Something I will never understand about FFXIV

I just finished a speed run of Brayflox HM in duty roulette and in this particular run I was kinda spazzing out mostly day dreaming and half paying attention to the game and because of this I actually caused the group to wipe on a large pull.

We released and one of the DPS was standing still so I imagined I was about to get a shit ton of abuse because of the wipe but instead he started shouting at the tank because apparently it was his fault?

I notice it a lot in this game that tanks get blamed for everything that goes wrong no matter the situation and I guess I see why people are not interested in playing as a tank now since you have to shoulder all the blame.

I did point out that it was my fault that we wiped and the DPS did apologise to the tank but still people shouldn't immediately attack the tank for everything, it's kind of a weird feeling to be honest since I have had more experience being blamed for everything as a healer in other mmo's I hope with time things will change and people will get less ragey about a single wipe.

Part of it is him just blaming someone other than himself, another part is that there's less transparency when a DD fails, but plenty if it's the tank or healer. So much easier to blame them. Among other things of course.

It happens in all MMOs honestly. Tanks and/or healers are always first to be blamed. But in games where DD has to deal with transparency, it's not as bad.

At first I thought you might be Edi .. but you just are a look alike :(


I am a tank, I only do speedruns in WP, just to avoid this "shaming".

A lot of people know diddly squat on how to play tank, so they think it HAS to be the tanks fault because he HAS to survive anything even with the healer derping out.

When I am on a dps class, and something goes wrong I most of the time know if it was me, the healer or the tank. And in 6/10 cases it was the healer "fault" in 2 either the BRD or BLMs in 1 the whole group derped and than are those specialist tanks that refuse to use provoke and flash, because "thats for noobs " (that is what several tanks actually said)


This isn't only in FFXIV though. It happens in WoW, it also happened in FFXI and what I saw also in AION.
Just the FFXIV cussing is the most extreme, that really says something when WoW is known for their foul mouthed players. Only LoL is worse (from the games I played)

this is one of the things that GW2 did really well. Everyone can heal, so no one gets blamed if someone dies. No default tanks, so no one gets blamed if the squishy classes pull to much hate. Actually I have seen quite a few effective Earth Ele Tanks both in GW2 and GW1. The one thing it didn't do so hot though is pretty much forcing everyone into a DPS role by default.

All told though I prefer this game for various reasons, not least of which is that it is easier on my wallet long term.

Well most times it is the tank's fault, so I guess people are just too used to going after the tank.

If tank pulls more mobs than what the healer can handle it's the tank's fault, if tank is losing hate too often while DPS are hitting the right mobs it is his fault as well.
DPS are at fault if hate is loss while they are not following marks or if adds are not killed fast enough for DPS checks (Haukke HM and Pharos first boss)
Healer... Maybe overhealing?

I liked GW2 mainly for the exploration when I played. I tried a dungeon two or three times and I found it... hectic. Everyone could heal themselves but of course it had a decently long cooldown. I found as a Necro I ended up getting the enemies after me 90% of the time and I didn't know how to make it attack someone else. I remember getting low health, healing myself, then just running around trying not to die cause I had 3-5 enemies after me with low health and my heal on cooldown. The one time I found that worked well is when we fought some big troll thingy before the boss, and I just kept kiting it around without getting hit.

But on topic, surprisingly I haven't seen tanks blamed too often except when it actually was their fault, losing aggro on a bunch of enemies from not using Flash or Overpower, not positioning things right, etc. Sometimes the wipe is my fault as a healer, but rarely. I use my cooldowns properly and I know how to heal when there's a lot of damage coming in, but sometimes you just can't keep the tank up no matter how fast you press that button. Honestly, most of the time I think wipes are caused by DPS. Either not knowing their rotation and not doing enough damage, not killing things in the right order, attacking things that shouldn't be attacked, stunning when you shouldn't be, etc etc. In my attempts of Levi Ex I've been the cause of about 2 wipes falling off the ledge, where DPS have been getting hit by every single dash and falling off the ledge 9 times out of 10 (this was in a group where we had killed him 5 times already together and the same couple people kept getting hit/dying to everything).

Sorry to say but if the team wipe (and it's OK in games) it's the TEAM's fault.

On the left side of your party bar, there is a little bar that goes white and show A (the one with most aggro) then 2, 3, 4..

It's there for Tanks, Healers and DPS to check.

If the bar is filled up from any other than a Tank, DPS can switch target, AoE can stop for a bit, Healing can be managed until obvious the tank will die..

All in all, you wipe: you all sucked bad. Learn to accept it, it's not the end of the game, nor the world, just laugh about it, and yes, like arcades that you put quarters in it:you're dead - TRY AGAIN!

If you put the fun factor first, SR (which I hate) or not, you will get it done.

Oh perhaps with 5 more mins than usual this time around, losing another run (QQ)

Taking a game too seriously (are you getting 10000$ from that run if you are number one on your server? I doubt it) is what kills us.

For me, it's not so much who's to blame as why bother blaming at all? Nine times out of ten, its a combination of things that lead to a wipe... Ya know, unless someone's gone afk to pick their nose during heart phase. When I heal and I die before the tank, maybe I threw down heals a little too hard and the tank was having a hard time keeping aggro. When I am dps, maybe my output isn't quite high enough to clear the field before the tank runs out of cooldowns to fall back on. If people stop blaming one another and just try to meet halfway cooperatively, most (if not all) content would be less stressful and more efficiently cleared. We have enough obstacles, why treat your party members like obstacles too?

Forgot how it all started because the guideline for it was introduced a long time ago that I don't remember it anymore. Then again the age of patience has become nearly extinct.

The last time I joined a brayflox hard party as a tank I had a really bad experience with the healer chastising me for not playing the way they like, even though we were surviving perfectly fine, this person had a problem with everything I did, they were so particular about the exact positions I should stand even though it makes no difference, and when I told them they were being pushy and making it unfun, they stopped healing me and allowed me to die. I left and blocked that person, it's the only time I've walked out on a run like that, and it left a bad taste in my mouth. When playing with people you've never met, you have to be open-minded and adjust to their play style. That person was treating me like their slave, barking orders at me even though I have my own way to successfully complete the duty that differs slightly from theirs.

As a healer I tend to offer most blame on myself for wipes,(even though I keep getting told I'm an awesome healer) as I just feel like there had to be something I could have done better. Better timing on lustrates, better timing in eos cooldowns, something. Which usually gets shot down by tanks or Dps who jump out and say "Na it was our fault for this reason" but never had anyone snap at other people for things yet really. So maybe I'm just lucky

Well I just hope that people can relax a little on tanks and try to put themselves in their positions because if it keeps going like this we will just get less and less tanks in queues.

when the healer isn't on the ball, the tank dies and everyone sees it.

when the tank isn't on the ball, hate goes crazy and kills people and everyone sees it

when the dps isn't on the ball, killing things takes too long which can cause the tank or healer to mess up and it can look like someone else's fault.

the tanks get the most blame because their screw ups are the most visible, may also be why there are so few of em, from a gameplay perspective it isn't that hard but social pressure to preform or be bullied and shunned by everyone is pretty intense
