Summoners getting Carby now?!

I sure hope it is! I love Carby and it's sad I can't use it when I want too!

Looks like nice concept art and that's all to me. I don't get the carbuncle love either. The abilities are mostly the same but weaker.

Just don't do SMN quest and u still have Carbuncle instead of Garuda

The Carbuncle Love derives from the fans of Final Fantasy XI, where in Carbuncle is the first and primary Avatar that you were able to keep out 100% of the time (with Garuda being the secondary and only able to be achieved at around level 99, where as Carby can be achieved at level 20).

I can't put my finger on it but there is something in it that makes me say it's not a screenshot. Something in the textures maybe, they're flat in that picture and it makes it more cartoony and wowish than what the actual game looks like.

Personally ( and maybe I just don't have artist eyes) but that area in the picture looks the same as it does in game. That's just me though.

Edit: Even if it is concept art, they sure did put it out their that carby will be a summoners pet now.

It's a downscaled, compressed, and slightly touched up screenshot, but it's still a screenshot. The blotchy low-res gress texture makes that easily apparent.

That being said, it isn't indicative of anything. The carby is a bit more iconic than the lame primal egis, so it's possible (probable?) that they just used GM powers when taking the screenshot to summon a carby instead, since it is a promotional image after all.

huh? you got carby in ffxi at lvl1 the rest at 30(and earlier if you have the quest done with another job), and odin and alex at 75, and carby was the bad guy there, the carby love comes from it's cuteness lol.

That might be what I'm seeing then. It just didn't look right to me.

There could be an Arcanist off screen that sent in Carbuncle, and that Summoner actually has no summons out.

Carby's mitts around 20. Also, you can get the rest at 20(minus Odin/Alexander/Diabolos/Fenrir), if you can do the solo version of the trials. :P

The person you were referring to was speaking more specifically to the 0 perp cost that could be obtained with gear.

I think the overall affection toward Carbuncle came from the fact that it was the most widely used (in terms of general utility) and thus was the unofficial mascot of FFXI smns.

This pretty much nails it. Remember that those screenshots come from Development Servers, meaning that Character was likely created, and then with a Console Command, given a full set of SMN gear and not any Job Quests for the purposes of providing a nice screenshot.

We cannot on the Live Server, but with a Console Command ... It's possible for him to equip any piece of SMN gear he wanted to.

While logic is with you on this one, my heart goes out that I'll be able to use Carbuncle on my SMN. =D I mean, it just seems silly to make a screenshot with a SMN and Carbuncle if we weren't going to be able to summon him. I do remember a thread before where the Devs said they weren't going to allow us to summon Carbuncle, they never said we couldn't glamour over Garuda...

Yoshi-P and DEVs, had said on other subjects that they weren't planning on it, but did it anyways. They also sometimes go as far as to tell us why they could now and not then within interviews/live letter Q and A.

When they say no plans, I see it as " We can't atm because of X reason that they fail to mention till they can actually do it".

It works in opposite too, remember the "Roaming Primals" that they were suppose to add? It's not that they can't, it's either they abandoned the idea or something is holding them back from doing so.

I don't see what's so special about a blue pikachu, call me when you can summon zodiark.

Because carby is the only summon that looks like it's traditional form and also has all the anesthetics of feeling like a pet.

All the other summons seem like detached blobs of polygons with no real personality.

My Garuda is also uncooperative and downright stubborn.

On topic: I would also like to be able to summon carbuncle. Actually, I think I'm must tired of Garuda and would like some variety.

Titan and Ifrit get used in rare situations.

I think we're leading up to that. We need the story to reach a certain point so the roaming Primals will actually make sense. Right now they don't fit Lore. Now it'll be Lore breaking regardless to people who aren't far enough in the story but that's inevitable with an MMO.

Uhm carby has no cure abilities, they have exactly the same abilities as garuda and titan, just weaker.

We the players need the soulstones - Developers can just use a console command to turn into any class/job and wear/do whatever they want. You can turn yourself into a Summoner and summon Leviathan if you so felt like it.

Or they can summon carb while being a summoner, point is anything is possible, even what Swishytail suggested.

The summoner just hasn't unlocked Garuda yet via Class Quests

It is completely possible to summon Emerald Carbuncle as a Summoner if you haven't unlocked Garuda yet.
This being said the Summoner in the screenshot is wearing the Mythology Relic+1 Armor, so the GM that took that screenshot probably just made the character quickly
put on the relic+1 for looks and summoned the Carbuncle for the sake of taking a screenshot in front of that new mob.

People want to summon Carbuncle because:

A) It's a staple of the SMN job.
B) Cuteness.
C) Have you seen the egi's in this game? I would take carbuncle over green footless chicken any day of the week. And Topaz carby over Yellow McNugget as well. Don't even get me started on Red Buffalo Wings.

I think the number of people who are familiar with carbuncle from any of the other FF games or just like its looks far out numbers the people who want it for just FFXI related reasons. I have no clue what it really has to do with one specific game over another to some people, there are lots of reasons to love the "blue pikachu" as someone put it o.O

I'm more interested in everything else though.

If carby really is unlocked for SMN though, does that mean it's also unlocked for SCH?

And what is that monster? One of the new Hunt targets? Or a quest enemy?

I was thinking hunts would be more group oriented content, similar to high level treasure maps, though maybe with some light party options too. Going solo kind of makes hunt targets seem a bit wimpy, but that could just be me.

I'm thinking that the daily Hunts will be solo-able and just normally occurring mobs, but the elite weekly Hunts will be big things like boss FATEs. They said that the daily Hunts will be different per person, but everyone will have the same weekly Hunt. That being said, I bet this is an elite weekly Hunt monster, but this Summoner is brave. xD
