Guide: How To Lock Desynth Level and Choose What Skill To Delevel

Ok guys, so after a couple hundred g's worth of gil and frustration over screwing up my desynth allotment and trying to redo my points constantly cringing at deleveling the lvl100 skills that I worked so hard on, I think finally found the trick (with the help of FC buddy Serafina Faye from Adamantoise) to control what desynth craft get deleveled first.

*Disclaimer*: This is guide is more geared to those who already hit the 300 level cap and want to shift some points around. Those who are getting screwed over by the -0.01 RNG might not find this to be much of use unless the leveling mats are too costly to afford a random delevel, then you should apply this trick as a safeguard.

Let's go straight into a typical scenario of how you want to control your deleveling:
-You maxed out two crafts A and B to 100
-You have two other crafts C and D sitting around 45~50 ish
-Now you're most likely already maxed out your 300 allowed desynth level, but you really want to get a 3rd class up to 95 so that you have 3 useful desynth classes.
-Say you decide to pick C to max out and want to scrap D, each time you level up C, you will randomly lose skill points in A, B or D to balance the total back to 300 (yes, losing 0.1~0.5 on a lvl100 skill IS PAINFUL)

Here's what you would need to do to level up craft C without messing with your "perfect" A and B crafts, while deleveling D craft:
-First, know that a desynth craft will NOT delevel if it is flagged as a "active". From my experiment, a desynth craft will be active for your next 4 (see note at bottom for reasoning) SUCCESSFUL desynth rounds, including the round that you used to flag it as "active".
-To save cost, you will want to go to an npc and buy a cheap item and desynth it on the craft that you want to lock. In our scenario, we want to flag A and B as active first to lock them before we try to level up C. Do it in any order you want, A then B or B then A, doesn't matter. I would stick with one rotation consistently for simplicity.
-Now that you locked the two crafts you like, you can begin desynthing to level up your craft of choice, which is C. This should automatically delevel craft D in return to balance the total to 300 again. It is safe to desynth UP to 2 TIMES to level up like this.
-Repeat the whole process again every time you want to level your C desynth.



Here's a short snip of my technique working. In my case, I lock Blacksmith and Goldsmith first using cheap npc items, then level Armorer, while deleveling Carpenter (yes I made a mistake and mixed the order on one of the lock but this shouldn't matter if you know the limit and only try to level up for 2 rounds):

Further finding: It might even be that the maximum active round is up to 4 instead of 3 like I thought, so in my example, I can do: BSM lock > GSM lock > ARM lvl > ARM lvl > repeat to allow an extra desynth and save on spending gil on npc items. If i try to do an extra ARM lvl instead of repeat, it seem that my BSM skill will lose the lock and delevel (most likely because It was locked the longest and expired). Conversely, If I try to do GSM lock before BSM in my rotation, then GSM will be the one to delevel first instead. Food for thought.

Follow-up: After another desynthing another batch of items for another hour, feel that it's safe to confirm that the maximum locked round is a maximum of 4, including the desynth round that was used to lock a craft. Guide is updated to reflect changes.


At the moment I don't really have time to test other scenarios and I am tired of spending more gil to test this and I will just stick to this method to safely cap my 3rd desynth. If you guys find something better let me know so I can update. Lastly, sorry if I am not good at explaining and writing guide but I hope it is enough save you guys lot of gil and headache.

If someone got 100 100 95 done, it would be awesome if they could test it. Otherwise I'll try it later this week when I hopefully finish with armorer.

You don't really need 100 / 100 / 95 or anything even close to 300 total - as long as we can prove that the desynth level could be less than 1.0 it's all we need to know. You can simply start on "virging" user who never desythned anything. Level only one class a little bit, than use lock on it and start leveling up second class. In therory it can have onle two possible (logical) outcomes:

A) The other classes will never go bellow 1.0 and as the first class is "locked" it should never drop down during leveling the second class in "lock mode" (or the lock mode will not work if there is no other class to decrease??)

or

B) As the first class is locked and the only other class above 1.0 is being leveled up system will start decreasing the other "initial" levels below 1.0

If B) is the case there would be other points to consider:

- how low it coudl go? To 0.00 or maybe "only" 0.01? That wouldn't be that bad thought as you'd be able to reach 100 + 100 + 99.95 ;)
- will the decrase work before "trigering" the other classes by at least one desynth or not?

Wow, cool find as I was just bemoaning dropping from GSM100.
That 95 skill would be tedious as hell though.

Using an 8 desynth cycle and this mechanic you could likely get to 100/100/95 while needing far fewer items to desynth than if you try to max out each one at a time.

Class 1 -> Class 1 -> Class 2 -> Class 3 -> Class 1 -> Class 2 -> Class 2 -> Class 3 -> Repeat

You can only max 100 in 2 classes and then 95 in 1 other class. Since your other 5 unused classes start and locked at lvl1, it will add up to 100 + 100 + 95 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 +1 = 300 capp.

If you really want to, you can even mix it into 99, 98, 98 for your three top classes instead.

Capped at 300/300, used this tech to preserve my GSM/BSM/CUL levels, and a CRP desynth gained 0.32 skill but my ARM skill only lost 0.11, dropping from 1.11 to 1.00. This also resulted in some math fail making my skill total 300.21/300.

Unfortunately the game apparently forces you back down to 300 no matter what, so even though the next synth granted 0 skill, it RNGed smacked my GSM skill down 0.21 skill.

If anything, this means that the popular method of doing at least one synth in everything is detrimental because every time one of those minimal skill hits 1.0, the next synth will always drop skill, and you may not be able to manipulate which skill.

I have been experimenting all day with this "lock". I have been changing my classes alch>weaver>gsm> desynth alchemy. For 15 skill levels in alchemy now and I have not lost any points in weaver (67.23) or gsm (100) while leveling my alchemy from 61.13-77.34. I am pretty sure the "lock" just requires the job to be activated or referenced by the server in any way. Changing your class seems to do that.

Edit: I did lose .01 at some point in gsm. But, I am unsure if I forgot to change or I am having extremely good luck and changing class does nothing.

Edit 2: I tried to repeat my success and it did not work. I don't know if it locked inadvertently before or I did something else to lock it, but I logged back in today and was losing skill within 20 desynths. I am going to play around and see if there is something I did that could have locked it besides changing classes.

While I agree this is a very helpful find, we shouldn't have to do this period. If SE had designed the system properly, it should automatically choose the lowest of the inactive crafts over 0.01 to de-level, or given us a way to toggle which one to lower. People are going to max out to 300 anyways, what's the logic behind the system's deleveling as it stands? None. In other words, on top of spending all the time and money to get to 100 desynth, then you have to spend even more just to make sure the RNG doesn't screw your hard work.

I honestly think it's a flaw in the system that they allowed so they could get the feature out in the patch on time. There's no way they won't fix this in the near future.

It's part of the game. Also would be great if more people experiment with Rath's method of just rotating class to see if this is a cheaper method. I'm already capped out so I can't really try it here.

I don't like to stress about locking something out and whatever so I just simply don't desynth anything that has 100% desynth chance to avoid those +0.03/-0.01 moments.
So far at about 45, 42, 78 skill level for the 3 jobs I want to max out - desynthing stuff at 50%-80% chance gives from +0.29 to +0.48 or so with no or only 0.01 decrease. I don't buy items, just craft some if they require not many and easy to get materials or use stuff dropping from dungeons and leve chests.

I've been using OPs method for the last few days and its working perfectly. I post up in New Gridania since i can buy cheap vendor GSM and ALCH items from the nearby NPC's to lock them both. Then focus on desynthing BSM.

Its worth mentioning that you can Delevel your unwanted classes much faster if you actually focus on 2 classes to skill up. (eg. Lock GSM, Skill up ALCH, Skill up BSMx2). The only downside to this is its a lot of back and forth crafting which taxes the brain very quickly. I would get burned out pretty quickly and would loose all motivation to continue. I have now decided to Lock both GSM and ALCH to make skilling up BSM less tedious. Then once the dev lock feature is implemented i'll focus on skilling up ALCH.

I do find it very tedious to do and cant wait until the Devs implement this Lock feature. We are already having to spend massive amounts of Gil on the required items/matts to level these skills, it would be a nice QOL improvement to not have to worry about accidentaly deleveling your prized Dsynth class.

TBH if you're going to lock the skills, instead of vendor items, you may as well keep a bunch of materials to create i20+ items so you can make the most of the locking process by maybe getting back Fieldcraft Demis :p

So I am currently levelling 2 crafting classes and levelling desyth on them as I go now they are both 30. I have 50 on CUL and about 30 on GSM, no other crafting classes at 30 and already I'm getting -0.01 on the one I'm not levelling at the time quite often. Now am I correct in assuming that if collect fish and GSM items and I level them both at the same time and for example desyth 3 things on one then 3 things on the other it should stop this delevelling, or am I misunderstanding the original post?

Thank you very much for this. Saved a fair bit of annoyance trying to get rid of the 10 or so I accidentally put into carpentry instead of alchemy. Am at 300/300 now in the 3 classes I want.

Until they give us a real lock feature, I'm going to just level two classes. I have minor points in the rest (I know, not a great idea anymore...) and I switch between them often enough naturally that the skills I want rarely delevel. And, I don't have to worry about the issues near 300 since I'll only wind up with 206 points spent in the end. And, I don't have the money for three classes at 100 anyway. It's costing about 300k per level for me now, ignoring the Demi IIIs I'm getting cheaply but want to use rather than sell. Still, spending 300k a level from 75-100 is a lot of money to do for three classes...

They also mentioned raising the cap to 400 desynth eventually. Maybe in 2.4?

2.4 should raise the ilvl of desynthable drops, wich will requre a higher desynth skill, wich will require a higher desynth lvl cap for those who are already capped at 300.

Does anything reset this, like zoning/going in and out of instances?

Where was this information? I've been paying close attention to it and nothing has been said about any raised limits to this.

They definitely said it. I can't remember where though, one of the letters from the producer, I think. Same place that they said they'll implement a skill lock into the desynth skill interface so you don't have to do this dance to lock a skill.

Yoshida: I mentioned this briefly in the past, but the current desynthesis skill maximum is 300, but we are planning to raise this to 400 with the cap increase.
