MMO user research

Hello All!

My name is Matthew Phillips and I am a graduate student at the University at Buffalo in New York. I study anthropology and I am looking on gathering some preliminary data for my thesis. In general I will be comparing data we can obtain from sandbox MMOs in contrast to work that has been done on theme-park open worlds. While Final Fantasy would surely fall under the "theme-park" designation, I want to get perspectives from players of all MMOs and yours are just as valuable as those playing sandbox MMOs. As such, I was hoping to have a bit of help from the community and hope you don't mind me posting this thread here in this section. After doing a group project for 3 months in my university, I saw that a team-mate of mine had FF14 installed on his laptop. Asked him what his IGN was and found out he was in my FC...

Wow! You guys have been great! I have received double the responses I had intended to gather... and now have to purchase a pro account to view all the data, but you can't skimp when it comes to data :p I Had posted on 3 other communities forums (1 by 1), but it wasn't until I posted here that I saw such a boom in responses. Again, thank you all so much!

Protip: "Transgender" isn't a gender, it's when the one you were assigned at birth doesn't match the one you identify with right now. Most trans individuals identify as male or female.

A better third option would be "genderqueer," for people who don't strongly identify with either option. I personally know at least two people who, when asked "are you male or female?" would answer "no."

I started to check out your survey, but was immediately taken aback by the first question. Having the check box for transgender is pretty incorrect and discriminatory. As Jewelfox has pointed out many transgender folk do identify as either male or female, as that is infact what they are. Trans women are women, trans men are men. Though, opposed to having the other option being genderqueer, I suggest it being non-binary(Since genderqueer is a non-binary gender.) a separate part of the trans community whose genders (Yes, multiple.) vary indefinitely. An "other" or "would rather not say" option would also serve well.

To the people who remarked on the 'transgender option';
- would you consider "other" as a viable third option?
- or would "what gender are you (or do you identify with)" be an appropriate way of asking?

I'm asking because I might need to do surveys myself soon, and this is obviously a somewhat touchy point for people.

@JewelFox, RubyRose, Alice_89th, and TheRogueX- Thank you very much for this input, this was something I went back to early on and tried to hash out before I put the survey up. I had *thought* I had worded it "what do you identify as", but apparently I messed that up and my source wasn't very accurate on the transgender thing. Thank you very much, I apologize for my error here. I will be sure to avoid this moving on.
