So this expansion...

Will the expansion, 3.0. Replace the mainstory quests with new ones and Reduce the 2.0 storyline to backstory like ARR did with 1.0, or will it work like the post-ARR patches (New level 50 quests that start when the last story quests left off)

Related, will there be servers that allows players to play at least part of 2.0 when the expansion hits?

The expansion will...expand...upon what we have. It won't replace it.

Have you played an MMO before? It'll be pretty similar to the way most MMOs handle expansions. All the pre-50 quest will still be relevant; however, I'd imagine that anything post-50, unless its required for progression, will just be skipped by "new players"

I;ve played a few, but not enough for an expansion to hit. The clostest would had been DCUO's DLC.

Okay so not the whole story but everything since the Praetorium (excluding primal fights) would be wiped then?

No content gets wiped with a expansion, everything we have will still be here it's just a new story arc will be added that will prolly be the same size as 2.0 or larger. You will still need to finish the 2.0 story to prolly have access to the expansion areas but what Nabian was saying is content that by that time is outdated ex primals ct/st will prolly be skipped by anyone just joining the game after the expansion in favor of the new stuff that will be available in the large next part to the story.

Nothing will be wiped it will just become optional but the mainstory goes up to shiva/ishgard atm not praetorium

Well we also have no idea when the expansion will for sure come, could be 3.0 could be 2.5+ dunno yet we only know up to 2.4 atm and that's as Xmbei said who knows what will go down after the queen of Rime is defeated.

I sure hope nothing gets wiped. I've yet to actually even start post 50 content.

I see. Thanks for the answers. The whole "reboot" thing they done for ARR had me little worried there.

For the basic side contents like raids and dungeons they'll probably be skipped but players will still run them for the ROulette bonus and new players will have to go through them once first if they wish to unlock their roulette and access the Hard Mode version of the dungeons.

However, Main storyline will not be skippable

As of now Yoshi-P did mentioned 3.0 Story will be the size of 2.0 storyline.

However, 3.0 storyline is the continuation of 2.X storyline so any new characters will most likely have to work their way through 2.X storyline since 2.X story is lvl 1 to 50 content.

3.0 storyline will most likely be the lvl 50 to (New level cap) content. So it will be impossible to skip any 2.X Storyline since to reach 3.0 storyline you will have to work your way into 3.0 storyline through 2.X storyline.

The ARR thing was more or less an isolated thing, sorta like a rebranding. 2.0 stuff will still be there for new players and the instanced places will be there for you to do. 3.0 will just be added the tail end the same was 2.1/2.2/2.3/etc was added.

Haha understand but why they did it from 1.0-2.0 was because engine was bad and story was lacking. 2.0 was really 1.0 story retconned with dalamud. So it was just 1.0 story with additional story. This time they dont need to retcon the whole things so we will be okay :D

With how WoW and other mmos do it the patch story is still part of the x.0 story and to level up and do next story you either get pled or had to do the story to go into next xpac to make sense

And yes he did xpac has level cap raise, new jobs and new skills with new area and story

The old content will stay. the reason the 1.0 story was wiped is because 2.0 was a complete remake of the game and the core mechanics changed but they did it In a way if you played 1.0 it wasnt pointless.

The only reason that ARR replaced 1.0 story, is cause they rebuilt the game from scratch. Also the warriors of light were absent for 5 years, after Dalamud.
It would be slightly awkward if they put that in ARR as well...cause end of 1.0, was lv 50 content; then in ARR, you need to redo all progress, cause everyone forgot about you.

With 3.0, the story will just continue where 2.0 left off. And you'll probably need to clear 2.0 story, to progress to 3.0 story.

Also there will be lv cap increase yes, possibly before expansion; so either in 2.4 or 2.5:ish. Yoshi had said that they would increase lv cap when they add new classes/jobs; which is 2.4.
They also mentioned that they wouldnt add new skills until lv cap goes up, and they mentioned adding levi/ramuh egis, which indicate lv cap increase. Since there's not cap increase yet, maybe 2.4, when Shiva comes and SMN gets Levi/Ramuh/Shiva egis.
I guess if they wanted to add more egis to SMN, they would wait for Shiva at least, cause they will probably not increase lv cap again, in quite some time. Considering that's 3 egis, then lv cap would go up to at least 65, but hopefully SMN gets more than just 3 egis, so my guess would be lv 75...which would double the nr of job skills we have. Less than 75 would kind of be disappointing, more than that would feel kind of overwhelming...

What I understand about FFXIV 1.0 is that, in SE eyes, it was a failure. So they decided to wipe the slate clean and start over. They also did this with the in game story of 1.0. So my answer to you is no. They are not going to wipe everything out and start a new. Currently the games story is in an Astral Era (an era of good blessing), so what I gather were going to see in the next expansion is a new localized enemy similar to the Empire. Right now we are just running around establishing ourselves as the defenders of the realm, so in the coming patch a larger force (Possible SPOILER (Watch out, watch out! don't look ahead)): possibly Omega Weapon brought by that wealthy dude from Ul'Dah). But, time will only tell.

Ummm yes we do we are stating previously answered info from Yoshi. Yes we do not know anything about the story for 3.0 except it will deal with wrapping up for ascians and going closer to Garlemald. This is all info stated for plans by Yoshi. Also would be dumb of Any Mmo for an xpac to ignore prior story and retcon everything when it isnt a reboot but a continuation.

it doesn't have to be a retcon to be a completely unrelated story. take ALL of the ffxi expansions for example.

I can only hope it does the 1.0 > 2.0 thing because i want my world map one big thing, and my cities complete again.

but i'm somehow doubting they're going to redesign the entire world again for 2.0 > 3.0 (seriously, these tiny areas are anoying, and the big open world of 1.0 was amazing. There's no reason cities couldnt at the very least be one area like before).
