Looking to see if there are any other players around the server, and how you deal with possible raiding and being asked to get on voice programs.
It's scary for me and I usually end up making some kind of dumb excuse... But im a good player so I know this wont work forever.

While I'm neither, I have played with someone in that situation while I was raiding in WoW. It's not a big deal to many people, but it does require said person to put in a little more effort at doing well compared to their peers. Just be honest about it, because if your FC members/friends think that's a big deal, they're pretty shallow people. The FC just needs to remember that you're in that situation and so they have to type out any special instruction. You won't be able to respond to voice chat issues (spawns not being picked up and whatnot) but sometimes people can type it fast enough... or you would just need to be a lot more attentive. Essentially, compromise needs to happen in some way, and it's usually going to come from the person in that situation.
In FFXI, we never used voice chat for endgame content until years after release. We managed just fine, granted that there was some slack on that for the most part. People set up macros to notify others of incoming dangers, which is something that can still be done here if people take the time to make them. -

Since Communication is a big part of Progression Raiding. Just because you are Deaf or Mute, doesnt mean you can't Communicate.

Yea seems like the English community rely a lot of voice chat programs for communication unfortunately. Wasn't much of a problem when I was on Mandragora (JP server) where we rely more on macro to inform party members
There was a pretty epic thread by BamDeafPie on how the community discriminate against deaf players before mods deleted that thread. But you can still look for threads he post, some addresses deaf accessibility.

While I'm not, a good (online) friend of mine is, I met her on Ragnarok Online, where we tackled most of the hardest content together without much issue, then on WoW where we raided together, and now on here where we're more relaxed, but we're still doing CT and started coil, working on getting a static group set up still.
Anyways, point being, she's deaf/mute, but personally, I'd not have anyone else at my side in a raid because there's really no one else that I know will have my back when I need it. Be open and honest about it, and if they have an issue, leave and find people that will respect you regardless, because there ARE people that won't care and will value you. -

IMO being deaf would be harder than being mute. And both would only really hurt if you were in a role that needs to call out "curve ball" situations.
like OT having to yell at the MT to do something they should be doing due to some mechanic (OT gets frozen for example on T2 and can't pick up the add)
Heals if one needs to raise and the other needs to pick up the slack.. etc etc
I'm not saying I'd discourage you from playing one of these roles but I could see it slowing things down until your group gets in sync and can just read each other.
Being deaf would definitely be rough though... At least being mute you can still hear everything and just have to type out YOUR responses. Where as being deaf everyone has to type if they intend to keep you in the loop.
Overall though people shouldn't give you a hard time because of it. Don't be afraid to tell people. Personally yea I'd be hard on someone who was just like "nope I refuse to talk to you people!!!" but if they said "hey man I'm deaf so joining vent wouldn't do any good". Sure lets go if you can perform your role fine on your own we can troubleshoot between pulls. -

Just use macros in a situation where you would usually be required to communicate but most importantly just focus on your role. As long as you know your job, the fight and it's mechanics then it shouldn't hold you back at all.
I'd take a great player who can't communicate over an average one who doesn't shut up any day. -

I use Ventrilo with a group of people I have only known through Ventrilo for over 10 years (Since Final Fantasy 11 came out on Playstation 2) We all live in separate states but that hasn't hurt our friendship in the slightest. Some audio servers are nothing but grind junkies i'll admit I got lucky winding up with the server I am with now. All I can say to you is just give it a try. Maybe the people are bad and maybe they are not. You won't know where the train is going until you jump on it.Quote:

If anybody has an issue with that, they're a butthole and you are probably better off not being around them. You shouldn't have to lie about yourself online, especially if it's over something so trivial as video games.
Back in 1.0, a LS buddy mentioned they were colorblind during a Hamlet, which had 3 different colored icons you had to see if you were there as a gatherer. He let us know prior that he couldn't tell two of them apart, so we banded together as a group and told him which was green and which was blue. If he just didn't say anything and kept messing everything up, I'm pretty sure he would have felt much worse about himself as a player. -

I find it really difficult to express myself, as I've been quiet my entire life and topping that off with shyness is the icing. I just joined this really great LS and they want me to raid, But whenever the leader asks me to get on TS to just "talk/wastetime" my anxiety disorder takes over and I get flustered....
Some of y'all can just say its so "easy" to speak the truth. But for me the truth hurts, and its not uncommon for people to change or assume there's some kind of derpy brain injury along with being treated differently.
That's why I just wanted to see how others might fare in the same situation. -

I personally can't deal with speaking on voicechat, it's a personal thing. Macros are your best friend.
Being deaf is a little harder i imagine because your raidcaller or someone else will have to macro back at you but thats certainly doable.
But the key thing to remember here if someone is not willing to work with you just because of that, they're not worth working with at all. -

I have a sensory integration disorder that makes sounds (and other sensory data) overwhelming (thus it's very difficult for me to understand a lot of what I hear so trying to hear is pretty pointless), and like you I have anxiety issues about my own ability to speak. I also have a great deal of difficulty thinking in real time so spoken conversations (as opposed to slower, typed conversations that allow me a little more time to think) and thinking on my feet in battles are very challenging.
The solution: Playing with friends who don't mind going a little slower where possible. Open communication is key, regardless of if you have a long typed conversation with them before hand or use macros throughout the content. Enjoying the solo or other open world content of the game is good too.
Also I don't force myself to do anything that causes pain for the sake of a game, like voice chat with lots of people talking at once, shouting, laughing, nonsense chatter, etc. I have no reason to come up with excuses, I just honestly explain and if they push it I put my foot down because it really isn't worth the suffering that "a simple chat" can cause. I'm not abusive, I just say a flat out "no" with a brief explanation, then ignore any attempts at wheedling and the like while firmly repeating my stance. -

As a deaf individual and long time MMO player (PvE and PvP), I can tell you that it really is not that hard :) As many have told you already, most people will understand it, and those that don't aren't worth your time and would probably give you other problems down the road, so no loss there. So, even if I understand what you mean, you shouldn't worry a lot about it.
We are how we are, and there's no reason to be shy about it simply because there's some people that can't understand it. We're all different: someone wears glasses, another one hearing aids, the guy next to them is colorblind, etc., but in the end that doesn't matter, and mature people will know that it really doesn't (specially on a videogame).
I'm always upfront about it when I'm asked (of course, I don't go around yelling it) because I don't feel that I should hide it or anything, and the only people that have been somewhat stupid about it showed later that they weren't worth my (or anyone's) time in the end. There's other people that, from their good will, might assume things or treat you differently initially because they want to help you, but those are not bad and you just need to talk and have some patience with them.
As for the game itself, I adhere what has been said here. Macros are your friends and, as long as you know how to play your role, you'll be fine. It might be a bit harder as you must be 200% aware of what's happening, but it's doable. You don't even need anyone announcing you things like the Divebombs on T5, for example, as long as you know how and when these things happen (in the example of the Divebombs, you would be looking at the focus target window instead of listening to the voicechat and/or the clic sound during the fight). I tank Coil just fine, at least, with the rest of the party on TeamSpeak.
And I can tell you more. Once you play more with your group and you get used to play with each other, you might not even need to say anything during the fights. Simply discussing beforehand and after any wipes the strat that you're going to use will work just fine, as long as you can improvise by yourself and the rest of the group knows how to adapt, as usual. Keep some "OH F*K" macros at hand anyway, just in case, hahaha. -

You will encounter at least someone, through the course of playing the game who doesn't like you for your play-style, looks, opinions, etc. This applies to everyone, including those without disabilities, so don't let them get to you.
If you need to lie to stay in a group, this may not be the right group for you. If you really want to hide your condition from others, just say "I don't use VC, for personal reasons." As for staying in a group, just make sure you do tons of research as to not stall the group and make sure you're not the worst in group (applies to everyone). -

Back when I played FFXI, someone thought it would be a good idea to start chatting on voice. So, someone bought a vent server and we all started using it. A few weeks later, we realized that one of our LS members was completely deaf and felt REALLY left out because we were chatting on vent all the time. We felt really bad that he felt left out, and mostly stopped using vent as a result. That's the only experience I've had with a deaf player/friend in an MMO... but, I can understand why FFXI and FFXIV is so very different. FFXIV is very fast-paced, so voice communication is a lot more helpful than it was in FFXI. In FFXI, you could type out a novel between casting spells. FFXIV, not so much. I'm a fast typer but I hate typing in battle because you can and will mess up dodging if you're typing. So, in a way, FFXIV's pace has really pushed us 'toward' voice communication for stuff we need to actually talk about.
But, at the same time, I have known a lot of people who are unable to or uncomfortable talking. I'm perfectly fine with people listening and not talking, because I can still tell them things in real time even if they can't respond as fast. Being entirely deaf is another situation entirely, though. Perhaps it would be possible to use one of those voice-to-text recognition softwares so that we could talk in real time and the deaf person could read in real time? That would also solve the situation of someone feeling way too anxious to even join voicechat in the first place (I have known a few people who feel overwhelmed when joining voice chat, even if they don't talk, and who am I to judge?). I'm not sure how a voice-to-text recognition software would work if someone isn't actually on the voicechat program, but at least that would be a method for deaf/mute people to know what we are saying as we are saying it. -

I tell them I just have nothing to say or pretend I am mute(terrible I know). Heck I'm not even a fan of typing to talk to most people, unless it's fight related or helping someone. I'm one of the deaf ones. Well, hard of hearing, but still it's just as bad anyway. It's the issue of being able to articulate what'sbeing said in the voice chat ( Hint: None at all), so therefore, voice chat has always been useless to me. That being said, it does bother me to see that we're going in the direction that people actually make it a requirement to rely on voice chat in order to get things done. I get the fact that communication is important.
Fortunately, I've yet to be in a situation where I've been barred from events due to my hearing. I also don't join voice chats because if I'm there, then people would expect me to be able to hear and understand what's being said. There were times that I've been in voice chats and people have kept calling out to me and I was none the wiser.
My approach to the situation is to know what's going on and observe the situation. All the fights in FFXIV aren't even randomized at all, and all have patterns. Long as I know the pattern and what's about to happen, I'm good, and that is why I don't even need voice chat anyway.
And no, me actually talking on voice chat doesn't help either. As I said, if I'm there, people expect me to hear them, sooo. Nope.
Absolutely this. Being on that guy's side. I know exactly how he felt. BEfore most of my FC members jumped server, They all chatted it up and hung out on ventrilo/teamspeak, and I couldn't participate so I felt left out. People were getting closer to each other, and I had no idea what was going on. It is actually an extremely discouraging situation, because you can't even form that kind of bond those people do. I've been in several LSes that do this, and believe me, it's extremely discouraging and frustrating at times.Quote:

When I raided in WoW I had a friend who kindly PMed short instructions to me for new fights. I needed that because I am not a native English speaker and though I can obviously talk with people face-to-face, understanding the slurred bumbling of the raid leader and the other guys thru lousy PC speakers was beyond me.
An example: if the raid boss had been Titan Hard Mode, my friend would type:
Remember Landslide from Story Mode? Same deal, avoid it at all costs.
Try to dodge all the other crazy stuff.
DPS the Heart ASAP.
Meanwhile I was pretending to listen to the others' 30 minutes of bumbling explanations, strategies and silly jokes. Nobody in the raid knew the truth - it was a secret between my friend and me. :P -

Myself, I went from having decent hearing to almost completely deaf. (Tumours and Infections; Lost hearing completely on the right, my left is pretty bad as well) over the span of about 5 years. I've been playing MMOs for about twice that long.
With the transition, Its been a mixed bag. A lot of groups now will 'require' voice chat. How I deal with it is simply telling them the truth. They will either be cool with it or not. If they aren't cool with it then just let it go. If you are a good player your server rep will shine past your disability. A good, understanding FC is awesome as well. -

And so we didn't realize we were being really insensitive about him being deaf until he told us why he never came in vent. We all felt absolutely horrible and I think we learned an important lesson that day. What's worse is that I am slightly hard of hearing due to a permanent hole in my eardrum I've had since I was a kid, and I get very frustrated when people get upset at me for not being able to understand them the first time (IRL). I know that having hearing issues is not something people can see or know unless you tell them. So, I should have been more observant regarding my friend who never joined us in vent, and I was kind of disappointed in myself for not realizing it sooner. It's not fair that the burden was on him to say, "Hey, I can't hear you. At all. And I feel left out." But, we stopped using vent as soon as we knew and all was well again... I guess that was the best we could do given the circumstances.Quote:

Well if it helps there is nothing in this game that requires voicecom during raids. It only helps because people get too tunnel visioned and their situational awareness takes a plummet.
For me personally its mostly a distraction. -

But I have a static now which I'm really happy with and they all are aware that I'm deaf and happy with me as a dps but my biggest qualm with some of the players is how if you say you're deaf it's the "you're faking it" that pisses me off more than anything cos why would I wanna lie about a disability?! -

If your team is communicating effectively, then you honestly don't have to worry about much of anything. If that communication requires VoIP then so be it; but I know there are some people who have cleared content without using it and have done just fine. Some people will setup macros to signal things to look for during fights which may make it easier than hearing 4+ people talking simultaneously over VoIP programs.
It's nice but it's not at all necessary or essential.
