that was. the wings were actually pretty well done, but they were designed not to have structural flaws (like the in game one would if it were directly copied here.)
in the end, both OP's depiction and arcade arm's are both well done replicas of a great weapon.
i'll tell you what my beef was with that video, and after thinking about it for a bit, i realized we just had different views of the weapon. they were looking at it as a medieval weapon that could function on a real life battle field. i viewed it as a weapon that was made out of parts ripped off a dragon and fashioned into a spear.
hmm, i should probably take that back lol. yeah, i do. their's is neat. something i couldn't make myself, even if i had the tools.
and actually, that makes a lot of a sense for the wings to act as axes. i completely forgot about the existence halberds. derp
