Hi guys,
My friend is thinking of playing FFXIV but he hates anything that is random. Just want to hear everyone's opinion whether you think FFXIV can still be enjoyed without engaging in anything with RNG?
I depends, does drops in dungeons is considered RNG ?
If not, then yes.
Thats borderline silly. RNG is good for most things. However, just have him ignore Zodiac weapons/Ponies/Mirrors and he will have a good time.
This game uses a token system, so yes you can enjoy it w/o caring about RNG, but RNG must stay <.< if you don't like it don't do it.
I've played this game since beta without a care in the world for RNG.
I'm not going to be doing the Atma questline, nor am I going to be farming for mirrors.
I don't really care about the RNG involved in dungeon drops.
If your friend is the type to be a hardcore player that wants everything, he will not find what he's looking for.
If he's like me, and just plays games for fun, it can absolutely be done.
I'm happier than plenty of FFXIV players out there, simply because I don't care for the items that require atrocious RNG battles
You can't craft as that has a chance to fail, you can't do instances because they don't drop every single piece of gear on a boss in one go.....your friend is going to be extremely limited in their game play if they are looking to avoid any kind of RNG element in the game. Actually, just about any RPG (not just ff14) isn't going to be much fun for them given that ALL of them have RNG involvement.
A quick stupid question... I see RNG being used in lots of places... what does it mean? :)
You can pretty much have a top-tier gear without any RNG involved in it. You can also craft and HQ items without having to pray to RNGesus. Most of fights are mechanic-related and barely have RNG in them.
Basically, you can be active, have an above average gear and craft without ever depending on RNG. So yeah, obviously this game can be enjoyed even if you're the unluckiest person in the world.
Peoples that complains about RNG in this game should probably check what other MMOs have to offer. This game is veeery gentle compared to most of them.
I think they have pills now for rngaphobia.
Honestly tell him to ignore every rpg ever made, He won't like it
Well, you could that the endgame revolves around RNG and a lot of table flipping.... (Coil 1 & 2, Primals, Dungeon Drops, Zodiac Weapons... ) but there's also an alternative to gear in form of Myth and Sol pieces. If your friend cares about getting the "best of the best" in this game just warn him that he could be in for a world of frustration :x
Your friend should give up on life or learn to accept it. EVERYTHING is random & will always be random. Even things that involve some skill have an underlying randomness in the calculations; chance to hit, critical hit, damage, etc. RNG is the fundamental core of an MMO, which has evolved from tabletop RPG/D&D/diceroll. The only thing that is certain is uncertainty itself.
I disagree, token system is better than rng. With tokens you are recognized.
lots of things are but not everything is.
Chance to hit is not random, once you're over the Accuracy cap, you can't miss.
EX Primal Weapons have no RNG at all, win all 3 fights, pick your weapon. Neither is any Soldiery or Myth gear.
worry about whether or not a hit Crits or an ability Procs is not worrying about RNG, that's extreme OCD and whoever has that problem should seek professional help asap.
Incorrect, especially this statement "Chance to hit is not random". Everything has a basis in randomness. Soldiery or Myth might not be random at the present but getting them involved RNG. RNG is the fabric of the universe, therefore, everything is random. From life, to stars, to how well your party performs on your primal ex battles.
I am aware that the ghosts in Pacman have rudimentary AI but there are still random elements to the game, just as with Super Mario Bros.
You're right :)
There is simple AI. I was only thinking of the cause & effect behavior.
God how boring would everything be without RNG? I can't imagine how a game without RNG would be any fun.
As they used to say about Titan HM, the hardest part about the fight is managing the 7 adds. Players may not be RNG but they can certainly be random and occasionally exceedingly bad. And the DF that matched you with them was RNG. :)
It's a JRPG. So randomness is definitely included when it comes to drops and a few higher level things. But I'd like to say it's definitely possible to enjoy the game without having to subject yourself to a particular grind. You can go about things casually and still be pretty decent.
Hammer Bros behavior is determined by RNG, among other things.
Wrong. It refers to mechanics controlled by the whims of the Random Number Goddess, may she always be praised. It's not the Random Number God, as some say, because no man could be as fickle as she is. Sometimes she sees fit to bless you with awesome rolls and great gear, and other times she decides that the guy that was laying dead on the ground for the entire fight should get something for his "efforts" (either that or you did something to piss her off that you had no idea would piss her off or she's having a bad day and decided to take it out on you).
What game, let alone rpg doesn't use RNG in some way? The only thing I can think of is FPS games, but deathmatch modes randomly spawn players so.
They could try... chess?
There's dice rolling in the background of every type of video game just about, so I'm gonna go with they probably can't avoid it.
